I paid $180 for booty length small knotless box braids by Khadijah. I was in there until 1:30/2:00 the latest after getting started at around 10:30. They provide the hair and are very neat and quick. They even caught my short kitchen so I was super pleased. I will definitely be back.

Kinky twists from Khadijah at Astan's Hair Braiding!

I absolutely loved coming here! I got my hair done in long kinky twists. The prices were budget appropriate, the location is close to public transportation and great food, the staff are so sweet and professional, and my hair feels and looks great. The owner actually personally came around to every guest and greeted them. Khadijah did my hair and she was so quick and knowledgeable to the care of my hair and the style I wanted to achieve. Definitely coming back!!

Made an appointment through yelp and Astan was working on my hair within 30 mins. Went pretty fast and love the outcome. I also was able to use the first time customer coupon for my braids! Hair is also provided. Loved all the hairstyles I saw walking out. Will return!

    200 dollar twist...4 days later.

My appointment was for 10am on a Tuesday. a stylist becomes available around 11. There is very limited hair choices. It's the brassy blonde or the black and yellow mix or black. My hair is a Auburn base with Highlights and low lights from blonde to honey, but I settle and proceed. Hair is completed by 530 no complaints. A moderate amount of clean up is needed on the hair trimming the ends, fly away hairs and re-twisting strands to tuck my hair away. By Friday 3 days later I have 5 braids missing in the back, I contact the salon, as per the signs touch ups are free with in a week she happily repairs the 5. As I'm sitting in my Lyft a notice loose hair. But beyond the touch up what happen to quality of work and service. ok it may have been 6 versus 5 your still not going to fix it. Do braiders no longer care about the quality of the work or reputation. Please see the pictures of the back of my head, is this the representation of your salon. if someone says who did your hair would you want me to say astan African braiding salon. 200 dollars and I tipped for shoulder length twist I expected quality and authenticity from a African shop. I'm against haggling for lower prices, I want to respect someone's craft and thier time and black women deserve every dollar and I will try to support them but am I getting what I deserve? I'm disappointed not in this shop but this ongoing trend of poor braid service were the focus is mass production of heads and not quality. Which also leads me away from supporting authentic African shops to the younger African American shops with I.G followers that are attempting to protect a brand so they focus in quality. I hope this wasn't taken as bashing or malicious.

    What I wanted

Today I got my hair done in twists, what I asked for and what I got were two totally different things. They kept saying I didn't bring enough hair I then kept saying okay I will pay more for more hair( they sell hair there). But they proceeded to keep going. I told them 3 times to make the twists thicker. The process took 8 hours I was there from 9:15-4:30. I had a doctors appointment at 4:30 which I told them about an hour before hand because I didn't expect to be there that long. I thought five hours tops. On top of that they were obviously talking about me from time to Time when I was pretty patient with everything up until hour 6. The only reason I'm not giving them less stars is because even thou it is not what I asked for they did a good job as far as braiding. But I probably wouldn't return.

    Almost finished!!

Very nice girl! She was gentle with my daughter but still did a nice tight braid. It took about 3 hours for a cornrow style with added hair.

First off, the place feels big. Has nice calming music playing in the background so it's a pleasant experience visiting and even sitting in the chair for some time. The wash was about the same length of time as a wash from other places here in Chinatown, but somehow it was significantly more enjoyable. The people here know what they're doing, and my scalp feels much better than it did before, and I didn't even know if was feeling anything before. Cut was ~30 minutes, and $28 + tip. Overall, it's on the pricier end of what I've experienced so far in Chinatown, although not by much. However, the quality of the cut was much better than others. In other places, it feels a bit more rushed or cursory, but I felt like I was getting focused attention on my cut. He spent a lot of it actually in touch up and layering, which was good attention to detail. Honestly one of the best cuts I've gotten in Chinatown. Definitely beats out in quality over other mainstays like Kevin's, but at a slightly higher price point.

You call ahead and you are the only person in the salon besides her. Also, since it's a small salon, it's not expensive (although I gave a big tip because of COVID--and to support a female small business owner of color during pandemic!). If you are on the fence, I'd go (call first). Alyssa also does much fancier coloring jobs, and I might try one in the future. She seems like the right person to take a risk with. The salon has moved to a nice part of South Street (1112 South St.) where I managed to find parking without a problem.

Whenever I move to a new city and go to a new place, I can never quite articulate the hairstyle I usually get (usually I just say "2" on the sides and finger length on top). Inevitably I get a new variable cut that is either too short or long on top. At this place, all it took was one visit! On top of this, I am usually too cheap to get a shampoo, but since it is already included in the $15 price, it is an added bonus on top of a quality cut. Highly encourage anyone in Philly to give this place a try!

She smiled and agreed, and started cutting. In no time at all, she had cut the hair on one side of my head above my ear, which was the opposite of what I asked for, as I have a deformed right ear from decades of combat sports competition, and I wanted it concealed. As she had already ruined my hair on one side, I bit my tongue as she made the other side match it. I was absolutely furious, but what can a stylist do once they've taken too much off? Absolutely nothing. Now I am stuck with a haircut where my deformed ear is visible for the whole world to see because the stylist decided to give me that haircut that she wanted to give me instead of the one that I asked for. I paid for my haircut with a card and departed in a polite manner, but the moment I hit the sidewalk, I could no nothing but scream profanity as the realization that I couldn't cover my deformed ear kicked in. Now I am not only out $18, but I am stuck with a haircut which leaves me open to yet more questions along the lines of "What's wrong with your ear?" [Edit, I called the place and she offered me a refund, but this doesn't undo the damage she did to my personal appearance. I'll take the refund, but this review stands.] I grew the sides of my hair longer specifically to hide that ear, and the stylist decided that she knew better than me where my haircut was concerned, and forced her personal preferences onto my head. That stylist is very fortunate that I have superior control over my temper, because she has left me feeling disfigured with the haircut she gave me, and now that I'm home and trying to style this mess, I see that she couldn't even manage to trim my bangs straight, and the hair on one side is not symmetrical with the hair on the other side. With the mess she left me with, with my deformed ear exposed, I might just shave my head instead of putting up with this terrible thing she did to my head. I am so humiliated that I don't even want to be seen in public looking like this. I went in feeling good about myself and looking forward to the haircut I asked for, and I left with my self-esteem in the gutter. I get upset every time I catch my refection and see what she did to my appearance. I can't go out looking like this. In short, she was absolutely incompetent & unprofessional in providing a haircut according to the very simple instructions I gave her. She shouldn't be permitted to cut hair, and if she has a state license for cutting hair, it should be revoked. The only reason she's getting one star is because I can't give her zero stars. Attached to this review, you'll see two photos detailing how she couldn't even manage to cut my hair evenly. I could have gotten a better cut from a landscaper with a weed-whacker. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and no apology or refund can do undo the damage. I'll have to wear a hat until my hair covers my deformed ear again. Thanks to a stylist who doesn't listen, I get to wear a hat to cover my deformed ear now. As a craftsman and a business owner, I can tell you that this is not how a professional renders a service to a client. **Update** I spoke with the stylist on the phone a short time ago about the refund she told me she would give me, and instead of telling me when I could come down & get it, she began making all manner of excuses as to why she shouldn't refund my money. This is the kind of experience you can expect to have with this hair stylist: first she will ruin your hair, then she will justify her poor work and back-peddle out of any refund she's already offered you. I should have looked at the other 1-Star reviews of this place, because it seems that those people all had a very similar experience to mine. As a small business owner myself, I'm very enthusiastic about supporting small businesses, but not if they're run by incompetent, unprofessional people who refuse to accept accountability for the damage they do, or offer fair compensation in return for those damages.

The interior is bright and newly remodeled, giving it a modern and clean look. They offer many services such as haircut, perm, dye, and even hair treatments. There is even a dedicated person that washes your hair for you before and after your haircut. She is super gentle and thorough. She even massages your head while she washes it! I came in on a Monday around lunch time and they weren't busy at all. Since it was our first time there, we didn't have a stylist in mind. They sat us down quickly and David was the one that helped my husband with his haircut. He is very knowledgeable about Asian hair types as he trained in Tokyo for 6 years. If you show him a photo, he will be sure to match the style you requested through the photo. He will constantly show you what the back looks like through a mirror to ensure that you're satisfied with the results. David is really a perfectionist and he even told me that he's always open to criticism, so if you're unhappy with something, just communicate with him and he will be sure to make it right. There might be a language barrier if you don't speak Chinese but I think a translation app would work just fine. My husband got a Korean style two block haircut and I have to admit it's one of the best haircuts that he has ever gotten! The longer layers in the back blended seamlessly with the shorter portion on the back of his head. My husband is traumatized from getting haircuts because oftentimes you pay a lot for a haircut that you don't even end up liking, but he's glad that he finally found a spot that he will be returning to. For wash and haircut, the price is $28, but they were running a promotion at the time so it ended up costing $23. Overall, I highly recommend this hair salon to those who are looking to get a quality haircut.
