Jerry's Records made me fall in love with my record player. I couldn't have asked for a better store to help me build my collection. I can always find something I'm interested in for $10 or less. Jerry's is a third place to me. It's a must visit every time I'm back in Pittsburgh! Jerry's is estimated to have over 500,000 records. Here's what I've learned from my two years in Pittsburgh to help sort through the collection: 1. Best sellers are located upfront. Normally there's a few of each artist: The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Rush, Aerosmith, and many more. Price range between $20-60 2. For people starting out, Jerry's has a lot of well known albums and artists for $7-8 a record. Common finds: Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Santana, REO Speedwagon, Jefferson Starship/Jefferson Airplane, Elton John, STYX, and Chicago. 3. Huge Christmas selection in the $3-20 range. They likely have what you're looking for. My boyfriend's mom was looking for Christmas with Mitch for many years. She found 8 copies at Jerry's Records in less than 15 minutes. 4. There's a large Broadway and musical soundtrack section tucked in the corner down the first hallway on the right. Normally they are about $5-15. 5. Before checking out, look at the record and sleeve for damages. From experience, most priced above $7 play really well. They may have a few crackles, but a quick wash takes most of that away. I've been spending money in Jerry's Records since January, 1995. I've spent thousands of dollars there. Recently, I offered them 19 new sealed CDs of mine for $60 trade value, slightly over $3 apiece. They rejected them, they don't buy locally produced work. They don't support local musicians. I've lived in Pittsburgh since 1996 but I lived in Baltimore & in rural Canada & spent significant time in Buffalo, Berlin (Germany), Scotland, & in Adelaide & Melbourne (Australia). The 19 CDs had work of mine recorded in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Melbourne, Montréal, Windsor, Berlin, on the Ohio River, Munich (at the Marstall Theater, the adjunct to the opera house), Middletown (CT), with Anthony Braxton at the Marsh Room of the National Aviary, Olympia (WA), Barcelona, rural Canada, Toronto, & LA - but I'm local &, apparently, that means shitty & not worth supporting. Keep that in mind Donna Amato - you're a great pianist but.. you're local. People in Baltimore had a similar attitude toward local musicians. Billie Holiday & Chick Webb moved from there to NYC to 'make it'. I'm 72, I've been playing music since I was 6. I think I've paid my dues. I'm a pioneering sound artist. I currently have at least 262 releases: 8 vinyl records, at least 29 CDs (commercially produced, NOT CR-Rs), & many more on cassette & as online files. I figure $60 trade value for 19 new CDs was a pretty good deal for Jerry's. That barely covers my cost. If I got 10 recordings from Jerry's for $6 a piece in trade I doubt that they would have cost the store more than $20. If they sold my new CDs for $5 apiece that would be $95, $75 profit. The Jerry's employee who rejected my CDs said that I'd be back & I agreed - but after I left I thought: Why? Maybe it's better to not give them my money for awhile. My first time visiting Jerry's records, and was really pleased with the selection. I can literally spend hours browsing for vinyl. I really like how the records are organized with labels of the band or artist, which is helpful instead of flipping through A-to-Z in a certain genre. The store is very well organized. The street parking wasn't that bad like I anticipated. We look forward to returning. read more

I've been collecting records since 1981 on both coasts and internationally, and I can say without a doubt that Jerry's is the best record store I've ever visited. It has an amazing selection. This is a great spot to go and browse for records. Go with an open mind because some of the more popular albums are not easy to find nowadays. Also go with a bit of time on your hands. It's enjoyable to just browse the selection and take your time sifting through. They have a huge selection of all genres of music. At one point, I had Marry Poppins, Bing Crosby Christmas, a few jazz and big band artists, and Chicago in my arms. I settled on Jimmy Dorsey, Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, and Chicago. It's cash only. If you're unprepared like I was, there is an atm right as you get to the top of the stairs. The fee to get cash is reasonable as well. Stopped in with my 14 year old as he's developed an interest in vinyl...I have a collection of vintage LP's. Hadn't been to Jerry's in quite a while, but they have a terrific stock of classic 33's and 45's of most any genre you could think of, including old radio shows. (Sadly, no Colin Hay in stock...lol) Reasonable prices too! I found a couple things, as did the lad...just be aware that they're a cash shop (but they do have an ATM in case you need it). First of all I am a music addict and when I stepped into this store, my expression was "sweet Mother Mary! What have they done!!" I felt like 6 year old at a candy store and wanted to buy every candy! I have NEVER seen such a collection under 1 roof. The crews were a walking database. I have asked for some oddball artists from various genre and felt they wont know, but to my surprise, not only they knew but also pointed me to the specific row to find that LP. I was blown away! Jerry's is one of the best record stores I've seen in years. There's so much stock that it would take you a month to touch every record. The prices are lower than they could be, & the staff are friendly. There's also a small CD section apart from the rest of the store. My only complaint is that you have to pay for the CDs separately so if you buy both vinyl & CDs you don't benefit as much when they knock a few dollars off your total (like all the best shops will do). It's a must-see for vinyl enthusiasts--but bring cash because they don't accept credit cards. There's an ATM machine on premises that has a high $2.50 fee & a low $200 maximum withdrawal. read more

Hands down my favorite record store in the entire US. Massive collection, truly in the upper echelon along with stores like Amoeba in LA, Rasputin in Berkeley, and Bananas in St Petersburg. Prices are great, and the owners often knock off bucks when buying in bulk (something easy to do). Vinyl is generally in great shape. All genres, including obscure ones and music from countries around the world. Pretty much the best collection of classical I have seen. You generally won't find the rare or highly sought here, like original blue notes, etc, but there is so much, ya better go with a list, because one's mind tends to go blank upon walking into the store... it is that overwhelming. read more

Jerry's is one of the best record stores in the country and my personal favorite, beating out California's Amoeba Records. It is easy to spend hours browsing Jerry's voluminous and well organized aisles of used vinyl. Their prices are also very affordable, making it easy to build up a back catalog of a particular artist or genre. Their sweet spot is a huge volume of titles in the $5-$10 range that would sell for more elsewhere. WHAT JERRY'S IS DOING IS MAKING THE VINYL HOBBY ACCESSIBLE TO THE MASSES! That is something many otherwise great record stores fail to do. You also will not encounter any of the stereotypical cooler-than-thou attitude from their staff. That unfortunately is all too common in the business. Their staff is super friendly and knowledgeable-all happy to help you hunt down that esoteric 45 or elusive soundtrack. When I bought too many records to carry home while visiting from out of town, the owner Chris brought out some boxes for shipping, packed my haul perfectly, taped them up and directed me to the post office a block away. Great way to spend a cold, rainy weekend afternoon. I went alone and had a blast browsing for a couple hours. Went home with some great finds, all reasonably priced. (Bring cash!) The amount of records they have is almost overwhelming, in the best way. I feel like the strategy here is go in with an open mind and see what you find vs. looking for something verify specific. There's something for absolutely everybody. I didn't see any modern vinyl (like today's artists, Urban Outfitters type stuff) which is fine but some people might expect to find that here. read more

MY GOD. This place is BONKERS. There are records upon records up records. As a hardcore record collector as of the past 10 years or so, I nearly had a heart attack when I stepped foot inside. I'm a big fan of 45s and they have multiple, ceiling-high aisle shelves of ALL 45s catering to just that. These records range about $3-$5 but be sure to check out the boxes in the smaller back room for rarer finds for about $7-$10. A couple things to remember: 1) it's cash only but there is an ATM on-site. Best to bring cash before you come anyways 2) the downstairs garage has a lot of $1 finds! 3) make a list of things of your holy grail of records: I was able to find about 90% of my record wishlist (which had some SUPER rare stuff) at Jerry's 4) they're more than a record store- they do repairs next door, have tons of accessories (needles, record storage boxes, record cleaning fluid, etc.) 5) make time to dig- because there is plenty to dig through! There were a couple of really awesome employees who were posted up in the 45s section who were really nice and helpful. Give 'em a genre or band you like and they'll know just the 45 to recommend. The dudes who rang me up were also super nice and quick at getting me through the door. Overall? Jerry's Records wins the title of my Favorite Record Store of all time. I will be making a pilgrimage to PGH just for Jerry's in the very near future. read more

Check out the pics of you don't believe me. Incredible selection of vinyl with the only known major missing music (because it moves so fast when it comes in) as indie rock and progressive rock. Good luck finding that RUsh bootleg or Arcade Fire 'love at wherever. However, many diamonds in the rough here for all types of music and that classified in a clever, I think sometimes humorous manner. The hunt is half the charm, go nuts! They also have probably the largest volume of jazz music I'm going to say in the world because why not, again look a the pics. It's enormous. A treasure trove, a goldmine, frankly the biggest motherload of quality classic vinyl LPs I've *ever* seen! Imagine 13,000+ sqare feet of jazz, blues, soul, funk, r'n'b, rock, folk, documentaries, comedy, instructionals, soundtracks, etc. You can't find that rare blues/soul/jazz record on ebay or anywhere else. Jerry prolly has it!! And the kicker is that the average price for records here is $3-$4!! Yep, you heard right!! Great record store in Squirrel Hill but make sure you have got a few hours to browse the records... Prices came up a bit after Jerry sold the place to Chris, the new owner but I guess that is to be expected. A lot of records from every genre you can think of including corny old comedy records, holiday music and a whole room of jazz records... and did I say 2 different areas where you can find Rick James records ? I really wish Chris would get a point of sale system to accept debit cards and credit cards... I personally am much more likely to spend more if I had that option. I realize it cost him a bit of money and there is more bookkeeping and accounting to deal with but the convenience would really be nice in the year 2019 ! read more

Stopped in today (1/4 in case the owners want to check who was working) to look at records and check out the Galaxie electronics store that's connected to Jerry's. As I was about to open the door to Galaxie, I could hear someone loudly speaking about "f*cking Obama" and how "that f*cking n*gger" was never born in the US so he should have been removed from office. Some seriously disgusting racist hate speech. After listening for about 30 seconds to make sure I was hearing what i thought I'd heard, I opened the door and discovered a bearded and ponytailed guy in his late 30s/early 40s wearing a black hoodie. He looked at me and hightailed it out of there. No one else was in the store besides the Galaxie employees and from how close he was it was clear that his voice was the one I heard saying all those disgustingly racist things. I looked around Galaxie a bit despite being genuinely disturbed by the hate speech I had just heard. Once I was done I walked into Jerry's and saw that very same ponytailed and bearded guy -- except this time he was WORKING BEHIND THE COUNTER. Considering you're in a progressive neighborhood that's teeming with people of all color and religions, maybe don't have staff that are so openly and unashamedly racist in their place of work? I absolutely loved this store before and have spent hundreds of dollars there building my collection but I will never go jack as long as that sad, racist goon is employed there. Or perhaps his employers share his nauseating views? I genuinely don't know at this point. ============ Updating my review based on the owner's response below and a phone converter just had where i reached out to thank him for his response and swift actions. Definitely the best record store I've ever been too. I got some of my all time favorites, Thick as a brick, The Chicago Transit Authority, A Well Tempered Synthesizer, and Tapestry, all for less than 10 dollars a piece. And in the case of the Chicago and Jethro Tull albums they were both first editions and near mint. Hell if it wasn't for the aged exterior of the cover I would've thought the Chicago was new. Not to mention there huge selection and kind staff able to help you find anything you need. read more

So I was just chilling in the neighborhood and I saw this sign so of course being a Music addict I had to go in. The staff was super friendly and laid-back they even me bring my little puppy Brutus in. I was amazed at how many records they have and how big it was and how very well organized it was I really like that a lot. There was quite the selection of all genres in and quite a variety of each genre I ended up just buying about 4 or 5 albums because I didn't want to spend all my money LOL but I could've gone broke in there. I'll always miss Jerry behind the counter. I still looked for him as I entered. Old habits die hard. Gone are the massive, towering stacks of 7" Singles (the collection was sold before Jerry left). Now about 40 white cardboard 45RPM boxes remain. 45s are priced between $3-$5 with a box of betters behind the front counter. I left with a handful of great soul/garage/funk 45s just like old times! We were in from out of town and saw this on a list of best record stores in the US, and it sure did not disappoint. Found one record I've been looking for for years, and wouldn't you know, they had 2 copies of it! Left the second copy for someone else to eventually find though! Sweet lord, what a record store. I recently bought a turntable after a long time of not owning one. Shortly afterwards, I started doing research for best record stores in the 'Burgh, starting with the reviews right here on Yelp. Jerry's came up first. The reviews for Jerry's sounded like my kinda place. My only worry was that it's located in Squirrel Hill and I was fearing some kind of godawful traffic jam heading up 376 over the weekend, but luckily it wasn't a game day and nothing else was going on in the city, so it was smooth sailing up to exit 74. Just a hop off the interstate, a left turn, and then another left and then blammo! There's Jerry's in all its glory. I was actually nervous and excited driving up to it. I can't say I've been excited about going into a record store in ages, but the reviews made the place sound awesome. So in I went, climbing up the steps to the second floor. Man, those steps have quite the degree of incline to 'em. I walk into the first little room and it's cluttered. Awesome. So I squeeze past the couple of employees going through some new stuff and into the main room. It was like heaven opened up. So many records. Where does one begin? I checked out the most popular stuff up front first, then quickly ditched that idea and just jumped into the deep end. A Greg Kihn album first, then a Re-Flex LP, some Robert Palmer and Steely Dan that I never had on vinyl, and on it went. I'd keep remembering tings to look for, and go rushing about. And then I tried my best to browse the 45s, but it was too overwhelming. Then I discovered the classical section, and the huge room devoted to jazz LPs, and the huge comedy selection. When did it end? How many records were in this place? Like other reviewers have stated, if you love vinyl, you're gonna spend a ton of time in here just looking and looking and looking. And Jerry was playing some great tunes to shop to as well, so that's always a plus. I was in there almost two hours and I could have stayed longer. I spent 30 bucks on my finds. As I handed my cash to Jerry, he told me to remember to check out the basement section located downstairs right next door. "Lots of good rock records in there for a buck," he told me. My mind imploded. I walked downstairs and back outside and pondered visiting the basement, but I decided to save that for the next time. If I hadn't had more shopping to do that day, I would have gone in and lost even more time and money in the best way I could ever imagine. I got home and all my records were in impeccable shape and sounded amazing. Having vinyl again reminds me of when I was a kid and would buy records and would just sit around and listen to them all the way through, looking at the covers and reading the lyrics sheets if they were included, and just listening. I haven't had that experience in a long time. It's easy to forget after years of CDs and mp3s on shuffle all the time. I'm definitely going to be a customer of Jerry's for the long haul. Dude. Duuuuude. This place is absolutely IN. SANE. I just... I can't get over it. Jerry's was the first record store I visited in Pittsburgh and I seriously thought, "This is it. I've been to the record store to end all record stores". It's hardly EVEN a record store, much less a gigantic warehouse stuffed to the brim with all things vinyl related. Things I love about Jerry's: Great for everything before 2000 Amazing prices The sheer quantity Wide variety Things I don't really love about Jerry's: THE AMOUNT OF RECORDS HERE IS JUST SO OVERWHELMING OMG No new releases The environment/atmosphere - super musty That being said, if you go to Jerry's, either plan your trip to be at LEAST an hour long or know exactly what you're looking for prior to visiting. I've only gone here a few times and every time, I spend the first half hour staring dumbfounded and confused. Really, just go to the back and look at their aisles and aisles of 45's. Absolutely absurd. Addendum: Make sure to test things out on the turntable they have there! I've picked up some records that have been quite scratched (still playing it and loving it). What a great record store! Every city has a record store like this. SF has Amoeba, NY has Bleecker Music and so on. Jerry's has Pittsburg covered. It's just outside of the city in a second floor walkup. As you go up the stairs, you see vinyl being used to cover up the wood that supports the handrail. Once you get to the top of the stairs, you see what looks like a dump truck worth of records that are getting sorted and priced for the store. As you walk in, you become overwhelmed with vinyl. It's everywhere! This is great because they have every style you could think of. You literally have from Dixieland to Plastikman! The first day I came to Jerry's I took it all in and went straight for my "go to" rock artists. Unfortunately, they didn't have "Wish You Were Here" or "Coda", but did have "Tommy" and "Classic Yes". This is probably because people go straight for these sought after artists (as I did). I headed back the next day having a good idea of what areas to hit and how to prioritize the order I dig. After only 2 hours I got a healthy stack of 14 records. This is only 1/3 of records I wanted to look through, but my budget and time limited me to that. Many gems came to me as most older records should. I could list them, but that would add some hefty paragraphs to this review....and bore those who aren't into the finds. The topper to this all was that each record was 3 or 4 dollars. The "better" LPs were 7 and 8 dollars. Most were in very good condition. If there were any blemishes, they were accounted for during pricing. They do a good job at being fair all around. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was because I'm unable to give a 4 1/2. I couldn't give it a 5, because some styles and artists were everywhere, which makes it more time consuming and difficult to dig and find. This happens at any big record store with many different genre's. Since, I worked at a record store for 5 years....I get how difficult that task is and don't hate. All in all, this is definitely a "must stop in" spot when in town.. read more

Couldn't say enough good things about Jerry's records if I tried. It's huge, the selection is epic, the prices are amazing and it's freaky in a totally non threatening way. So an overview: The selection is unreal. Jerrys has all sorts of stuff! If you're looking for an old album and they don't have it, it's probably because someone came before you to get it. But broadly, they really do have everything: Rock, pop, jazz, classical, soundtracks, alternative, folk and the list goes on. Prices are amazing. Everything is very cheap. Most albums are in the camp of three to seven dollars though a few are as high as nine. If you go to any large city you'll find any of these albums double or triple what Jerry's is asking. You can't get mad at these prices at all. Everything was organized wonderfully. Jerry's is huge and the fact that everything is so well organized makes a huge difference. If you're like me and there's always few specific records your looking to add to your collection, a place like Jerrys can be overwhelming at first glance. However, if you know what you want the organization of the store makes it super approachable. The one caveat is the quality of some the album conditions. A lot of the album covers here are in rough shape. I didn't notice any issues with the records themselves and I looked through a ton. Didn't really see anything in mint and very few items in near mint. Also, If you're looking for new records don't come here. It's all old stuff. Really don't waste your time. If you live anywhere around The greater Pittsburgh area or are in town, you have to check out Jerry's. You won't regret it! read more
