So, back in the days when I used Twitter, one of the pages I followed, a page about British things…read morethat made Britain Britain, they posted a picture of this pub, and I thought that this was the pub with the coolest name ever, so I actually made a trek to visit it and have a beer. It is a bit of a hike from the station, but it was worth it, especially as it is a really old pub (though the ceilings are low, so watch out if you are tall like me). Yeah, this pub is very British, and pretty awesome, but I came here because of the name (and there is a story behind it as well).

It did change names to the appallingly bland 'New Inn' at one point, but has the old name back now. They also believe the pub is haunted. The pub itself is a very nice dark woody old style looking pub with quite a low roof (I has to duck slightly). They serve a handful of good Cornish ales and have a few tables outside, where you take in the sun weather permitting. The do food but I had already eaten. We were greeted as we walked in and seated at a nice table. Drinks and food were ordered and didn't take too long before we were served our meals. My fish & chips were cooked perfectly and was really nice. My husband enjoyed his pasta carbonara, our friend had chicken fajitas (forgot to take a picture) and said it was really lovely, and my son had fish fingers and chips. The Smugglers Den Inn is a 16th century thatched inn with family, beer garden, childrens play area and ample parking. The beer garden is where we like to crash and relax. While the kids play on the apparatus we chill with a ool drink in the sun and order from the menu full of lovely food and they always have plenty of specials on the board all made using the freshest local ingredients. It is situated in a little village called Trebellan, near Cubert, less than than 15 minutes from Newquay. You approach down a steep, high sided road which is typically Cornish and the pub is right before you and very welcoming. They have regular live entertainment and also have an annual Real Ale and Pie Festival which is is it's 9th year. It's definitely worth pulling off the beaten track and seeking it out for a refreshing treat.

The onion rings were the usual frozen kind though and the lasagne was tasty if lacking the expected White sauce layer. The steak is £13.95 and so at the top end of pub prices but good value all the same. All the meals are available in kids portions (rather than a separate kids menu), the children were welcome in the bar and allowed to play on the pool table too. All in all a family friendly place to finish a long day on the nearby Praa Sands beach.

Not some anaemic pattie but a right beefy, tasty morsel and worthy of a big thumbs up. I'm stuffed and finally ready for the night ahead. Didn't try the ales as I'm on business and driving.
