It is sort of embarrassing how much I actually like this chain, even though I know for a fact it is not very good. Although, in my defense, I finally got so tired of my mouth tingling for hours afterward that I stopped eating here. (I have an MSG allergy and they use that stuff very liberally.)
They sell German-ized Asian food, which is very similar, honestly, to American-ized Asian in that it is sweeter and creamier than the real deal. The main difference is that German Asian food is mainly Thai-influenced, rather than Chinese-inspired. So this place serves a lot of coconut milk based curries. They also have a number of duck dishes. And my favorite Asia Gourmet dish is the pumpkin curry with peanut sauce.
I'll say that their veggies actually always seem fresh and they do a nice job with plating and presentation. The meat is so-so, as might be expected.
Asia Gourmet's main flaw, aside from their fixation with MSG and lots of it, is that it is really too expensive for what it is. There are places in Berlin where you can get fresh, non-MSG'd, very tasty food for the same amount you would pay at Asia Gourmet. That said, A.G. is very convenient and relatively quick. They also have great hours.
It's not a place you would make a point of going to, but one day you are going to be at Potsdamerplatz and you're not going to have many Euros in your pocket and you are going to feel like eating something other than döner, and you will be glad it's there.
I feel like I should say this again: I have a *mild* MSG allergy and even that has kept me from coming here any more often than once in a very long while. If you have any kind of moderate or severe MSG allergy, avoid!!! This place is basically poison for you. read more
