She is an incredible teacher and her sessions are challenging and every class I feel like she designed the flow for exactly what I need at the moment. Her energy is so positive and motivating. Recently during the height of the pandemic I was experiencing such bad pain in my leg that I had an energy healing session with Atthena. WOW! If you are even remotely considering a yoga class, you should absolutely go to AtthenaYoga. As an MBA grad, working 60-80 hours/week in corporate strategy for a Fortune 500 company, yoga is very much outside of my comfort zone. So I NEVER enjoyed yoga; I'm more of a high-impact/weight lifting/cardio workout kind of person. I always felt awkward, confused and uncomfortable doing yoga. I decided to give Atthena's class a try when she first started because I had been training for a marathon, and I've been regularly taking both her Stretch, Tone & Relax and Relax & Restore classes since. Atthena is literally the only person that was able to convince me to really enjoy yoga. Her Stretch, Tone & Relax classes are challenging, but moves at a pace that even beginner yogis can follow. This class is amazing for opening up each body part, and as a runner, this has really helped stretch out my entire body after constantly hitting the pavement (quads and IT band!!). I always leave this class sweating, and I'm sore the next day. And unlike so many other yoga studios out there now that blast hip hop music and have fused dancing with yoga and pilates with yoga, this is "true" yoga and also gets to the heart of addressing not just the physical, but also the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of things. The Relax & Restore class has been a godsend for me. After working long hours and living in chaotic NYC, this class is my moment to completely disconnect with the world. I hadn't been sleeping well for a while, and every time I leave this class, I feel so relaxed and well-rested. I try so hard to stay awake during this class, but I always fall asleep! I feel so incredible, refreshed and rejuvenated afterward and then heading back home is a struggle because all I want to do is lay there... Also the Airweave mats she uses are INSANELY comfortable. As a teacher, Atthena is really great about fixing your positioning and providing words of encouragement; her voice is also really soothing, and directions are clear. I found this to be extremely helpful since I had no idea what I was doing for a while, and I've learned so much in the few months I've been going to her classes. So if you're a beginner, this is most definitely the class for you. You'll never feel like you're left alone to figure out what to do. Atthena guides you every step of the way. So, while I have to admit that I've never enjoyed doing yoga, AtthenaYoga was by far the best yoga class I have ever gone to, and it just might change my mind about yoga. First of all, Atthena is such an attentive instructor. I was really, really impressed by how much care she puts into helping her students with their posture, alignment, and technique (Yvonne W. explains this perfectly in her review so I'm echoing her), and her voice is SO soothing! At some of the other yoga classes I've been to, you can tell the instructor has mantras that he/she has memorized and gives during every class and you fall asleep because you feel like you're being lectured at--but with Atthena's voice, you simply relax because her voice inspires trust and the feeling that you're in a safe, calm place. I was also really impressed that Atthena worked around my wrist issues. One of my big qualms with yoga is that there's so much pressure on the wrists from doing all the poses, but Atthena went through several ways for me to lighten the pressure on my wrists. A+! Lastly, you do break a sweat in the class, and I definitely felt like I got a great stretch out of it. It's a wonderful way to start your morning! read more

While there are many places to go out and do Yoga today, very few will apply the level of ease, focus, and compassion that AtthenaYoga does to each and every one of it's students. Great for the advanced Yogi, beginner student, or idiot who forgot that jeans are not appropriate yoga attire, AtthenaYoga takes the time not only to teach you how to do Yoga but also in how to apply its practices in everyday life (which for many of us, I'm sure a few extra ways to shake of the stress of the day would be welcomed). Every other studio is packed "mat to mat" with people who signed up last minute on Class Pass or are squeezing in a quick session after work but before drinks -- Going to AtthenaYoga is the exact opposite experience. You learn about the ways to focus on what's important in your life, take care of your body, and get a pretty decent work out. You will leave every class wondering why you didn't do this type of thing earlier that week or month and look forward to the next session. As for myself, I only recently started to get into Yoga and working with Atthena has been a great way to ease myself into the process. She's patient and encouraging and makes the process so much more personal than at the local gym. I've also recently bought a yoga mat, so i'm clearly in this for the long haul. I want to begin by saying this is my first review on Yelp, but I felt the need to write it as I felt a bit slighted and frustrated with AtthenaYoga. I met Atthena a few months ago at a health fair at my school. She was positive, enthusiastic, and knowledgable from the start. I've wanted to try yoga for a while, but was intimidated by class settings, so her private sessions were appealing. Originally, they were agreed to be $50/session until the new year (3 sessions later) when we would go up to $65/session. She said she had a soft spot for teachers and thus offered me a small discount, $20 less a session than she usually charges her clients. As a teacher, this seemed fairly reasonable and we met weekly for about an hour to an hour and a half in her apartment. The good news: the sessions were incredible. Atthena was flexible, understanding, and completely positive and supportive the entire time. She forced me to challenge myself, but did so in an encouraging way. I really loved her enthusiasm and genuinely felt like she loved teaching yoga. The best part of our sessions was a small (about 5 minutes) meditation at the end that really brought it all together. I looked forward to working with her every week and felt myself getting stronger. The not-so-great: less than 48 hours before our next session, Atthena texted me to say she has to start charging me the full price of $100/session, a $35 jump. When I responded by saying that the prices were too high, she offered me a group of 5 sessions for $440 or $85/session. This was still too much and I was a little upset at this point so I declined. I now work with a much more affordable teacher. What bothered me about this situation was that we had an agreement, made just a few weeks earlier and that I wasn't given much notice that these prices would change so much in such a short time. Had this been an in person conversation or at least a heads up, I would've been much more satisfied. To raise the price of a session by more than 50% so quickly seemed ridiculous. I never would've done private yoga sessions had I known it was truly that expensive from the beginning. Instead, I was lulled into a sense of an affordable plan, all for it to be changed so quickly. Atthena is an incredible teacher and I enjoyed working with her while I could. If you can afford it, it's certainly worth it. However, like an early reviewer said before, it was only a matter of time before Atthena started charging high rates like fancy NYC yoga studios. I highly recommend AtthenaYoga. As a member, I come to class almost every day and I love how the classes are always different. Atthena's ability to create variety but also review and build on what has been taught really allows me to improve but also learn and grow. Atthena is such a great teacher. Her guidance and assists have really helped me improve my postures and has helped me build more awareness about myself. In the two months that I have been practicing yoga, I already feel stronger and more flexible. I have also noticed a difference in how I feel every day. There is a nice flow to the positions which range from basic to advanced, and Atthena's voice is **incredibly** soothing. Both my mind and body felt rejuvenated after the session. Given the smaller size classes, Atthena offers frequent posture adjustments for her students (including amazing shoulder rubs!). I am a beginner at yoga and had been to a few classes at Exhale to try it; my experience at Exhale could not convince me to incorporate yoga into my daily life. Then I went to a class with Atthena - and immediately changed my mind. Not only did she demonstrate yoga done right, she embodies the positive effect that yoga can have on one's mind and personality. The class never felt rushed, we spent ample time on each position, and Atthena took the time to correct every one of our postures and positions - I was able to correct for many of my bad habits carried over from Exhale. This is important because most yoga classes feel like a series of motions without any goal, but such is not the case with Atthena. I've been doing a variety of yoga on and off for 7 years from Bikram to vinyasa to ashtanga. I've also gone to a bunch of different yoga studios in NYC like Modo Yoga and Laughing Lotus. AtthenaYoga has very small class sizes (about 8-10 students) so you're never crammed in mat-to-mat with another student -- something I find especially distracting. Also, Atthena is one of the most attentive teachers I've ever had the pleasure of practicing with. Her adjustments are always helpful and she pushes you to be better without pushing you beyond your comfort level. Her flows from class to class have the perfect balance of newness and consistency so you don't get bored or lost. I first tried Yoga about 5+ years ago - but never really enjoyed it. I decided to give AtthenaYoga a chance, and it was a transformative experience. I have been a member of AtthenaYoga for a few months now, and it has been one of the best additions to my life. I go anywhere between 3-4x a week, and I can always expect an excellent class each time. Atthena's classes are always fresh, different, and creative. While you can always expect variety in her classes, some things that are always consistent are Atthena's attentiveness, friendliness, and care for her students. I love her adjustments and can feel myself improving each time. I equally love yoga and meditation and always feel stretched out and relaxed after her classes. Atthena usually teaches a pretty challenging class, but she'll tone it down or slow it down if you request it or if there are a few beginners in the class. Having moved to NYC only two days ago and still battling my jet lag, this Saturday morning session was my much needed energy boost. It was an awesome experience. After neglecting yoga for I am embarrassed to say how long, I went to a Saturday morning class feeling nervous, stiff, and achy from a tense week at work. The clean, well-apportioned studio was a haven from the sweltering midtown heat and upon entering I instantly felt the tension in my body ease. Atthena's routines are great for both newbies and more experienced yogis. The routines give you the comfort to breathe and the space to push and challenge yourself. I was also impressed that she found the time to approach every student at least once to help guide their bodies into the optimal position for a pose. When we started going into the more intense poses I found myself wondering why she wasn't saving those till the end only to realize that this was the end, and over an hour had gone by without me noticing! As an avid restorative yoga fan, I have to say I have tried more classes than I can count. After disappointment after disappointment with the restorative classes offered in the city (overcrowded, loud, not truly "restorative", etc.) I am so happy to confidently say I have found the best there is! Atthena is one of the kindest instructors you will ever meet. She is calm, caring, and welcomes you into her class the first second you meet her. The studio is the perfect size and the yoga mats are absolutely incredible. It sounds insignificant, but I have never taken a class on a more comfortable mat! When you are holding poses and meditating for an extended period of time, things like this are crucial.
