I can't wait to return to this charming wine bar in Nice! It's clear that the owner, Jérémy, is…read morevery passionate about wine. He was so engaging and recommended a variety of wines to try from local Provence rosés to Beaujolais reds to sparkling from Champagne, and we loved them all. Some highlights included Tribaut-Schloesser champagne and Clos de la Roilette fleurie. The space is warm, inviting, and intimate; and we ended up staying late into the night. When I got back to the United States, I had a difficult time finding one of the wines I enjoyed at La Petite Loge. When I emailed Jérémy to see if I could purchase from him, he was kind enough to find the bottle I was looking for at a retailer in the U.S. and recommend I purchase there. All in all, I couldn't have asked for a better or more personal experience at La Petite Loge. When you leave, you will have had some incredible wines, and you'll feel like family.

Aperitiv is a new kind of food business for Nice. It is the…read morecoolest little shop carrying items for the perfect picnic, soiree, gourmet snack, drinks with friends, etc events. I stumbled upon Aperitiv while walking through the neighborhood after being in the old Port of Nice. When I walked in, I was excited. There were shelves and shelves of wine, spirits. Barrels of different kinds of olives which you could scoop up and self serve or pick up already prepared packages. There was a display case with different types of cheese and charcuterie. There were eating accessories that you might need like plates, napkins, bottle opener. I chatted with the man behind the counter and I found out he was the co-owner of the shop (and a former management consultant who had worked in Paris but had returned after several years to his home region of Nice). He and a management consultant colleague had decided to open this venture and had only been in business for a short time. They had taken over a year to choose all the items they wanted to stock in the shop. What a delight. I asked him if he had a sweet wine in a small bottle. Unfortunately, he only had sweet wines in regular sized bottles which are a little too much for me to drink. After a bit of nosing around though, he recalled that he had an opened bottle of ice wine available for sampling. He whipped out a small glass and gave me a taste for free. It was delicious!!! I ended up buying some lovely goat cheese and some delicious charcuterie which he sliced on the machine and packaged himself. Really hands on service here. Also to note: his shop supplies or advises on the wine for the little restaurant opposite the entrance of the store across the street. So if you want to try some wine that they sell, you just have to pop over to the restaurant and check out the selection there. What a great find: a food entrepreneur who wants to evolve the food scene in Nice. At the same time I also support the traditional way of going to a particular shop focused on particular products (say all cheese, all bread, whatever). I think both can co-exist happily. However people can deliver food to consumers to make it less intimidating and more available, I totally like that. And you'll love Apertiiv once you experience it yourself.

I was introduced to Specialites Nicoises during a walking food tour that I took to Nice (so glad I…read moredid it, otherwise would be really hard to narrow down where all the best local specialities are). It was fun to watch how socca is made and, as someone who has never tried it, I really liked it (not something I would crave immediately again but it's a good option for gluten free street food). Seems like there is always a line outside (which is an indicator for delicious and cheap food). It's more of a to go place so make sure it's packaged well as socca is pretty greasy and can create a huge mess. Overall, I would definitely go there again if I am in Nice.

This spot is in the old town part of…read moreNice, and it had a line of folks eagerly waiting their chance to order from among the various options, which included their traditional local classic socca, which is what our guide brought us there to try, and what appeared to be a selection of flatbreads, and thick crust pizzas. We got a chance to see how they make their socca, which is apparently just the same flour used for couscous, mixed with water, then placed an big, round, metal baking dish lined with olive oil, and then oven roasted for 3-5 minutes. Once done, it's just lightly seasoned with pepper - our guide said no other spice, otherwise it's not authentic in terms of local custom. I wasn't the biggest fan of the socca, though it wasn't bad, and their pizzas on offer all looked amazing - there's a reason they had the long line that they had. Next time in old town Nice, I'd give them a try!
