To a person, everyone I encountered was friendly, professional and truly caring. Dr. Gart made sure to clearly explain the issues and the procedures she was recommending. At no point did she seemed rushed and once I understood she made time the next day for my procedure. Additionally, I really appreciated the support her assistant, Hannah, provided before and after the procedure. Several hours after I was back home, I received a follow up call to check on my progress and see if I had any questions. I cannot overstate how her professionalism and caring demeanor eased my anxiety. This is the first time I have ever felt the need to do a review after a dental appointment.

I was referred to Southeast Oral Surgery by my dentist upon needing an implant done. Though there…read morewere many positives to my experience, knowing what I know now I would have gone to a periodontist to have the surgery. The offices are all clean, staff was all great, I even felt very comfortable with the doctor as he seemed very knowledgeable, professional and confident that all would go well with my implant. He stated I had no issues that would cause concern about the implant being done. Everything seemed fine after surgery. Problems began to be realized when my dentist attempted to place the original crown onto my original implant. Long story short...it was problematic. My implant very soon after having the crown placed, became loose. I just let it go as I thought it was my crown that was wiggly, and that this was probably normal since I had never had an implant before. I eventually had mild discomfort when chewing on the side of my implant, so had a visit with my dentist to see what was going on. She referred me back to the oral surgeon and it ended up the implant had to be redone because of a buccal defect. It did not come to my knowledge until several months later that this can occur when an implant is improperly placed, which I strongly believe is what occured, and is what my dentists office hinted at although they never completely threw the oral surgeon under the bus. I am EXTREMELY grateful this office guarantees their work and redid the implant with no charge to me. That is how things should be done if work is done improperly. My issue comes from the fact that I had to pay for a new crown which ran close to an additional $1500 out of pocket BECAUSE the original implant failed. The 2nd implant was positioned differently than the first, so the original crown was no longer going to fit. We had already paid $1200 out of pocket for the original crown...a perfectly good one. The oral surgeon should have compensated for the replacement crown as well as the implant redo, which is I what I attempted to pursue. When I originally contacted the office manager about this she was automatically defensive and rude, arguing that in all the years of doing her current job she had never heard of a buccal defect before. We went back and forth and when she finally looked at the paper signed by the doctor confirming there was a buccal defect, she said she would look into it and speak with the oral surgeon about the issue. After probably a couple of months of waiting, the office manager contacted me for a follow up. She was much nicer in tone and told me that doctor would be calling to speak with me. Another several weeks passed and the doctor never called (interesting). The office manager finally reached out again and was very apologetic about doctor never calling me. She further explained that the buccal defect could have resulted from inadequate cleaning of the area and that they were not going to compensate me for the crown replacement, but I could get reimbursed by the manufacturer if its under warranty so I needed to follow up with my dentist. I asked her why the manufacturer would compensate me for a crown that had nothing wrong with it. I told her MANY times the crown had to be replaced because the IMPLANT was faulty, not because of the crown itself or anything the dentist did. Im not sure if she was just failing to understand that fact or just glossing over it so they did not have to admit any fault for a bad implant. Regarding the lack of cleaning the implant area, I am a flosser and use a water pick daily. In addition, the oral surgeons notes (which I was able to access from my dentist) stated NOTHING alluding to the infection and defect being due to poor oral hygiene, nor did he say ANYTHING to me about that being the cause of the issue before or after the implant was replaced. Bottom line, both the oral surgeon and the office refused to accept any responsibility for a surgery gone wrong. I know implants fail (though rarely), but sometimes those failed implants are a result of doctor error and not due to issues with the patients mouth. I understand my situation regarding billing patients is commonplace with most or all oral surgeons, which shows that things need to be fixed in our medical and dental systems. Had I known that many oral surgeons place implants "free hand" and that there are scans that can be done that many do not do to insure the implant is being placed properly, I would have made sure to do some more homework before taking my dentists referral to go to Southeast. IMO, if someone does you wrong and you take them to court, the PERPETRATOR is responsible for compensating the victim in the case. So should it be with medical and dental care.
