    Atcher Island overview
    Mike O.

Want to wipe out your kids and leave them dead-tired in about 2 hours' time? Bring them to Atcher Island. This is an outdoor pool and pretty fancy water park located in the southwest end of Schaumburg, within sight of the Hanover Park water tower. Despite being savvy suburbanites, this is one of those gems even we didn't know about till we went searching for a water park off the beaten path. We came here on the 4th of July and despite a packed parking lot, we were surprised at how un-crowded the park was once inside. In about 2-1/2 hours, they were wrapped in their towels and ready to call it a day. The water-loving Stunt Boy fell asleep in the car on the way home. Run by the Schaumburg Park District, this place really is a bargain compared to Mystic Waters in Des Plaines or a big park like at Great America or even one of those indoor hotel water parks. Being so far from the retail side of Schaumburg, it remains mostly undiscovered by outsiders so it's not too crowded. It has a max capacity of only 450, which means you won't spend the afternoon standing on a stairway waiting to go down some water slide a few times. The park's most prominent features are two large water slides. The top of the water slide tower resembles a straw tiki hut. The blue slide has twists and turns and descends into a shallow 3-foot pool. The yellow slide is an enclosed tube with a very steep descent leading into a circular chamber that spins you around a few times before dropping you through the bottom, giving you a "royal flush" into an 8-foot deep pool, while jets of air bubbles shoot up your nostrils. But if that's not your game, don't worry. There's literally an entire water playground for smaller kids, complete with tipping buckets, multiple slides, and sprayers they can point and shoot. A giant bucket of water depicting an angry Polynesian god I call The Big Kahuna fills and discharges a huge waterfall on unsuspecting people below, or a few daring kids who await the massive deluge underneath. There's also a swimming pool that is only 4 feet at its deepest point. It too has some sprayers, so you can swim or play there. Off to the side and away from the action, there's even a shallow wading pool with a small water slide for the under-3 kids or even babies to splash around. On the north end, a small restaurant sells drinks, cheesy nachos and some sandwiches in case you want a snack. Locker rooms aren't spectacular, but they are clean and appear well-maintained. I recommend bringing your own padlock, since renting a padlock is $5. Otherwise, you can always leave your stuff in the car, get your hand stamped at the desk and come back to get it later. In all, it's a fabulous park not too far away and at a good price you can afford to bring your family. Two adults and 2 kids for $32 for non-residents can't be beat for a park of this magnitude.

There are two cool large slides: a twisty turny blue slide and a yellow "toilet bowl" slide.

There are so many pools in the North Shore to choose from and this is where my fam most recently chose to cool off. When we first arrived the main pool was closed for swimming lessons so we made our way to the toddler play area, which is basically a park and sprayer in the middle of very shallow water. I was about to make myself comfortable on a lounge chair when an announcement was made that the main pool was open to the public (around 11am on a Saturday). My 4 yr old dragged my husband over, which meant I had to go too since my 2 year old insists on doing everything that his big sister does. Sigh. The water was absolutely freezing and no area was shallow enough for my kids to stand. More work for me, but (of course) the kids had a blast. I personally prefer Hidden Creek in Highland Park for swimming while my kids are young and not swimming perfectly on their own. The main pool has both shallow and deep ends so one of us can hang w/ my 4 yr old in the deeper water, while the other can hang w/ my 2 yr old in the shallow water...and he's perfectly content being in the same pool as his sister. The water slide in the shallow end is also a big draw for both my kids (and many others) at Hidden Creek. However, as my kids get older I could see myself loving Meadowhill as much as my kids did. There's also an additional side with a very impressive water slide and diving boards as the kids grow. Also worth noting that Glencoe residents pay Northbrook prices here making it one of the more affordable pools in the North Shore for my fam

The large main pool is divided into areas for family use, lap swimming, and adults. There is a separate, well equipped "kiddie" pool for children, a diving pool, and two water slides with a splash down pool. One slide is for use with a flotation device and the other is for use without. There is a refreshment stand that is open during certain hours, and vending machines for use at other times, You can't bring food into the pool area; you must eat in the designated eating area, which is very nice. There are nice areas around the pool for relaxing on the deck chairs. In recent years, Meadowhill pool has been expertly maintained and kept beautifully clean. They have certain hours for lap swimming. The hours change from time to time, so it is important to check with the front desk for up to date information. They generally keep one or two lanes open during the afternoon "rush hour" when the rest of the pool is in use for swimming lessons. Aesthetically, Meadowhill Aquatic Center is one of the nicest outdoor pools I have ever seen. It is landscaped beautifully with native plants along the south side of the pool next to the family picnic area, which can be rented for parties and other events. A couple of times each summer the Park District sponsors a special night at the pool. Usually they will have a DJ, refreshments, games, and prizes. Signs for these activities are posted in advance. The only issue I've run into is weather, which affects all outdoor facilities. They make everyone leave the pool area at the first indication of an approaching storm, so be prepared if you come on a cloudy day.

The classes seem excellent. pickleball game here looks legit. The staff are friendly and helpful. Locker rooms are secure, fully stocked with toiletries and about as clean as you could expect. And, yes bros, older guys with no modesty walking around are here as well. The prices aren't that bad, but I did come from CA where a gym membership to a higher end club usually costs a small mortgage, a 10% ownership stake in your soul and your firstborn child. Here's the two downers for me that keep the club from being 5 star. 1) They have a dedicated work area for members. Super useful because a lot of us are coming during work hours or commute a long way to get here. However, the work area/club lounge legit sounds like a club. The lounge is also right along the hallway so there's a lot of gym bros congratulating each other on hitting the PB or ladies walking by who are totes excited about hearing Fate of Ophelia during HIT class. I get it. I'm a Swifty as well and I'm the first to admit that Taylor slays. But I ain't yelling it down the hall. Midtown has a work area/lounge and they commit to it. If you're going to add a space like this, commit. Do it right. 2) Y'all need to up the cafe game or I'll call John Taffer and Gordon Ramsay. Soggy tortilla on a wrap is sacrilege. Where's the two Italian dudes yelling "not approved" when I need them. I know I'm nitpicking. Maybe I'm unfair. After all, it is a gym. But if you're positioning yourself as not just a fitness club but an experience, commit to it. don't half a$% something. Whole a$% it.
