This store reminds me of the numerous record stores in Philadelphia. The walls and floors are packed with all kinds of records. It amazes me that they can even keep track of their inventory. I think that while this place deserves recognition, it also has a few overly priced records. It's easy to kill a few hours here just trying out and listening to random records. You may find something you like! They range from having everything as strange as Japanese country music to modern alternative bands. The selection of this store surpasses any record store that I've been to in the 'burgh so far. read more

Great selection, organized in a way that's easy to find what you're looking for, and very friendly staff. Definitely my favorite record store that I've gone to so far! I went with a few record ideas in mind, and started looking through the used records. I was surprised by how many things I was able to find that weren't on my list, but were still of interest to me. I heard the staff helping people order records, turntables, etc, so even if they don't have it, they can help you get it. Today I made my first trip to The Attic. It's been on my to-do list after having bought a new turntable last month and diving into a vinyl addiction that I haven't felt since my youth. Jerry's Records was first on my list, and The Attic was second. It took me a little longer to make my way over to it, but the experience was good. That said, I like Jerry's more. However, The Attic has plenty to plow through. They have new vinyl release, whereas Jerry's does not, but I mainly go vinyl shopping for used copies, anyway, so this isn't as big a plus for me as it might be for other shoppers. They also have CDs and take credit cards for payment as stated in other reviews here, whereas Jerry's is cash only and has a very, very minimal CD section, if that (I saw a small pile the last time I was there). Again, no biggie for me, as I go to buy vinyl and Jerry's does have an ATM on site. As for the browsing itself, I found The Attic to be a bit too cramped to my liking. The albums are in stacks, and while they're clearly labeled by artist, browsing can be a bit of a chore in the narrow aisles when only one person is in one looking around. Put two or three people in an aisle, and it's a waiting game. You can go look through other aisles while you wait but today there were people all over the place, so it was rather hard to navigate. I did get some great help from an employee when I was looking for some Zapp and Roger LPs. He knew exactly where they were. I had been close to finding them myself, but the Zapp records were way in a back corner on a bottom shelf and weren't the easiest things to find. So the guy who helped me today knew his way around quite well and I picked up a couple albums when he led me to the ones I was wanting to browse. The prices vary a bit more than Jerry's. There were all sorts of things that were over the five dollar range that would have been three or four at Jerry's. Of course, there are often multiple copies of the same album, and each is priced in according to its condition. I just felt like it was less of a cool bargain hunt and was reminded more of being a teenager and browsing through bins at my local used record store and seeing average prices of seven to ten bucks. However, when I went up to pay I clearly got a couple albums free as I had well over 30 dollars worth of LPs. My total came to 25 bucks and change, so I will say that was a nice surprise. The condition of the albums were very good as well, so I definitely got what I paid for, and then some. I'm not quite sure if I'll be back to The Attic any time soon. As I said, I like the overall feel of thumbing through zillions of records with ease at Jerry's and having the whole thing feel like a wacky treasure hunt of sorts. The Attic felt more like being squeezed into someone's basement and looking through their massive collection with minimal comfort. They definitely have plenty to look through here, but I just wish it was a bit easier to browse and get around the place. read more

Pittsburgh is fortunate to have so many great record shops, both within and outside of the city. Each of these shops has its pros and cons for sure, but from my experiences buying vinyl, there is one that stands out above the rest: Attic Records in Millvale. Walk in the front door of the shop located on Grant Ave (easy to find thanks to the beautiful musical murals that grace the storefront) and you will most likely be greeted by one of the many friendly individuals who work the store. They'll say hello, tell you to let them know if you need help, and then they'll leave you the hell alone. The Attic is not one of these places where you will be pestered by salesmen during your visit; they understand that record buying takes time and is a special experience--dare I say, a spiritual experience. They are friendly and there to help, but they aren't going to follow you around the store. From here you will find that while the Attic doesn't boast the unreal stock numbers of another Pittsburgh record shop, you'll still find just what you need. The Attic seems to stress quality over quantity, and because they sell new in addition to used records, they always have on hand the classics (The Beatles, the Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, etc.) that other stores seem to be perpetually out of. If you're looking for something a bit more off the beaten path from the classic rock scene, the Attic most likely has it--folk, country, hip hop, jazz (the Attic as the best selection of Miles Davis records (new and used) that I've seen anywhere), soundtracks, Broadway cast recordings, international, and so much more. My brother, who is a huge metal fan, says that the Attic is the only place in Pittsburgh he can find everything he wants. Again...quality over quantity. Speaking of quality, I've never purchased a used record from the Attic that was unplayable. A scratch here, a skip there, sure. You can be sure that if you're buying something from the Attic, it won't be an unplayable disc, only useful for playing an impromptu game of frisbee golf. In addition to having a plethora of great records on hand, the Attic also has a massive compact disc collection to go through. I know, for many of the vinyl purists out there talking about any kind of digital music is demon speak, but some of my favorite music isn't on vinyl; besides, there are those of us out there who collect both. The Attic's CD collection boasts a lot of hard to find indie pop/rock/punk if you're into that sort of thing, plus limited edition releases of some of the classics. As far as price goes, I find the Attic to be more than reasonable. Vinyl is expensive, but you can usually find new records for the same price or a bit cheaper than online or at a chain vendor. I've also found some great deals of some classic records for between $10 and $15 at the Attic, and I feel like those prices are lower than I'd see at other places. The only issue I have found with the Attic is the physical size of its store. There are a lot of records packed into a very small space, and it can be cramped and claustrophobic in places. I've never been there on the weekend myself, but I can imagine that when it gets crowded the small size could adversely affect the shopping experience. If I'm going through the Queen shelf and you're looking for Rage Against the Machine, there's a good chance we'll be bumping into each other. But that's okay--I may be stereotyping, but people who buy vinyl are typically pretty nice, so there most likely won't be any issues. Besides, its small space is part of the charm of a locally owned neighborhood business that has been around for a million years. If you're looking to buy records (and CDs) in the PIttsburgh area, you have lots of outstanding options, and if you're like me, you'll find yourself returning to the Attic again and again and again. In a city with great record shops, they are the greatest. read more

I've been visiting the Attic off and on for years, although with recent management (and price) changes at Jerry's, I find myself here with increasing frequency. Prices are fair, and the selection is well curated; you'll likely have to do some digging, but that's part of the fun. Many times, I've come to the Attic on a mission of a particular LP or 45 - almost every time, they have it. I'm also consistently impressed with their selection of 12" singles and imports. The staff is great - knowledgeable, welcoming, and genuinely appreciate the customers. Highly recommend this place for music lovers. read more

When you're looking for vintage classics no matter what genre, they've got it or they'll certainly try to find it. Fred and his staff are very helpful and always remember their regulars! Jerry's may get all the press in Pittsburgh, but The Attic is an equally impressive store. Tight, cramped and filled with gems; I love this store! More LPs and 45s than you'll have time to look at. I easily spend 4 hours here and wish I had more time. My only complaint is there are many unpriced 45s and the pricing system can be a throw of the dice. Sometimes they eyeball the pile, other times they'll look them up on eBay. If I knew what the total would be ahead of time, I'd likely spend more money and time here. read more

Attic records. Is there enough that can be seriously said about this little gem? Attic is the best place to go to find the gamut of records (and pretty much all other formats) for the music lover and collector. This place along with Jerry's in Squirrel Hill are the only record stores you need to know about. In comparison to Jerry's Attic doesn't have the shear volume of used records, but they do have new stuff (current artists pressing vinyl). Don't worry, though, their used selection is huge still. Attic keeps a nice stock of current music that you can tumb through, and stack and stacks of new and used mixed in their back room. They will also gladly order anything for you. This point may be moot with the presence of the internet, but then again there is something to be said for going into a place, picking up the vinyl, and holding it before you buy it. In addition to all the records they will buy and sell tapes, DVDs and other formats. I only go there for the vinyl, but hey- keeps them busy. Other pluses: 1. They accept Credit Cards 2. The meters in Millvale still take dimes. That alone is worth going there... just to get rid of your dimes. 3. The staff knows their stuff and you can sometimes talk them into stocking different stuff. 4. They don't jerk your chain and will make you deals. Do it. Go to Attic. You won't be sorry. Record store prices, flea market quality. I was impressed with the selection and made a substantial purchase. Later I found that about half of the records I bought had significant damage. I understand this is a risk when buying used and I will be sure to patronize establishments with better quality control in the future. read more

Hands down the coolest record store I've ever been to. We have some interesting places here in SoCal but nothing out here can compare to the experience of shopping at Attic Records. If this were up the street from my house I'd be wasting countless hours (instead of actually listening to music) digging through aisles of stuff waiting to be discovered. I live near Baltimore (I'm a Pittsburgh native) and there are some great record stores here, but The Attic is just wonderful and it is usually one of the highlights of my trips back home. Cool spot for used records. They get in a whole slew of new releases too. And record store day there is the place to be. They move volume! Best collection of obscure yet desirable 7"s in town. Friendly guys too. Sometimes stinks like an old man's social club with cigg smoke. Which doesn't bother me necessarily but have heard people whine. Prices are on par. Oh, I would be so much richer were it not for my discovery of Attic Records. This guy has *RARE* stuff, for ridiculously low prices. I know from experience that record stores love to rip you off when it comes to Beatles albums... this store is a major exception. I can't believe the stuff I've walked out of here with for under $10. If you're anywhere from a casual music fan to a hardcore collector, you *need* to check this place out.
