This place is wonderful for kids. There are so many things for them to do, run and play, however…read morethe young lady who works on Fridays for the open gym 9:30-11:00- she is INCREDIBLY RUDE, UNKIND, UNPROFESSIONAL and not a pleasant person, she has been this way several times when we have attended. Especially to be working in this capacity with children and the community, it's very unfortunate for Aspen. Because of her unkindness, it makes me not want to bring my children here to play. Very sad situation. However, Mrs. Heather who instructs the gymnastics times M-T, SHE IS INCREDIBLE! She is so wonderful with the children, parents, and EVERYONE! We LOVE HER!

I spent a week camping in the mountains outside of Aspen last week. The last time I was up there,…read morethe rec center on the far west side of town offered $6 showers to the public. They've since moved that service to the "red brick" facility in the middle of town, but they cut it off at 3:00 p.m. After I made a mad dash across the pass and down 82 to get there in time, I arrived at 3:06. I asked the elderly gentleman at the desk if I could just jump in and out really quickly, as I was only 6 minutes past the deadline. "Well, the rules are the rules". Please??? "You know, we've got other things going on..." Me looking around at the empty space. "Huh?" Lame. Unhelpful. Would not recommend.

Such a cool spot and definitely something you need to do if you are in Aspen! We went during spring…read moreoffseason, rented bikes from Velo E-bikes in Aspen (don't go anywhere else to rent but Velo - trust!!) and rode from Aspen all the way up to Maroon bells without a single hider or issue - even despite the misinformation we received from e-bike places we called around town. Highly recommend using e-bike versus manual bikes or walking there. In the summer they offer shuttle services to Maroon bells which would also make it easier to get there. I can imagine in the summer it's probably over saturated with people and busy. When we went it was beautiful, quiet, and serene. I wouldn't have wanted to be there any other time. The bike routes are well marked and we got to ride on the closed road all the way to the picnic area at the base of maroon bells. If you come to Aspen, you should absolutely factor this into your itinerary!

There was a hefty amount of elevation gain. There were plenty of streams to filter water from with several river crossings as well as sketchy snow crossings where we lost the trail. Navigation was a challenge at times as there was limited signage. Even in July, which is the most recommended month to hike, the weather was dicey with some heavy afternoon thunderstorms. You do have to reserve your permits online far in advance and book bus tickets from Aspen as park parking is very limited. WAG bags were recommended, but not required when we went.
