While cost was important, we ultimately selected John and Canty Brothers Construction because we felt most comfortable with his communication style - something which you cannot underestimate the value of when undertaking a project such as ours. There was never a point during the six month project when we felt as though we were either being taken advantage of or had made a mistake in contractor selection. We were also quite impressed with and trusted his opinion on building methods and materials, product knowledge, and clear desire to provide a quality product and ensure customer satisfaction. We chose to live in our home during the renovation, which can be a very high-stress situation. While it was not entirely stress-free, Canty Brothers did their best to ensure we were as comfortable as possible the entire time. Both my husband and I work full-time, but were fully involved in the project, receiving updates before we departed for the day as well as when we came home. They communicated with us via email and phone throughout the day if something came up, and were sure to involve us in important decisions right down to those that were a bit more mundane at our request. Our home and grounds were kept as neat as possible during the project, and they made an effort to clean those areas which we were still living in at the end of each work day. We were very pleased with the entire Canty Brothers team, as well as the subcontractors they work with. All were professional, cordial and performed great work. If and when there were issues, John and his team were extremely responsive and quick to resolve them. My husband and I made the mistake of not holding money back from Canty Construction. It was the height of the pandemic and companies were panicking. I mistakenly felt that if we showed good faith in this company, they would reciprocate. I was wrong. They took our money, and failed to complete the work. I have maintained the documentation showing how they ignored our requests, locked us out of our project as punishment when we asked questions, and failed to complete work in a timely fashion. Yelp is not the place to argue my case, however. We'll do that in court. A year later we are still patiently waiting for contractual and warranty items to be completed. I ask for a timeline and only get vague replies. They have come back and fixed minor repairs, but more significant work is pushed back or refused, such as roof repair, and gutter installation, and even a plumbing repair. We paid 653,000 dollars. We are disappointed with the lack of clear communication, organization, and follow through. Because we paid in full, they are not rushing to complete poor and incomplete work.

Our front porch was in need of some major updating (a lot of rotting wood, railings were wobbly, pillar trim and paint coming off, etc). They were able to squeeze us in their busy schedule which I totally appreciate. Jason was very honest with what work needed to be done as I initially only asked for new railings. I didn't want to wait until the rotting wood got worse so I agreed and trusted his professional opinion. Thank goodness I did because there was a little more damage from water and ants that he found which I didn't want to deal with down the road. He used pvc to wrap the base of the pillars (which looks so much better and well proportioned) and replaced all our risers and kick board with pvc too. I am all for low maintenance so I'm glad I don't have to worry about rotting wood again! He even replaced our electrical outlet to a more low profile one. Jason is a perfectionist...very detail-oriented and meticulous, he kept pointing things out that I would never have noticed and fixed the issue promptly. He and his worker were respectful of the property, cleaned up after themselves, and were on time. I can't forget about Kristin (Jason's wife and company manager) who was very communicative in regards to scheduling, estimates, etc. She was very responsive and got back to me quickly whenever I had a question (a rare trait these days!). Overall, I would definitely recommend Bonsai Builders and look forward to hiring them again in the future. I've already received so many compliments online. Leader was a little more expensive than some bids we got, but I honestly think when changing the face of your house, you get what you pay for. Leader dealt with the City, the permits, the architect, and managed every detail of the project. Lauren dealt with permits and the front end of the project (because I knew nothing when we started all this), and Kaitlyn (construction manager) managed all the contractors and worked with us to deal with contingencies as they arose. We replaced the windows and door on the front of the house. We excavated 14,000 pounds of concrete stairs (layered for over 100 years), we replaced the siding on the front. We had roofers and electricians to deal with. The carpenters that built the porch (Zenon!!!) were masterful and executed the architectural plans perfectly. The structure and roof were completed in 6 weeks start to finish. I appreciate how communicative Leader is, I appreciate how carefully and neatly their contractors worked, I appreciate that every single person who worked on our property was incredibly professional. We absolutely adore our porch. It looks like a totally different house. We couldn't be more pleased with the work of this excellent company.

They still planned to come out but the weather was awful. The installer called to apologize that he would not be able to come. I was relieved because I didn't want anyone getting hurt on account of us! In my opinion this is something they needed to bring up right away but instead they finished the job, then came to me afterwards and insisted this was standard practice. In my 30 years of hiring contractors I've never had one come to me after the fact and expect me to pay 50% more than we agreed. So while the work was good, I couldn't recommend using them if you want to know your total cost before you start the project.

From my personal experience, I would not recommend hiring this company for any construction or…read moreremodeling work. My shower remodel which should have taken 1-2 days to complete took over one year and required three separate attempts by the owner, Graciano Machado, (aka: Greg) and his workers to complete. To this day, l am unable to use the shower as it will require me to have it demoed and repaired. Throughout the process of having my shower completed, I had several issues to include, my shower walls coming apart on two separate occasions due to improper install, the grout not being properly applied, leaving several holes and cracks throughout, the glass sliding door not closing fully, and much more. But the biggest issue of all, was that, Greg Machado violated basic sanitary building standards by failing to install a cement backer board, which is a required material in the State of Massachusetts to prevent moisture damage and ensure proper waterproofing. He was well aware of this, but did not correct it. Despite giving multiple opportunities and addressing my concerns to Greg and his team, they were not able to complete my shower correctly. I was met by constant delays to have my shower repaired, and i was met with some dishonesty from Greg's behalf. As a result of these issues, I pursued legal action through small claims court and was awarded a judgment in my favor. The matter is still ongoing as I work to collect that judgment which has yet to be fulfilled. I have also noticed that other individuals including a business have also pursued legal action through small claims against Greg, his wife (co-owner) and his business. From my experience, I strongly advise others to exercise caution before hiring this contractor.
