Haha I had about a 10 minute wait, in the waiting area, and a nice young woman( Emily) says my name and whisk me into a x-ray room to take x-rays of all my teeth, then she x-rayed a single tooth. Then I was taken to another room and about 10 minutes later the dentist came in and explained what he saw in my x-rays. Was so cool to have my own monitor and I could see him going over my teeth. Only thing I'd of liked was an introduction from him! He was very direct! I got questions answered. Liked the explanation of all that was happening. Dentist Dr. Michael Johnson, of Aspen Dental, Sevierville, Tennessee, Overcharged Me Twice; Worst Dental Outcome Of My Life -- Avoid This Office. I am 78. I have used two or three dozen dentists over a lifetime of moves around the country. In my personal opinion, Dr. Michael Johnson of Aspen Dental / GSM Dental PC, 1419 Parkway, Sevierville, is the most incompetent dentist I have ever used. He owns that office, and he treated me. Based on what happened to me, I would tell any new patient -- especially any other senior -- to avoid this practice, which I assume is some kind of franchise. On December 23, 2024, I signed his treatment plan. It showed a remaining balance of $0 after my payments of $2,676 and $1,245 applied by my dental plan, for a total of $3,921 for this work ($4,136 in listed fees minus a $215 coupon). At my insistence, they broke out every major charge before I said yes, including the root canal, hard-tissue tooth lengthening, core buildup, and crown. My dental plan's price for the tooth lengthening was already built into that quote. I paid $1,617 that day and $1,059 on December 30, 2024, when Dr. Johnson did the root canal, the tooth lengthening, and the crown-prep work on a front tooth. Then I had to come back for a separate visit after the crown was manufactured so he could seat it. On his own plan, the crown was listed at $1,437.While he was doing that work, and while I was in significant pain, he kept talking about money. He bragged about trips he takes and things he can buy. I have never had a dentist do that during a painful procedure. On January 6, 2025, at that return visit to seat the manufactured crown, the office charged my American Express another $1,059. I told the woman at checkout I had already paid that amount on December 30. No matter how much I complained, she required me to pay again before I could leave. She said she would look into it and get back to me. She did not. I had to dispute it myself. Later, they finally reversed the overcharge of $1,059. They later sent yet another bogus bill for $76 for the same tooth-lengthening work. I did not pay it. I disputed it because that procedure was already itemized on the original plan and fully covered under my dental plan in the treatment plan I approved. Their own paperwork made the arithmetic obvious. They had no excuse for trying to overcharge me again. The $76 was later reversed after I fought it. I am still pretty good with numbers. My concern is that other seniors who aren't as good with numbers might not notice similar overcharges. I have had nearly a dozen crowns. This is the first that cracked, and it cracked in less than a year. I have never had dental pain like the pain from Dr. Johnson's work. That pain lasted about 14 to 15 months. In 2026, my current dentist and a root-canal specialist found debris at the root, and a gum infection at the root of that root canal is so serious that I am now facing extraction and an implant quoted at about $4,000. If you see Dr. Michael Johnson at this office, get the plan in writing, keep every card receipt, and do not pay a second time until they pull up the first payment. I would get a second opinion before letting him do a root canal or a crown. I personally find this dental practice so egregious and so untrustworthy that I would not return under any circumstances - even for a free replacement of the cracked crown. I would never send my family to this Aspen Dental franchise. I have the receipts, the treatment plan, the statements, emails, etc. I intend to file a complaint with the Tennessee Board of Dentistry through the Department of Health Office of Investigations. I am also posting this account on Google, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, and various physician review sites to warn other citizens of Sevier County, Tennessee - and hopefully warn any of the many hundreds of thousands of visitors who visit Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the Smoky Mountains each year who might need some kind of emergency dental work. If you have time, ignore the AI-inspired, insipid, ingratiating cut-and-paste "customer support" responses, and read the multitude of other one-star and two-star reviews of this dental practice that, regrettably, reiterate the abysmal service experiences I had with this Aspen Dental franchise. My advice, avoid Aspen at all costs! Firstly Aspen seems to push the sales of the clear aligners and electric toothbrushes to all new patients. Feels a bit scammy, but maybe most people need it. I signed up for the clear aligners. I was diligent about wearing the aligners, however at the end of the period my teeth weren't at target. They set me up with another set of aligners (for free) and I continued several more months. My teeth were mostly aligned but my bite was worse off (I now had to chew on one side of my mouth). They were considering a third aligner treatment... During this time frame they had lost track of a minor cavity (you don't go in for cleanings when you're in the aligner program) and after a year plus, my cavity had progressed to the point that the tooth had to be extracted. To be fair, I had forgotten about the mention of the cavity as well with all the time in the aligners. The next issue is with their billing. They don't seem to be able to email or postal mail me bills. It is always a "surprise you owe us money if you want us to see you today" when you show up for an appointment. You have to request the itemized statement and they are usually as confused by the statement as I am. My aligner was supposed to be covered by half or more by my insurance but Aspen was unable to submit the claim to the insurance company correctly. I ended up paying most of it out of my pocket (close to $5k). I stopped going to them after they refused to fix their issue reporting the claim to my insurance for the remaining $600 balance. Since Aspen is incapable of sending me a bill, some work they did 11 months ago that was apparently not approved by my insurance is now turned over to collections. I had no idea of this bill. Aspen never notified me once about this bill. They have my address, phone number, and email on file. The staff is generally very friendly. The turnover seemed a little high. I had 3 dentists and 3 hygienists during the 2 years I was a customer. The bottom line is that they seem to be incapable of producing clear billing statements in a timely manner and are unable to file insurance claims properly. Be sure to get the exact amount you are responsible for in writing, keep careful track of what you are paying for and what they are billing you for, and get them to write down everything that is covered or not covered by your insurance. read more

As far as I'm concerned to much structure, X-rays, checking gums and depth of pockets. This structure makes sense for young and middle age clients. After 1.5 hr of going thru their procedures I never got to speak and show the Doctor suggestions I have to keep the costs within my budget. I had to take the bus so at exactly 1.5 hrs and still not having the doctor look in my mouth I had to leave. I'm confident for those with youth on their side the office is great, for myself I was disappointed. Everyone has different needs which Aspen dental might consider. They are no good. I have been a patient for over a year. I called to get teeth cleaning for the beginning of this year and told I could get one at this location. Waited a few months called back in June making an appointment for today 10/17. Got an email to confirm. Which I did. Even got a thank you for confirming message. Showed up to today and was told that it was canceled last week. I told them I didnt cancel to which the response was "well we dont cancel appointments unless someone (the patient) requests it. I repeated that I did not request canceleation. She again said the same thing. No apology or anything. I even mention in front of her that she wouldn't even offer an apology to which she just stared at us. Teach your employees costumer service! Don't ever go here! I brought two of my kids so far. One they forgot about us in their waiting room then in their rush to get us out screwed up my sons fillings. This was my first visit and only 1 doctor he was running around crazy trying to take care of patients. Wait time was long. I had to call back and ask questions was put on hold for 5:04 minutes. During this time it rang back to them twice and was immediately put back on hold with nobody stating I was going to have to continue to hold. I finally hung up and called back got Charlee she asked if I would hold and I said no she said you will have to I have a patient in front of me I said I was a patient also. She said I would still have to hold and she put me on hold. All I needed was a phone number it took her 33 seconds to give it to me. Just a crazy horrible place and I will not be going back. I have been using Aspen Dental in Sevierville for about 5 years now. The prices were a little lower than other Dentist I have seen in the past (I am on a fixed income) and they provided good service...until today. I noticed a lot of new employees in the office and after my cleaning, I was informed that I needed a deep cleaning, which was expensive and required 4 more visits (I could not afford this on my income). But then, they did something I have never had a dentist do to me in my life, they tried to Blackmail Me, by saying that if I did not pay and have the deep cleaning done...they would not be able to see me anymore. Zero stars to Sevierville Tn office....loved the dentist, but the staff has a lot to desired, def need training... needed adj and had to wait a week for appt. dentures have never fit properly...after appointment for adj.on a Friday, my lip was bleeding. Went to office on Monday to see if I could be worked in for appt.waited 4 hours, staff worked one in that came to office after me.. then a regular appt. was 30 mins late, but they couldn't use that time to see me. Had to leave to go to airport, It would have only taken 5 mins. to solve my problem. Against their instructions, I smoothed the sharp edge with a file...what was I to do...leave the country with my mouth bleeding? Just now called to get an appointment, can't see me for 3 or 4 weeks...I just had neck surgery and have a hard time swallowing, having to wear a neck brace for 6 weeks. I am so sick and disgusted with Aspen Dental.. they didn't have a hard time taking my money but can't seem to take care of their patients...seems to me that an office should have the means to take care of emergencies..I have suffered with my mouth for 3 months, wish I knew back then what I know now I would have stepped foot in that office. DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST. They called me to come in for my cleaning. I made an appointment for my cleaning, 30 minutes after my appointment time, they proceed to tell me that my insurance would not pay because it was less then 6 months. (my insurance pays twice a year for my cleaning regardless of when I go). So they told me I would need to come back. They went ahead and billed my insurance company anyways for a cleaning and x-rays I never had and my insurance company paid them. This was last July and I still haven't gotten the refund through my insurance, so therefore I cannot get another cleaning somewhere else. Also, other appointments I have had the dental hygentist always leaves after she starts my cleaning and I wait in there for 15-30 minutes for her to return. However, my mouth being swollen and extremely in pain I informed front desk that I will go to an urgent care Dr. for antibiotics and not wait another 12 hrs before getting in, respectfully. Never again! I made an appointment to see the dentist for December 4, 2018. I had $1,000 in dental benefits that needed to be used before the end of the year. My appointment was at 9 am and I had to be at work at 12. The receptionist told me the procedure would take approximately 2 hours. At 9;30 I was still waiting. I asked how long it would be and was told they were about to take me back. At 9:45 I was getting concerned that if I kept waiting I would end up being late for work. I saw Dr Johnson standing in the back of the office talking to a nurse and laughing. Again I asked how long it would be. They told me soon. So, realizing I would be late for work if the procedure took two hours, I asked to reschedule. The new appointment was for December 13. Today on December 11, they called me to tell me the doctor will be off and they need to reschedule me for after the new year. At that time I will lose this year's insurance benefits.
