Cost Cutting: Well if you don't see "inflation" kicking in, you better have your eyes checked. Everywhere store I've gone to has some sort of price increase. Some things I agree with, but other product increases I consider "Corporate Greed". Anyways most people have a sweet tooth at some point of time in their life. Some more heavier than others. I use to but it faded. However I do enjoy some sweet stuff. The other day I was picking up some licorice (LOL) and noticed a candy I had never scene. It was called "Zebra Bars" . They come in a small bag individually wrapped. And the main element is "Peanut Butter". They say the Bars are their most natural product with the fewest ingredients. Homemade peanut butter from fresh roasted peanuts, sugar for sweetness, and a dash of salt for savory goodness. I bought a bag for $1.25 at a discount store. When I bought them I thought they would be hard candy like many other kinds. No, they were much softer and easier on your teeth. I gave them a 4 they could have put a bit more peanut butter in them. But they were good and I suggest if you like Peanut Butter, buy a bag. read more

This place is AWESOME! I had sentimental reasons for visiting as my mom's favorite candy when I was growing up was a chick-o-stick. Their candy is the stuff of legend, at least to me. Just being there and seeing the candy brought back so many good memories from my childhood. If you live in Lufkin and your kids get a chance to go on a field trip here, volunteer to chaperone! If you've never had a piece of candy off the production line, it's one of the rare treats of life. There is a lot of history here too. The factory store isn't real fancy, but you get a lot of fresh candy for a little price. I brought home two big bags of candy for $7 plus tax yesterday. They were fresher than you get at the retail stores. There is no Willy Wonka or oompa-loompas, but they got a real good group of people working there who are just as friendly and generous. If you go, check the operating hours first to make sure you don't get disappointed. They even have sugar-free options for those of us who are supposed to be too old to be eating candy anymore. read more

As a child in 1980ish I took a tour of Atkinson Candy as a field trip for school. I remember eating candy right off of the assembly line and it was warm and fresh. I can really only post what my wife related to me. But while we were in Lufkin doing things with our year old, one of the things on her list was to stop by Atkinson's Candies. She wanted to look around and find something different or unusual to take to a get together this coming weekend. I know they have been in business a very long time and I've enjoyed their Candies since I was a kid. So we found the company and I parked to let her and our little one go in. She went to two doors before she found the shop on the far east end of the building. I was expecting her to be gone for a little while looking at what they had. But when I looked up they were on their way back to the truck!!! I asked if they were closed to the public? She said no, but that the shop was really small, had a limited selection of all hard Candies. Not even any of the little Peanut Butter bars we all knew from being kids! I mean that's what got them in business if I remember right! So she was a little disappointed at what they had, but it wasn't only that. She said that the shop was hardly bigger than our kitchen! Our kitchen is small by my standards as we just moved from a big open kitchen with an island, to a small kitchen that is only like a 9x9 foot square area!!! But she said the thing that turned her around the most was the smell. She said that it smelled like old sugar. I'm not sure how that smells, but she did and said it was not a good smell. So I hope maybe the folks that manage and run the place see this and come up with something that would make their business shop more attractive to people who visit like we did. It's been in business for over 100 years and even survived the great depression. That's how good the candies are.

We thought this would be a cool place to visit, and it would probably an awesome tour of the factory itself for scouts or classes, but the store front itself was not a good experience. The candy is old, we purchased peanut butter bars, Chico sticks, coconut bars and peanut brittle. We haven't tried the peanut brittle yet but the other 3 were very old. The coconut bar was old and sugary, the Chico stick is like a butterfinger without the chocolate...we love butterfingers, but you know when you a butterfinger that is not fresh and it is hard and chewy...well that's the way the Chico stick was. I think if it were fresh and flaky it would be good. My husband said he loved the little peanut butter bars when he was kid, but he said these were not fresh and he did not like them. The store was smelly, not sure what the smell was. I think this could be a cool place but the store front needs work. Rotate your stock and restock. Don't sell this old stuff it will hurt your brand. read more

Stopped in Atkinson's for the first time a few months ago. Now I'm gonna have to drive back up to Lufkin cause I am hooked on those little bars of goodness. When I lived in Lufkin, Texas I made all my visits to the bank personal, that way I could get Atkinson Peanut bars free. Now that I am living in Illinois, I buy my candy in 5 pound lots from Amazon. Was excited to go there but disappointed in the product freshness. I assume they are selling off inventory that is getting old when I was expecting "factory fresh". Definitely avoid the chewy candies like SLO-Poke and Long Boy as they were hard to chew. The C-O-Sicks and Peanut Butter Bars were ok but not as fresh as what we buy at Sam's or grocery stores. read more

I am from Lufkin but moved to California in 1988. Every time I visit Lufkin for vacation, Atkinson Candy is always on my list of things to do while there. I bring candy back not only for myself but for family and friends and especially the ones who knows about the Chick-o-sticks, peppermint sticks, peanut butter logs, coconut logs and all of the old fashion candy that they grew up on. I always leave extra room in my suitcase to bring back the numerous bags of candy!!
