As an avid golfer - and reasonable hack - I'm always on the hunt for golfing deals that are value-for-money. After all, even community courses these days aren't the cheapest when it comes to playing 18 holes, and when you add in travel, lost balls, tees and that all-important stop at the 19th hole, well, let's just say I like to "play it save!" - every pun intended! I first had a hit at Ashgrove Golf Club a few years ago and was immediately impressed by the greens and fairways on this challenging, yet forgiving course. It's conveniently located off Waterworks Road and is really located in The Gap, so how it came to be known as Ashgrove Golf Club is anyone's guess. However, what's in a name at a golf course is something we care less about than being able to enjoy a swinging good time, and that's exactly what you'll find if you go. Visitors pay just $29 for 18 holes and score a motorised cart from Monday-Wednesday, or $27 without the cart. Weekend and holiday play is $32 (without a cart) and if you're lacking either clubs or shoes, don't worry - you can hire them from the club. The idyllic surrounds of the course, which is located only 8km from Brisbane's CBD, is located at the base of the Taylor Range and is covered by lush vegetation and tall trees that come into play on almost every hole. The course layout is easy enough for a pull cart, and once your play is over you can flip for bragging rights with a coldie at the Outlook Bistro while watching others tackle the 18th. read more
