Auburn, WA doctor. (Some reviews are for another David Schumer, MD)…read moreGreat interaction with him and his staff. His dog is part of the staff and very friendly. He took the time to get to know me as a new patient and discussed my concerns without hurrying to the next patient. He is friendly and caring while still being a bit coarse in his opinions. He will let you know his views honestly, occasionally with a few swear words for punctuation, but also with laughter and concern. I prefer the honesty and don't care about the coarse verbiage. Very happy with him as my guiding doctor!

My sister was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Aphasia, a subtype of Frontotemporal Dementia,…read moreapproximately seven years ago. During the time when she was first diagnosed and still fully able to speak for herself, she informed the family that her wish was to stay at home until the end of her life. David Schumer was her doctor and while she was still ambulatory and had the ability to toilet independently, he recommended her for Hospice care on 2 occasions when she was clearly ineligible for such care. Both times she was disqualified for the service by Medicare. No doctor that understands the criteria for Hospice care would have repeatedly made such a senseless decision twice. One can only guess why, but it appeared he was trying to give the impression he cared for my sister's wellbeing, even though he knew she would never meet the criteria for Hospice care. Hence, giving the family false expectations. Due to the unique nature of her disease and unlike more common forms of dementia, my sister remained aware of her surrounding and the people she loved. However, as her disease progressed, providing quality care became more and more difficult. To avoid the cost of in-home full-time care and fulfill my sister's wish to die at home, Schumer plotted with her husband to place my sister in a low-quality care home, even though the money was available. This decision immediately sped her decline, destroyed her quality of life and separated her from her loved ones for long periods of time. Moreover, Schumer became more and more dismissive when family members expressed concerns for her care. Finally, when it became apparent she did qualify for hospice care, Schumer did nothing other than increase the level of her sedation. My sister died without ever experiencing the benefits of Hospice care and was effectively abandoned by her "doctor" during her greatest time of need. Schumer may have been in the business for 40+ years, but his decisions to care for my sister at the end of life were deplorable. For more proof of Schumer's unethical behavior, please see the State of Washington, Department of Health Case #M2022-991 (9/12/2024) where legal action was taken against him regarding another patient, and the medical review board determined he had behaved unethically. I would never trust this man!

They went over and above the call of duty to help me. I left without the blood test and was backing out of my parking place when they both came to find me. The doctor's office had responded and they gave me the blood test. We were friends by the time I left. Because they did their jobs so well, everything was easier. This is a good lab.

We are still stuck with the bill even though THEY CAUSED HIS SYMPTOMS & COULD HAVE KILLED HIM!! The lab on the main floor did not process my husbands labwork correctly, resulting in his cardiologist changing his medications. 36 hours later he was admitted to St Joes ER (also a Franciscan facility) with heart attack symptoms (BP ~210/107, tingling arm, nausea, etc). According to the ER Dr, his admittance into the hospital was a direct result of of the medication changes made by his cardiologist, based on the incorrect lab results. We followed back up with the cardiologist at this location. He admitted his own family had stopped using the lab there, as they were unhappy with results from there as well... Nonetheless, we cautiously had his blood work done a second time, again resulting in incorrect numbers. We then got a 2nd, 3rd & 4th blood draw at 3 other labs not Franciscan labs. It was confirmed his results from that lab were incorrect. We contacted a patient advocate with Franciscan. Concerned that if this lab processed one patients labs incorrectly twice, it was easy to assume it was happening to others. After 4 months of internal investigation, they admitted the same person processed both samples, retraining was done, but we were still liable for the $5000 bill at the ER ($2000 insurance, $3000 out of pocket, $21000 contractually written off). Even though the Drs decisions, based on INCORRECTLY PROCESSED blood samples, almost KILLED him; we are still responsible for the bill to save his life. A bill from the exact same corporation.
