Some of 'em are runnin flowmasters dual thrush or something maybe rolling coal with straight stacks (but that would be kinda heavy, not very aerodynamic - or simply dynamic because the aero is implied - friendly and counterintuitive to the generally accepted principals of lift but since this is my review and it's in Auburn I'm including it for just the possibilities which if one thinks about it are really overwhelming. Helicopters fly here but they don't use the runway so remember to look both ways up and down as they sorta just plop vs extended and graceful show off floating just above the surly bonds. Of Auburn. But first the helicopters do their jump-float-plop thing over the greens because poor people are always doing, you know, nasty poor people things like living. Plus they don't complain like Mrs. Betty Bowers at Winchester Country Club Estates Phase II so don't make her illegal cleaning chick late with any of your ICE raids. It's the annual Junior League Baptists with Bullets fundraiser and her patio furniture better be dusted proper. Got it at Costco but the driver sullied it so chop chop hella cop don't spoil it. All in all a cool airport. Planes land there. Man, what next...people in tubes zipping around like your drivers license and two non-functional pens at the bank drive thru?? What a world. Is there one beyond Auburn? Best not find out it could be an abyss. With poor people.

The airport is smallish compared to the huge hubs we usually fly in and out of, making it real easy to get around. We flew into and are flying out of Terminal A on American. Super easy check-in, Touchless TSA and short walk to any of the 17 gates in Terminal A. Our flight is waiting on incoming equipment, so we're seated in the center of the terminal near the food court is super comfy seats, with AC power. WiFi was easy to connect to with no funky logon process. It's clean here, plenty of urinal stalls in the Men's room. Multiple places to fill water bottles. Other than "it's an airport", there's a lot to be appreciative for her at SMF during my two recent visits.

The wife and I flew up to visit some friends for the day and ended up staying overnight due to…read moreweather and a mechanical issue with the plane. There wasn't a repair station on the field that was open, but I found a few local airport guys that just "happen" to be hanging out in the small terminal building just to the north west of the transient parking area. After a few questions regarding any service on the field, they began to inquire as to what was going on with my plane. I mentioned that it was running rough, and thought it might be a mag or possibly a fouled plug. After a small discussion as to what they thought it could be, I thanked them for their verbal assistance and proceeded back to my plane where our friends were waiting. Unbeknownst to me, these guys followed me out to the plane and began to assist me with removing the cowling to try and figure out what the issue was. Shortly after the cowling was removed, a truck showed up with enough tools in the back for an annual inspection. We came to the conclusion that we had a bad plug and a minor fuel issue with the carburetor. After about an hour and a loaner plug, we were back in business ready to head for Livermore. Due to the weather, we weren't able to leave that evening, or the next day, but once the weather did clear, my son and I were able to depart, and we had a successful flight back to Livermore. I would like to give a huge shout out to these guys that came out to help, and I sincerely appreciate their time, assistance, and comic relief!! I think there were at least two or three guys named Dave and Larry LOL. You guys are awesome!!

Myself along with 9 other pilots and their families, all from various locations throughout…read moreCalifornia landed at Westover-Amador Airport (KJAQ) this past Sunday (10-27-13) for a Fly-In Pizza Lunch. Landing was a bit tricky since the the common use runway (19) has a 18 degree uphill slope. Once on the ground, I found the parking had plenty of tie down chains for aircraft. The grounds, taxiway and runway also seemed to be very well maintained and manicured. Thank you Dave Sheppard for that. The airport doesn't have a FBO per-say but, there is an indoor business center that host a flight school, clean restrooms, a sitting area and a decent soda machine. Fuel prices on Sunday were $5.30 a gallon for 100LL which was great. There's also a nice grass area with three large picnic tables just outside the business centers doors which can easily accommodate 30 persons. If your ever in the mood for some really good pizza. I recommend flying into Westover and ordering from a place called Pizza Plus which is located about two miles away in Sutter Creek (http://www.yelp.com/biz/pizza-plus-sutter-creek). They will deliver to the airport at no extra charge and the pizza is amazingly good. Thanks Noel (Pizza Plus Manager) for taking the time to accommodate our group. If you plan on visiting the airport and having pizza for lunch at Pizza Plus, I'd suggest (if you have a bluetooth headset) calling in your order about 20 NM before you land. Good pizza takes a minute but, great pizza, especially if it's delivered takes forever.

Yesterday was my first time flying into Nut Tree (KVCB) Airprot but, now that I know what to expect…read moreonce on the ground I plan on making Nut Tree a routine destination. More on that in a moment. Nut Tree is an uncontrolled airport with one just over 4000 foot runway. It's well maintained and if flying in or out after hours, the PCL is above average. Fuel. Is also reasonable at $4.72 per gallon and they do maintain a pilots lounge area to take a break (hours unknown). After landing and parking at one of the many spots with chain tie downs, it's a short walk via the field behind the hangers to local eateries or the Vacaville Outlets. A few mentionable items: Runway 2 is the calm wind runway with a left traffic pattern. If your flying to or from the South and progressing through Travis's Airspace, be sure you establish two way radio comms with Travis Approach. Remember, Travis still is an active AFB. The gate leaving the airport to the shopping area has a code but, that gate combo lock is a bit tricky. Be sure you play code and lock before leaving the gate so you don't lock yourself out.
