Ah yes - the Royal Cheese!…read more Not actually a restaurant specializing in hamburgers but a clothing boutique focused on upscale street-style fashion, I got to know this store pretty well during my 4-day stay in Paris. You see, I stayed in an apartment located directly above the shop. This meant I was always coming and going, passing through and sharing a private door with the well-mannered gentlemen working at the Royal Cheese. Because we shared far too many hellos to still be strangers, I considered it my duty to check out the boutique's wares. A well-curated selection of skinny jeans and soft t-shirts, the style here is definitely a carefully-plotted combination of 'I'm-not-trying-too-hard' garments and the accessories that pull the look together: cognac-hued leather satchels, vintage-look belts and sharp shoes. It's a bit pricey, but we all know the tousled, 'just got out of bed' look doesn't just happen; it's orchestrated with precision.

My travel partner who had been looking for THE leather jacket, a combination of: perfect fit, unique design, and timeless cool ... he managed to find THE jacket here. (Note: We have been trolling the shops of LA, SF and the internet for several months.) The garcons manning the shop were geniaux, and hip without being too much like our hometown boys in Los Feliz... those guys can be too much. (It's not safe to ride a bike without brakes around LA, let alone ride a bike with a camera around your neck.) While uniquely different, French Trotters reminded me a teeny tiny bit of Mohawk General Store on Sunset Blvd. And that made me smile because I like that shop. Cool stuff. Cool people. For anyone looking for a unique gift for a discerning guy this is the place.

I discovered COS upon recommendation from an Italian friend. While in Bologna, Italy I took a peek…read moreat their store but didn't really have a lot of time to look. Fast forward a week later, I'm in Paris and I stumble upon the COS store in the Marais. There are two COS stores in Paris but the Marais store carries the full collection. What I like about COS is that they carry many basic colors that you can mix and match. We're talking black, white, and gray. They have casual, business and special occasion attire too. Something for everyone and for every occasion. The styles are v-e-r-y cool with unusual mixed fabrics used together, asymmetric cuts to the skirts, unexpected shapes to the neckline or styling on the clothing. I haven't been this excited about discovering a clothing brand EVER. Needless to say, I tried on many dresses, tops and accessories and came away with a cart full of clothes. Whoopeee! Now I can no longer say I have nothing in my closet to wear. COS has solved my dilemma and given my wardrobe some excitement and fun. As a division of the H&M group (from Sweden), I'm excited to have discovered COS and I hope that I'll find their clothes sometime soon in the USA.

We walked into one of the most unique store layouts I've seen. In the front, they had a highly curated selection of popular items and in the back it is old school no frills vintage shopping where you have to sort through a lot of trogs to find your princess. I tried like 14 different things on, and was stuck on whether I should get this beautiful pinstripe suit or not. I was looking at myself in the mirror for far too long before my girlfriend said "don't you have another navy blue pin stripe suit?" I scoffed and responded viciously "Pfftt yeah but this is a deeper navy, that one is closer to an ocean bl--" when I was stopped mid sentence by the rational half of my brain that realized she was completely right. I put it down and didn't end up getting anything, as my Chase Sapphire Preferred card has suffered enough on this trip. Wifey got these sick blue sunglasses that I am lowkey jealous I didn't find first, but I would never tell her that. She was on her game. Fairplay. IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

The owner supports local textiles and independent designers, and it definitely shows through the collections of unusual patterns and silhouettes and their smorgasboard of vintage-inspired boots and heels. After I commented on the propietor's "The Satorialist" book, prominently displayed near the cashier's desk (because, duh, I have and LOVE IT), he nonchalantly told me that Scott's girlfriend, Garance Dore (now a veritable photographer-slash-blogger-cum-fashionista in her own endearing right) used to frequent the store before she made it big. If that's not Parisian chic endorsement enough, I'm not sure what is. Oh, and I got a free pair of "bienvenue a Paris" panties (his words, not mine) with my high-heel purchase. Which meant I didn't need to do laundry in Paris. Score.
