From the moment we stepped onto the vintage-style trolley,  we were swept away by the warm, welcoming atmosphere and the infectious energy of our guide Daniel Ellis Daniel provided us with the perfect balance of fun and informative -- packed with fascinating stories about Richmond's rich history, from Civil War landmarks to modern revitalization projects. He is incredibly knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor, weaving in personal anecdotes, quirky facts, and local tips that you just wouldn't get anywhere else. What truly made the experience special was how interactive and engaging it felt. The trolley itself was spotless and super comfortable, with great views from every seat. We even got some time to hop off and explore a couple of key spots, which made it feel more like an immersive adventure than a typical tour. Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or just looking to see the city from a new perspective, RVA on Wheels delivers an unforgettable experience. I had the pleasure of being gifted a tour certificate from my co-workers who all know how much of a foodie I am. I finally found a good time to go when the weather was pretty mellow, and it was just perfect to walk around for the tour. I opted for the Churchill food tour, and shockingly had not tried many of the places on the tour, so was in for a treat. I wasn't expecting the history tour along with it, but that was nice to hear about Richmond's history while walking and site seeing. The tour guides are great and excited to be there and giving the tours, which also makes for a great experience. There were about five stops on the tour within two hours and it was a nice balance of walking, eating and taking breaks to learn. Some tours and stops even include alcohol, so that was a nice surprise. I've already bought another gift certificate to check out a different food tour. Highly recommend this experience to all, especially my foodies and history buffs!

Veterans of 13 voyages with Alaska Sea Adventures (ASA), if my husband and I could live on the boat we would! Immerse yourself in the vast Southeast Alaskan wilderness with anchorages in tranquil bays, the silence of the great outdoors broken only by sweet bird calls; observe humpback whales for hours without elbowing for position through crowds of tourists at the railing; enjoy an entire day exploring a glacier-carved fjord, finally arriving at the face of a magnificent tidewater glacier to view it for hours while the glacier rumbles and thunderously calves. Alaska Sea Adventures is tailor made for those who seek the soul of Southeast Alaska. Captain Dennis Rogers, owner and captain of ASA's beautiful yacht, Northern Song and his business partner & wife, Toni are terrific. Friendly and efficient, from the moment Toni greets arriving ASA passengers with a warm Alaska-sized hello, one feels part of the extended ASA family. Captain Rogers displays a deep respect for his home state as well as the wildlife he so proudly introduces to his guests. On all of our voyages Captain Rogers has exhibited the utmost in friendly courtesy toward his guests, doing all he can to grant passenger requests to assure them of a wonderful voyage. A great many of the people we have met on board Northern Song are frequent repeat guests, people with whom we have remained in touch with and sailed with often over the years. Cornerstones of a successful, well run business, repeat happy clients speak volumes about the excellent service, friendliness and hospitality exhibited by Captain Rogers and his crew. A beautiful yacht, the Northern Song offers four cabins that house a maximum of eight guests on board the boat. Three cabins offer comfortable bunk beds while the Master Suite has one bed. A huge plus is that each cabin is en suite (has a private bathroom and shower). One can charter the Northern Song for a family or group or participate in various other specialty voyages. Examples of these include weeklong pro-photographer-led photography workshops, fascinating whale research expeditions led by humpback whale biologists, Summer Focus on Whales voyages with humpback whale naturalists/biologists, late Fall pre-migration humpback whale-focused trips, and my personal favorite, fascinating Spring herring spawn trips. My husband and I have participated in each one of these specialty voyages multiple times. Each voyage offers unforgettable experiences that keep us wanting more. I appreciate a spotlessly clean ship. Captain Rogers carefully---no, make that lovingly---tends to his beautifully maintained ship. Throughout the state it is the custom in Alaska for one to remove their shoes when entering a home, B&B and often a lodge. This is also the custom on board the Northern Song. Tracking in salt from the deck or sand, pebbles and rain forest detritus ruins carpets. If one does not bring along suggested footwear, Captain Rogers thoughtfully provides comfortable shoes (ala Croc-type footgear) for use on deck and indoor spaces plus he also has a handy supply of knee high waterproof boots for guest use on skiff and shore excursions. Alaska Sea Adventures offers a quality wildlife adventure, spending long leisurely hours observing humpback whales, orcas, eagles, bears and other SE Alaskan animals. Captain Rogers always is considerate toward photographers on board, expertly positioning the Northern Song for best light and photographic angles. The Northern Song offers excellent diverse platforms from which to nab superb wildlife images of a lifetime. Guests can easily spread out; there is always plenty of room. On most voyages shore visits are arranged for beach combing or short nature walks. During summertime Focus on Whale trips a visit is scheduled to a salmon hatchery stream in a Native village to observe bald eagles and black bears fishing for salmon returning to spawn. It's just you, the salmon, the lush rain forest and the bears. Other activities may include viewing wildlife from the Northern Song's two skiffs or kayaking the waters of a quiet cove. Nights are spent anchored in the solitude of a quiet bay, often with towering snowcapped mountains visible nearby. Your only company will be bald eagles, Steller sea lions, harbor seals and sea otters. One is so close to the rainforest that one can smell the invigorating scent of spruce on shore mingling with the fresh clean salty tang of the sea. Meals on board the Northern Song are excellent with heavy emphasis on Alaskan fish and shellfish. It's a treat to dine on expertly grilled flavorful wild salmon, freshly harvested spot prawns and luscious buttery black cod. If you are searching for a memorable Southeast Alaska voyage, look no further than Alaska Sea Adventures for the experience of a lifetime.

Wow, wow, WOW! What a fascinating place! So much history!…read more My friend and I went for a ghost tour on a Saturday night. The woman who ran our tour is named Sarah and she is a direct descendant of one of the original families that lived there. Also assisting with the tour was a man named Kenny from a paranormal research group in Richmond. Kenny considers himself a sceptic. His organization (I can't remember the name), works to document data, analyze the data, and try to come up with a scientific reason for the "paranormal" incidents. Both Sarah and Kenny have LOADS of knowledge! They shared a lot of history and stories with our small group. They also provided K2 meters that detect energy fluctuations. The stories were absolutely fascinating, first-hand, and some very recent (including with Kenny the sceptic). While we were finishing our tour, we heard a loud thunk on the wooden floor of the landing where we were, as if it had been struck with a boot or solid-heeled shoe. Then the floor was vibrating in a progressing manner as if someone was walking across the floor. One of the light-up cat toy balls on the floor was lighting up like crazy and several of the K2 meters were lighting up. So how about that?! A tour WITH paranormal activity! What a fun experience! I cannot wait to go back!

I've walked a lot of battlefields, but Fredericksburg has a gravity all its own. Standing at the…read moreSunken Road, you can almost hear the roar of cannon from Marye's Heights and the futile cries of Union soldiers charging across open ground. This wasn't just another clash of armies -- it was one of the most lopsided assaults of the war, a grim December 1862 where bravery collided head-on with impossible odds. The Visitor Center does a fine job grounding you in the context: Burnside's plan to cross the Rappahannock, the delays with pontoon bridges, and how those hours gave Lee's men the time to dig in. The short film is worth it -- it sets the stage for why this battle became a symbol of both heroism and futility. Walking the field, I couldn't help but note how the terrain dictated the slaughter. The Union army had to charge over nearly half a mile of open plain, with no cover, directly into Confederate firepower. The stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights remains chilling in its simplicity -- a farmer's wall turned fortress. It's said that a single Confederate line repulsed wave after wave of bluecoats, and when you stand behind that wall, you understand how. The driving tour expands the picture. Slaughter Pen Farm, preserved by the American Battlefield Trust, gives you the only full Union attack route still intact. It's haunting to trace those footsteps -- knowing thousands never made it across. Other stops, like Lee's Hill, give you the vantage point the Confederate commander had, surveying the field with grim confidence. It's not all glory -- part of Fredericksburg's story is loss and futility. More Union soldiers fell here in a single day than in many entire campaigns. But it's also where Richard Kirkland, the "Angel of Marye's Heights," earned his legend by bringing water to dying Union soldiers, showing compassion amidst carnage. Yes, the modern world has pressed in -- houses and traffic surround pieces of the field -- but enough remains to feel the weight of what happened here. Preservation efforts have fought hard to keep key ground from disappearing, and walking it today is a testament to both the men who fought and those who saved the land. Tip for history buffs: * Start at the Visitor Center, watch the film, then walk the Sunken Road before driving the tour. * Read first-hand accounts (like Sgt. McCarter's memoirs) before going -- they'll bring the ground to life. * Go early in the morning or late afternoon for solitude -- the quiet amplifies the history.
