ASC billing incorrectly filed the insurance paperwork and then tried to stick me with a bill that my insurance covers 100%, bragging that they have lots of experience failing to get insurance companies to pay. In spite of ASC objections and demands for me to pay out of pocket, I brought in an expert who unraveled their mess and filed an appeal, and the insurance company paid 100% of the bill. ASC billing was extremely incompetent and unacceptably rude towards me and my expert, who worked for free to get them paid. ASC billing didn't even bother to learn what they did wrong or how to fix their process to avoid this happening again. read more

Today I came in for a procedure and the Receptionist Laura (Same person that checked me in), rudely asked me to get off my phone, although I looked around and almost every person in the waiting room was on their phone. Only difference is I was the only black person and I was actually on a phone call, explaining the pick up instructions to my spouse and after my sister called. She said, "Excuse me maam, there are no phones allowed and the waiting room and it's signs everywhere that says this!" Which wasn't true. It was listed in 2 places and you could barely see it. The lady in front of me apologized because she was also on her phone. Laura apologized back and said, "No I'm talking to the lady behind you." At this point I felt like I was just being harassed and singled out or something. I said, "Why are you just now saying something? Also, you haven't said anything to anyone else." She just ignored me and started laughing and talking to her coworker, so I just ignored her and kept talking on my phone. She's really rude and if I wasn't feeling sick, she would have really gotten embarrassed in that office. read more

Wow! Super impressed with the level of care I received here. Everyone from the person at the front desk to the anesthesiologist was incredibly helpful. Every interaction with the various nurses put me at ease, which really helped with my anxiety around the surgery I was having. Everyone took the time to explain each step in the process, I especially appreciate the anesthesiologist checking in and explaining all the steps and what I may experience afterwards in terms of side effects. And of course, many thanks to my doc who took very good care of me! read more

I recently had a minor foot surgery there. Comparing surgery centers that I have experienced these folks have it together ! No worries.

The anesthesiologist and after care nurse were Awesome. Check in was time consuming. The Line was LONG and some People didn't understand how to use their automatic check in machine. Then when you finally get To the live person they either go to fast or Too slow. . Before surgery was Just OK but the nurse I had after surgery was awesome. As well as the anesthesiologist. She checked on me several times and I had No problem. The problem was with the equipment used for my surgery. If you require a drain tube I suggest you call and make sure they have them In stock My surgeon had to use one that was Too big and made My recovery hard to deal With. When I asked the surgery center why they were out of stock ( which is ridiculous) they blamed their manufacturer. My advice. Make sure they have their supplies in store k before scheduling with them read more

This place is out-and-out NUTS! Avoid it like the proverbial PLAGUE! Unless you have a valid standard of comparison, you might not comprehend the difference in procedure. Despite boasting some competent receptionists, nurses, and support staff, they turned an excruciatingly simple endoscopy procedure into a needlessly stressful NIGHTMARE once inside the operation room. After sticking in your mouth an extremely discomforting mouth-guard, made of rock-hard plastic, an unruly nurse obsessed with positioning your legs a certain way man-handles your lower extremities unduly, adding to your anxiety. Blessedly, their propofol anesthesia, yes, the selfsame singer, Michael Jackson, abused to his demise, kicked in quickly to render you fully unconscious to spare you any further unnecessary anxiety until you awaken some minutes later after the ordeal's over and done with. The sole saving grace was a compassionate young attendant, Kelly, attempting to keep the stressed-out patient calm and comfortable. This is NOT a major surgical procedure. Even at dreaded Kaiser, it was administered simply, painlessly, and stress-free; mild sedation was given, you remain fully conscious, sitting comfortably in an upright position throughout what's supposed to be a simple, straightforward procedure. That's not all: This controlling, liability-obsessed center, under the pretext of after-recovery concern, attempts to dictate your post-discharge movements all the way out the exit doors, trying to require each and every last discharged patent to sit in a wheelchair awaiting their ride home, driven by their supposed responsible adult. Lyft or Uber rides, they dictate, are prohibited. No reasonable provision is made for pedestrians who don't drive or even own a car. Excuse me, which dictatorial authority under which tyrannical regime does this center derive from? This paternalistic, controlling exit procedure borders on outright FALSE IMPRISONMENT. Whelp, as this center was compelled to learn in a salient teachable moment, this particular patient wasn't about to be falsely imprisoned by anybody and freely and independently moved post-discharge, and exited, wherever and however he pleased. Just like at Kaiser, incidentally, where following a simple endoscopy procedure, patients merely WALKED out of the exam room freely, independently, and of their own accord! If such is what you care to subject yourself to, have at it! read more

My son (23 mos) hard surgery today on his ears + adenoids and just had the best experience. The check in process was a little delayed and long but probably due to Covid restrictions. Once we got to the back everything was fast the staff was so kind and helpful. Especially since only 1 parent could come. Everyone helped me with my things and were so sweet to my very nervous 1 year old. One of the buses even pulled out her phone to put on coco Mellon. Our doctor and anesthesiologist were very informative and comforting. They gave my son a little cow before surgery. The recovery room nurse was so helpful and with us the entire time gave my son lots of snacks and made sure we were comfortable. She walked us all the way to our car and carried all my stuff so I could carry my son. It's a huge stress seeing ur kid in surgery but I felt so comfortable and taken care of. I had cataract surgery done here last week, December 2021. I was pretty nervous, but this place helped make everything as easy and pleasant as possible. I'm not too good with names, and was pretty nervous so I don't remember everyone's name and I don't want to leave anyone out, so I won't try. I even got a call the next day from one of the doctors asking how everything was going and if I had any questions. Plus, they sent a card in the mail a few days after wishing me a speedy recovery and reminding me to review the post-op instructions. Parking was great, although I got there at 6am, so I'm not sure if it fills up later. It was raining, but the lot was fully enclosed, with an elevator that went right into the building. The front office was pretty straight-forward and not that friendly, though not unfriendly. But once inside, everyone was very friendly and positive. I felt I was in good hands, and everything went well. A day later, off came the bandage, and I could see fine. By the next day, I could see about as well as before even without glasses for my other eye. After the operation, they used my phone on speakerphone to talk to my wife, and let her know what was going on and when and where to come pick me up. I think I'll feel less nervous about the other eye now. read more

If you are looking for PT satisfaction on a discharge this review isn't so great. I went to drop off and collect my friend after surgery. My friend went in at 11 and I was told she would be done by 5. I of course get here to collect her at 4:45pm so I am on time and don't hold up other patient pick ups. Not only do I not get a call after her surgery telling me how it went or how long they thought she would be in recovery, I had to call into them at 5:25 and 6:00pm checking to see if she was okay and if they needed any help explaining discharge instructions as she would be out of it. Not only am I still waiting at 6:08pm, the excuse I received was "I'm sorry but the phone keeps ringing" So.....if you are expecting fabulous communication, prompt or even in the ballpark discharge time, don't. Just make sure you have the ENTIRE day to wait after they tell you to be there. read more

Had an excellent experience for my surgery. I had surgery on Valentine's Day 2018. (What a day!) such great bed side care! I took awhile to wake up but they made sure I felt comfortable after surgery. I had a great time from being checked in, pre-op and post-op. A week later they sent me a card hoping I feel well. While my experience at the Surgery Center was great, they took FAR too long to send me a reimbursement check for out-of-pocket for which they had already been paid by my insurance company. So many times when I called to ask for my reimbursement, they give me the runaround, so many excuses, over a 3 month period. After I made a HUGE fuss, I received an email saying they put a check in the mail today, but no apology. They seemed mystified by my reaction to noting a dysfunctional billing unit. read more

I had a colonoscopy at Aspen Surgery Center on Thursday and had a fantastic experience! The day before, I got two calls - one from the pre-op nurse and another from the financial director, Kathy. Even though my PPO plan is in network with all of my non-mental health providers, I still appreciate that Kathy took the time to look up my plan benefits and let me know what my OOP costs were. I wish more healthcare facilities were this transparent. I verified benefits when I was a medical receptionist, and I can tell you many patients/families were grateful to know about their financial responsibilities ahead of time. When I called a few hours before my scheduled arrival with a question about the prep and to let them know I was running late due to my Uber driver getting lost, the staff was very reassuring which decreased my anxiety. Once Karen checked me in, i was taken back quickly and didn't have to wait long for different nurses and the anesthesiologist to talk to me before I went into the procedure room. Kris interviewed me about my health history and Pam inserted my IV. Both were careful in finding a good vein, and Pam gets major points for only poking me once. No small feat as I have small veins! Dr. B was my anesthesiologist who was reassuring and let me know per my request when I'd start to fall asleep as I like to have a sense of when this will happen. Also in the procedure room were Ashley (procedure RN), Marcos (tech), and my amazing GI doc, Dr. Zheng. Once I woke up, the nurses who took care of me were Colleen, Inga (sorry if I'm off with the spelling, as the anesthesia hadn't worn off yet), and Chris who gave me some much needed graham crackers and ginger ale. :-) This place is MUCH better than another surgery center I went to the week before as it is clean, more efficient, and has communicative staff. The doctor I work for prefers Aspen and now I understand why. Everyone who took care of me was amazing, and would 100% come back for any surgeries or endoscopic procedures I may need in the future. read more

A month prior to the procedure I requested a quote for the whole procedure. They never sent me a quote. Then an hour before my procedure I asked the person preparing my paperwork and calculating my copay, "is this all I'm going to have to pay for this procedure or am I going to receive more bills later?" She said "oh no. This is all you'll have to pay". So I paid $1000 for my procedure right there. Guess what. A month after the procedure I got another bill for $600. Then a few more weeks later, I got another bill for $160. Since they didn't give me a quote, I don't even know if there are more bills to come. This is unbelievable and unacceptable. read more

One of the two check-in staff members needs to be fired. She was rude to patients. Spoke so loudly that everyone in the office could get her complain about her coworkers. She lacked polish and customer service. Remember, people are coming in here a little stressed out. They are not buying headphones from BestBuy. As for the rest of the staff, they were great. Welcoming. Informative. Generally kind and wanting to help. If you have a procedure and need to come here, I believe you are in good hands after you get out of the patient check-in area. What did I learn today? You must have a family or friend pick you up post procedure. No Uber or Taxi. read more

Aspen Surgery Center is the best by far of the other 4 or 5 surgery centers in the East Bay I've been to over the last 20 plus years. The last time I went was for hernia repair less than two months ago and as in the past the care I received was exceptional. The reception area is well staffed, with fresh decor and plenty of room. Once led into the surgery center you're taken to a curtained off area with a bed to prepare for your procedure. Once you've undressed and gowned , a nurse will get you situated in the bed, check your vitals, prepare the intravenous line and then check to see if you need more blankets or another pillow before handing you a call button should a need arise. Between the nurses, a visit by the attending physician, and the anesthesiologist you feel incredibly looked over and attended to. In the 3-4 times I've been to Aspen I've yet to have any medical staff working with me be anything other than professional, friendly, and assuring. The nurses even laugh at my nervous jokes so big kudos to them. This last time upon waking from my hernia repair I was in intense pain from an unrelated back injury no doubt exacerbated from laying flat during the surgery. Even though I was still coming to and hadn't yet told them what I was experiencing I was apparently crying and moaning from the pain which the nurses had already been attempting to address with pain medication. When no relief came, they immediately phoned a physician on call so they could given me a stronger and more effective pain medication. All the while they were so kind and attentive, never underplaying or ignoring my pain. in the future should I require any day surgery or routine procedures the first question I'll ask the specialist I'm referred to is do they have access to Aspen Surgery Center and if not, I'll find another specialist before going to another surgery center. read more

One nurse in particular that was talking to me about how her brother loved bad bunny LOL cause I was in my bad bunny shirt before and after surgery. this place is amazing! There seems to be a disconnect between the people that call you for a preop review and the people at the center it self. When I was called prior to my procedure, I asked if my wife, who was driving me home that day, could wait in the waiting room where you check in until I was ready to leave. I explained she was dealing with a broken hip and is also on a portable oxygen concentrator. I was told that would be fine. After I was checked in the lady that came to take me back to preop/ recovery area, told me my wife, who was using her walker, wouldn't be able to wait in that waiting room that she had to go down the cold hallway where there were chairs to sit on. there wasn't any chairs open so instead of walking back down the cold hallway she had to sit on her walker for 3 hours until they called her to bring the car around. That person that walked me back was rude and would not even let me try to explain what the deal was with my handicapped wife. Besides that everything else with my visit went fine. read more

First while coming here for a procedure the anesthesiologist pokes me in the eye and when I awake (with a severe corneal abrasion) they all pretend not To know why I am in pain. Mind you I am not there for eye surgery. Had to be rushed to the eye doctor first thing for emergency treatment. They offered a half ass apology and admitted it later. Later still after the bill comes, they bill the wrong insurance company altogether and tell me it's my fault that they did so. The billing clerk is extremely rude and dismissive and literally will not allow me to get a sentence in without cutting me off. Won't go here ever again. read more

Having surgery is a pretty stressful event. This surgery center tried rescheduling my surgery 3-4 times the day before and day of my surgery. They also billed me $500 over and then had to refund me months later. From scheduling to surgery, it was a horrible experience. The doctor, Hongha Vu-James, also didn't explain the process and steps I needed to take after the surgery for billing. This surgery was in March and I'm still dealing with this center and the doctor. I had surgery at the Aspen Surgery Center in Walnut Creek. The medical assistant who led me back to the pre-op room asked when my last period was. I said, "I had a hysterectomy." She said,"Oooh" and looked away, which make me feel very uncomfortable and hurt. Don't they look at charts so they know who they are talking to and what they are doing? Post-op no nurses could be found ten minutes after coming out of anesthesia. I had to yell for help, which sent people scrambling. I was in excruciating pain and felt the care was less than adequate. It may have been better if the hospital asked about my experience and told me their corrective action plan. Overall, I give the place a D+. I paid a lot of money for the procedure, but staff and care were disappointing and lacking. I had a bad experience and fear any future procedures which could be done there. read more
