During my recent trip to Michigan, I discovered that the Detroit Metro area has the largest concentration of Arabic speakers with 4.7% of population aged 5 to adult primarily speaking Arabic at home (https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/05/18/5-facts-about-arabic-speakers-in-the-us/#:~:text=The%20Detroit%20metro%20area%20also,1.0%25%20of%20the%20total%20population.). As such, there was a plethora of excellent restaurants to select from offering Middle Eastern cuisine, one of the best of which was Asya. As is my penchant, when visiting a new city I pop open my trusty Yelp app for places to try and Asya was one of the first recommendations; it doesn't hurt that some of the locals also said they serve up tasty food. Located in a strip mall off the intersection of a busy road, the parking lot is tight, so if there are no spots directly in front of the restaurants, there is more availability off to the side. I stopped by a few times while I was in town, and Asya does a brisk take-out business, especially during the predictable lunch and dinner hours. I dined in both times, so I could enjoy my meal hot and "fresh from the kitchen." The interior is fairly nondescript with tile flooring, black tables/chair combos, and a neutral color palate. But because the dining room is "cozy," it can definitely get loud with just a few tables of hungry diners. The service and hospitality are superior, as to be expected from a family run establishment. I was always greeted with a warm smile and even after just a few visits, the staff seemed to recognize me. I really like the fact that for most of their entrees, you can order either a lunch or dinner portion. The shish kafta was an AMAZING deal at $12.99 at lunch. In addition to the main dish, it is served with either a salad or soup. I opted for the lentil soup, and it was tasty. Soft lentils were stewed in a creamy base and served with a bowl of individually wrapped pita slices. Honestly, I was already getting a bit full after just the soup course. Then the generous portion of the shish kafta arrived and I could only finish 1/2 of the plate, before taking the remaining portion home for dinner. The skewered meat patties were nicely seasoned with grated yellow onion, garlic, parsley, finely chopped mint, salt/black pepper, Sumac, cinnamon, as well as other spices. They were grilled just enough to have a nice char on the exterior, yet still remain moist. Instead of French Fries, I opted to have the yellow rice which was perfect for making mini-sandwiches with the leftover pita slices from my soup. To finish the meal, I had a few pieces of the house made baklava, which was flaky and not too sweet; perfect with my afternoon coffee. On another occasion, I also got the chicken shawarma, which again, was a bargain at $6.50 (before tax) and super filling with a side of fries. There are also many good Middle Eastern restaurants in the DC area, but not the variety of "mom and pop" places like Asya and definitely not at their price point and value. read more

The service was great, very friendly and willing to help with the menu. I would come back for some local Mediterranean food. What I got: Falafel plate 3/5: I falafel exterior was very crispy which was okay, sometimes a bit too much. The interior of it was good and flavorful but nothing too excited just a standard falafel. The plate came with hummus and a kale mix, which were both standard. Asyas combo grill (high 3/5): In terms of portion, there was a lot and was happy with that. The grill came with a beef kabob, beef kafta, and chicken kabob. I thought the beef kabob was the best out of them as the cook was great making it the most tender out of the three. The chicken was juicy but a little dry in some parts and the kafta was kinda dry except the middle which disappointed me as I usually enjoy kafta. In terms of flavor I really didn't think there was much flavor in the rice or the meats so I ended up needing to use the hummus and sauce which came with it. Not saying there was no flavor but not enough. This plate also came with a option of potatoe curry, which was actually pretty good, I would want to eat a bowl of it as it was aromatic, light, and flavorful. read more

Not sure what has changed here or if people just don't know what good food tastes like but this was my experience for reference. I came here with a friend for dinner on my birthday. I chose this place based off of ratings here on Yelp and based on her wanting to go to a place in Madison Heights since it's closer to her and we didn't feel like driving to Dearborn. I live in an area in Florida now where I have a hard time getting good Mediterranean food so since I was back in MI visiting family I was excited to have a big bowl of crushed lentil soup and anything else that my little heart desired. That being said, that's what I started with. I've had crushed lentil soup many places before , and although the taste and texture varies, I always love it. This was not the case here, the soup had no flavor, and even after adding salt, which I almost never have to do with soup from a restaurant, it still wasn't edible. So much so that I ordered a different type of soup, which was just as tasteless as the crushed lentil. I thought it was just me, but my friend said the exact same thing. Had that been the only issue I would not be writing this but for my dinner I ordered the mixed grill platter and when that came, I was shocked. Not only were the pieces of meat smaller than I've ever seen at any restaurant I've ordered the same thing from, because of this everything was extremely dry and overcooked. The chicken was like cardboard, the beef that I asked to be cooked medium rare was overcooked, and the Kafta kebab was even dry. Also everything including the rice really lacked any type of flavor as if nothing had been marinated or seasoned. The entrée that my friend ordered, she also did not enjoy as she also stated that the chicken was dry and the mixed vegetables that came with the chicken were mostly an overwhelming amount of carrots. Although the restaurant seemed quiet, simply decorated and clean. the reason you go to a restaurant is to get a good cooked meal and for me it's usually something that I wouldn't or can't make it home. This sadly was not the case and I ended up stopping at a fast food restaurant on my way home to get a sandwich to eat since it was late and most things were closed on a Monday night and after all, it was my birthday. read more

We pass this place all the time and finally decided to try it out. The mixed grill for two was a great value and came with a salad, garlic, and bread. The garlic sauce was great and they gave a very generous portion. The Kafta was so good! My husband said the steak was cooked perfectly. The folks were really sweet. So glad we found this place. We ordered there chicken kabob and fries and stuffed grape leaves. Their garlic toum was some of the best I've tried. Food was phenomenal, the chicken was juicy and everything else was delicious. The entrees came with a lot of food. The staff was super friendly and helpful. The cook had us try a lentil dish (I think it was mjadra )on the house which was amazing. And they gave us baklava since it was our first time there it perfect not too sweet. The inside was clean and the staff that waited on us took care of us well and were very generous. Highly recommend.We will definitely be coming back more often. My goodness, bad experience this time!!!! I ordered us a Beef Shwarma and Chicken Kafta. We got a Chicken Shwarma and Chicken Kabob. We asked for them to remake our orders and we had to wait about 15 minutes for new sandwiches which were a Chicken Shwarma and Chicken Kafta. I wanted Beef so we again sent back the sandwich. This time it didn't take very long and we got the beef sandwich made for us. I didn't like it as much as the chicken, go figure! The owner felt very bad and took half of the bill. I think I would probably try somewhere else next time if I'm craving a sandwich. read more

Why are the really good middle eastern food places so far from Ann Arbor? Well, we do love Asya when we are in the area. We need to check next time to make sure they are making the garlic toom sauce the right way (without egg whites) because we went there before I was made aware that this viscosity cheating was going on! It seemed like it. The Turkish coffee is fantastic. Try your hand at reading your grounds...flip your empty cup onto your saucer (with a napkin on it). Let it sit for a few minutes. Then interpret the pictures in the grounds (see pics). We loved the beef and chicken kafta/koobideh, perfectly seasoned with parsley and onion, shaped on a flat skewer and grilled. The Borak egg roll triangle style appetizer was excellent (see pic), stuffed with ground beef and sauteed onions and herbs. The chicken lemon rice soup would be worth a visit in itself. It is bright, lemony and chunky. Highly recommend!! read more

Omy, what a find! Needed food b4 my dance class. Really wanted dine in service since I was on the way to another location. Was so hungry I didn't get pictures. #Srsly the best hummus I've ever had. I don't do well with garlic, but that was not an issue here at all! The tabboulah was unbelievably good and I left with enough for 2 meals in my to go box. Now, the piece de resistance-dolmades! Amazing stuffed grape leaves. Enough for a 2nd small plate. So, everything related to the food was superb. Let's dig a little deeper. All is the to go containers were Styrofoam. Not so good with that. Every box leaked, so when Igot home 3 hrs. later, I had Greek soup and soggy pita. That needs to be rectified. It was a mess. Secondly, it clearly says masks required for entry on the door. No problem, and the staff were masked. So I'm sitting in the parking lot Putting a new address in my GPS and a truck pulls up with 3 adults and 2 children. they get out of the truck and enter the restaurant and none of them have masks sign and for that reason I will not be going back to this establishment and that saddens me. We've been dealing with no shirt no shoes no service for ever now all of a sudden everybody's going to complain about something that hundreds of working people have to do on a regular basis. Very good shawarma, wonderful grape leaves (I like the meat ones much more than the veggie but both are good choices), and good kafta too. I look forward to trying more dishes. Ordered the veggie combo and replaced the spinach pie with 2 extra veggie grape leaves. The spinach pie dough was too thick looking and not with the phyllo dough that I prefer. Added a shawarma and hummus dish that comes with rice and crushed lentil. I added a lentil soup to the veggie combo. The total came to $44.49, a bit pricey. I am hoping it's all good for the price paid. I was told it would take about 10 mins. It came out in less than 10 mins. The grape leaves tasted good, but I don't love the rice at all. It's the same rice as in the almond rice. Prefer a thicker grain rice for the almond rice. The mujadara is good, better than I have had before. The house salad dressing is good as is the baba ghanouj. The crushed lentil is too thick and doesn't have much flavor and has no hint of lemon at all, which I love. The chicken and shawarma was just okay to my husband. Not worth it for the money. read more

This is a great choice for Mediterranean food. Small, unassuming place but very clean (wife is very particular about this - we've walked out of many a restaurant that fell short of her tough standards) and very friendly and accommodating staff. We ordered the chicken shawarma + babaganoush with the yellow rice and house salad, and the tabbouleh/hummus/baba appetizer. Because we were already getting baba with the dinner, they offered to replace the baba in the appetizer with falafel, which we appreciated. Not planned but proved out a very delicious lunch place for us. Went in on a Saturday noon and started with Turkish tea. It tasted very good. My wife and I shared a vegetarian combo for a change though we prefer meat over veggies but it was good for a change. Combo started with a veggie salad which was fresh and tasted good. Followed by the best baba ganoush I have tasted so far and hummus accompanied with tabbouli. Everything in the combo was fresh and delicious. I would definitely recommend anyone who is a vegetarian to try this place. This place is heaven for you guys . Love love LOVE the chicken schwarma sandwich from Asya! My friend and I were in a chicken schwarma kick for a week and tried out a few different places and A was by far the best. A sandwich so simple-chicken, pickles, and garlic wrapped in pita. Who knew it would or could taste so different at each places. I ordered the 5 person combo. I want to give 3.5 stars but Yelp doesn't let me. I want to give 4 but there were more cons than Pro's. Pro's -Rice is the main selling point. SO GOOD -Chicken Cream Chop is seasoned very well Cons -Most other middle eastern places give soup in the combo -The Kabobs were a bit smaller and less juicy compared to their competitors -Not enough almonds in the dish (they seemed to be there more as a decorative piece in the corner -Competitors usually give more rice for a 5 person platter (Again, Asya's rice tastes better though) read more

My wife and I went here for lunch not long ago. I was very impressed. Mjadara (my test dish for a Middle Eastern restaurant) was superb, the best I've had recently. Salads were very green and dressed subtly. I also had a tasty samosa-like appetizer called sambosk that was filled with potatoes and onions and a bit of spice. Our waitress was also very nice. We had lots of questions about the restaurant and she answered them well. The room is comfortable with a very relaxed atmosphere. I am lucky enough to live in an area with several good Middle Eastern restaurants. Asya is the best of these I've tried recently. I'm looking forward to going again! read more

--Probably a 4 star, but I just LOVE them. The extra star comes from the love in my heart lol -- I've been trying to find a mediterranean place in the area that will be my regular 'go to' place, but it's actually a lot harder than I thought it would be. I used to love going to Pita Pita in Ypsilanti back when they had better service and quality food for cheap. Asya turned into the place I go for my weekly chicken shwarma fix. Now, I have sampled a lot in the area. They range from fancy to not so fancy. The actual look of the establishment doesn't really make a difference to me because it's all about the food. First, let me preface I am positive that there are better, nicer places out there. However, Asya's is close to where I live, FAST to get you your food, they have excellent service AND their food is good. This is one of those little places that always remembers you. When you go in you see the same waitresses and I know that doesn't seem like a big deal, but to me it is. Call me old fashion, but I like seeing the same people and building a relationship with them. I normally go in and get the chicken shwarma sandwich which is maaaybe 4 bucks and fries. They have lunch specials too, but I work far away and have never tried them, but they are pretty economical as well. I love the chicken shwarma sandwich. Mainly because it's actual doner meat - straight off the spicket! I tried a few places before landing here and their 'chicken shwarma' was grilled marinated white meat chicken... now I am not an expert on mediterranean food, but I know that chicken shwarma is not white chicken breast meat. I always get super disappointed when the restaurant serves white seasoned chicken breast meat... Seriously..I get super sad. Foodie disappointment is something no one should have to endure. However, Asya's serves up the real deal! Also, when you walk in, you can see the meat on the spicket. Is it sad that I always look for the rotating meat when I walk into a mediterranean restaurant? I need to know that sh*t is legit. :) I have driven by this place many times and never stopped in. One night I was driving down the road thinking about what to eat and I just stopped here. I remember talking to another foodie at another restaurant and they claimed it was better than Bucharest's shwarma sandwich. Bucharest (white meat I believe) is pretty delicious, but they have their own twist on their sandwich so I don't really put it in the same category. If you are in the area, looking for friendly, fast, service with quality food - stop in! The chicken shwarma won't disappoint. It's just solid food. Fries had a great seasoning but were cold (not Asya's fault necessarily), chicken meat was dry, lamb meat was mediocre and a fairly small portion, lentil soup was meh and I don't know where the curry was in the "potato curry", very watery with 4 potato quarters and a few veggie parts.. would not recommend or at least not recommend to order for delivery read more
