its a small BASEMENT masjid located between Gourmet Deli and Bluestocking Feminist Bookstore . It still offers children's saturday islamic school downstairs and the place serves all congregational prayers on location with EXCEPTION for Friday Jumah prayers which take place temporarily @ 4th Street bet. Ave B and C community center.
Its really a small but AMAZING little place, though the congregation and community dynamics has far far evolved and outgrown that small and limited basement capacity and they are desperately trying -within their own financial and cultural "confines"- to modernize and catch up to the other much more well established and financially sturdy mosques...most of which having larger second generation congregates of wealthy, professional, and educated member support.
Which is gonna be tough for these guys, considering that mostly all the attendees are of first generation average working class struggling backgrounds with the few & occasional artsies, hipsters, punks, and yuppie muslims frequenting this establishment. And thats what so unique about this little basement mosque that is also sooo representative of the changes and whatever is left of this rich and dynamic neighborhood: Everyone from muslim fruit cart drivers, muslim vendors, local independent muslim business owners, muslim cab drivers to the new local muslim high schoolers and the muslim nyu and visual arts college students as well as those occasional visitors mentioned earlier, temporarily all come together in this small cluttered space for their daily communal spiritual experience and then, at once, are back gain to their flow in making this neighborhood such a wonderful, amazing and really dynamic place. read more
