I'm not sure where my other photos went but wanted to post a little about this temple…read more This seems like a hub for a lot of the locals and elders in the neighborhood. The woman that's always at the counter, with a very outgoing personality, seems to know everyone that walks in there! The times that I've gone in, I've noticed different folks cleaning up, adding more incense sticks to the holders, fixing the fruit and flowers, sweeping the floor, adding a bottle of beer to the statue praying area, LOL. I'm not sure if they are official members, I don't get the sense that they were working on that day, more like passing by. But it's nice to see this communal effort and comfortable in the space. It's mostly a Cantonese speaking crowd, but I heard another dialect spoken on a recent visit. The woman at the counter probably has working knowledge in Mandarin too. I am not an expert, but when I go, it's usually for the Chinese New Year & my fortune, or to pay respects to elders that have passed. Every little slot that you see at each offering area - that's where you make donation. At the front of the area, there is a table top pedestal filled with a little slips of yellow paper, individually bundled by a rubber band. Donate $1 and pick a fortune. The next 2 tables have candle flames, bundles of incense sticks. Take 3 incense and light them, take them & bow 3x's at the 3rd table & stick them into the pot of sand. At the back there's padded low benches for you to kneel, bow 3 times, and pay respect. Another slot under the statue to make a donation, which may benefit your future. There's containers of Guan Yin Sticks. You can take one and kneel back down in front of the statue. Gently shake it, hold with both hands, hold it at an angle and shake with a gentle chopping motion. A stick should fall out. You want 3 sticks to fall out individually, write down the number in the order that they fell out. That's your Guan Yin Lot, look up your fortune according to those numbers. If relates to your health, wealth, big transactions, relationships, energy (more or less), ability to make large decisions. The front part of the temple has a lot of boxes of souvenirs & gifts to dig through. Lots of bracelets, which are prettier than the tourist shops on Mott St. Cash Only! There's boxes of free books and the front windows are filled with different little statues, objects, and bodhisattva statues. I can't say that I am an expert, but this is the way I've experienced the temple. The last time that I went, the lady at the counter was talking really loudly with some folks, it was actually a little distracting while I was in the back. Overall, this is the temple in the area that I'm familiar with, and choose to go to.

The way Daoism or Taoism works is everything lives in harmony and balance. You know the Ying Yang symbol? That is part of Daoism, from what I understand. That things exist in harmony, man and woman, earth and water, your back with your front. Yin and yang are always opposite and equal qualities. When one reaches its peak, it will without fail begin to transform into the opposite: for example, when a seed is planted in the spring, it reaches its bloom in the summer (yang) and then produce more seeds and die in winter (yin). This is an endless cycle and it happens again and again. The way I see it, yin and yang means the opposites to me. In our world yin and yang exist together as parts of a mutual whole. This is Taoism to me, I think. So taking the stuff above.....if I write review that is good, the gods is going to smile at me...if I write a bad review.....I might as well say bye to everyone now! 5 stars for peace and harmony in my world!

She'll be living in NYC for the next month while training for an abroad program for her senior year of high school, and her biggest concern about being away from home was leaving behind her Christian friends, church, and faith community. From the moment we walked in, Dionna made us feel so welcome and introduced us to Pastor Carrie. The worship, music, and message were wonderful, but what happened afterward meant the most. Dionna gave my daughter a card with her personal number and told her to reach out if she needed anything while in NYC. Pastor Carrie then introduced her to three local college students who regularly attend Liberty. They exchanged contact information, and she'll now have people to connect with and attend church with while she's here. It's amazing how God works. In one visit, He provided exactly what my daughter was worried she would be missing..Christian friends, a church, and a community. As a mom leaving her daughter in NYC, I can't express how much that meant to me. Liberty Church didn't just make us feel welcome for a Sunday; they made sure my daughter would feel welcomed and supported after I left. We are so grateful and absolutely recommend Liberty Church NYC!

Trinity Church 89 Broadway…read moreNew York, NY 10006 Located in the heart of the financial district is the oldest Episcopal congregation in New York City. Prior to entering the church, all visitors are subject to a mandatory security screening. Everyone is required to empty their pockets and walk through a metal detector. If you brought any size bag, it must be examined on an X-ray conveyor belt. The security protocol is taken very seriously; multiple guards are present during the insertion. The interior has a variety of beautiful sights to admire. A diagonal shaped peppercorn plaque is engraved on the floor beside the security station. It is the very spot where Queen II stood when she visited the church in 1976. In addition to celebrating the country's bi-centennial anniversary, the Queen was collecting back rent that was paid in peppercorns. Located at the nave of the church, the stained glass is very colorful and stands at a whopping 27 feet high and 11 feet wide. The grand piano has more than 88 keys. Everyone may have a seat on any of the cathedral benches to rest, pray or seek a quiet escape from the urban life.   Feel free to light a candle at the votive candle station, which signifies that a prayer to God continues even after exiting the building. The North & South Graveyard are located outside the church. Upon exiting to explore the graveyard, nobody is allowed to return inside unless they go through another security screening.   Historical figures are buried in this graveyard such as Robert Fulton, Alexander Hamilton, and John Watts. Several of the tombstones are several hundred years old, which accounts for their decrepit state.   In addition to tombstones, there are other sights to see. Detailed carvings of biblical figures are sculpted on the Astor Cross. The Soldiers Monument honors the POWs who died during the American Revolution. The Swords Memorial Fountain was a public water system that served as a community water fountain and horse trough during the 1900s. If you wish to receive a more detailed guided tour, scan the QR code on a "Virtual Tour" sidewalk billboard. A few of the billboards are located within the graveyards. Whether or not you are religious, I highly recommend exploring this designated landmark in Lower Manhattan. When you do arrive, be ready for a thorough security screening. #trinitychurch #lowermanhattan #astorcross #swordsmemorialfountain #peppercornplaque

I'll never forget it: I was welcomed by an usher who gave me the kind of hug that said, "You're home now." No side-eyes, no judgment--just love, warmth, and a seat in a beautiful space where I could experience the service at my own pace (and catch my breath from walking through Times Square--because whew). The music? Absolutely incredible. The choir will have you praising, swaying, and maybe even forgetting you're wearing those new shoes that weren't made for dancing. It's joyful, powerful, and real--and you don't need to know the words to feel the Spirit. Services are held at 10 AM and 1 PM, so whether you're an early bird or the kind who needs that second cup of coffee (no judgment--I've been both), there's room for you. And yes--they even have discounted parking if you get your ticket stamped. Because even in New York, Jesus is still helping you save. From programs for children to ministries for adults, the church is full of life, love, and purpose. Everyone is treated with kindness and respect. It's a place where people grow, laugh, cry, heal--and worship together. So if you're looking for a church that feels like family, sounds like heaven, and welcomes you just as you are--come through. You just might leave with a full heart, a new friend, and a joyful song stuck in your head all week.
