Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm is the cutest little farm and restaurant! We were driving from…read moreLaunceston to Hobart and happened to spot a sign for it. The restaurant is cozy and charming, with a little fireplace adding to the atmosphere. We sat by the window and enjoyed a lovely view of the lake. After our meal, we took a short walk along the lake trail and peeked at the raspberry fields. October is not the season for raspberries, so none yet! The menu creatively incorporates raspberries into many dishes. I ordered their special, a pumpkin and spinach arancini served with a fresh salad. It came with two unique dips -- a strawberry chili and a cashew aioli. The combination may sound unusual, but it was absolutely scrumptious! Since my dish didn't have their famous raspberries, I ordered a raspberry latte instead. Not sweet at all and had a very faint taste of raspberry. Mostly tasted the syrup when I got to the bottom and even then, not too sweet at all. After our meal, we headed over to their mini gift shop where they sold raspberry jam, raspberry ice cream, chocolate dipped raspberries, and a ton of other goodies. We ordered the raspberry ice cream and it was delicious! Quite possibly one of the best meals I had in Tasmania. Highly, highly recommended!

I can't remember which friend posted or commented on Facebook about the launch of this place, but…read morethe photos were so gosh darn pretty that I Liked it without hesitation, somehow thinking that Sassafras was down the southern end of the state and somewhat within my grasp. It wasn't until I was on the Bass Highway just outside of Elizabeth Town that I realised how wrong I had been, as I screeched on the brakes (safely, mum) and veered just off the highway to pay a visit to the Conservatory. It's even more stunning in person than it is in photos. A beautiful white building, sided with enormous windows, invites the most magical afternoon sunlight into the space inside. A ridiculously high ceiling looms over shelves covered in delicious Tasmanian treats. An old grand piano sits in the corner of the room. Big rustic wooden tables just want you to touch them. I had a chance to chat with one of the lovely ladies behind the Conservatory's opening, and she told me how it had taken years for her and her mother to convince the man who first constructed the building to hand it over and let them transform it into something wonderful, and how he had already dropped in a couple of times within a month of opening for a cuppa. The Tasmanian Food & Wine Conservatory is an absolutely magical space for a pit stop. My coffee was tasty and the lunch menu, despite me arriving a bit late in the day to try it (the ladies actually stayed open past closing for us to finish our drinks), the lunch menu looked pretty tantalising. I'll be factoring in plenty of time next time I'm headed to Devonport or beyond for a stop in here!

At first this place was a surprise. How often do you see a fully decked-out vintage American-style…read morediner in a small Australian town? Over the years, and the many visits, the surprise has receded and been replaced by an unshakeable fondness. It's not groundbreaking, but it's good stuff. The wall-to-wall vintage memorabilia makes a good backdrop to burgers with fries and five star milkshakes - the burgers aren't exciting, but solidly good, and great value. I hear the waitstaff used to work in rollerskates... Maybe that's a local myth. Whatever. This place is cool.

I visited this diner twice on a recent visit to Tasmania. The first visit was good and would have…read moreresulted in a 4-4.5 rating. Good food, good service, cool environment, etc. But.....the second time I went the experience was extremely unsatisfactory. The major issue was, I believe, the staff - who were different each time. During the second visit I waited far too long for my drink - especially as other people were coming in after me, ordering, and receiving their orders before I got mine. I was eventually served the wrong beverage. When I said "that's fine I'll just drink this" the server said "no" and took the drink from the table before I could even blink - then replaced it with what I ordered. Problem is it was luke warm at best and looked like it had just been slapped together. Very disappointing. I was still waiting for my food however - again even though a lot of people were ordering and receiving their food well after I ordered mine. I asked the server about the status but received no answer. I eventually went to the counter and asked where my food was. The older lady behind the counter seemed to be inconvenienced by my request. She disappeared out the back and returned to say "yeah there's a problem with it - I'm just gonna give you a refund". I wasn't asked if I wanted anything else. No apology was offered. She just opened the till and tossed my money on the counter. Keep in mind up until this point I had been polite and had not complained. There was no reason for the rudeness, let alone the inability to serve what had been ordered. I took the money and just left. It was a very negative experience and a complete waste of at least 1/2 and hour. Again - the first visit, with different staff, was good and a recommended experience. The second visit though was horrid. Different staff (the primary was an older lady) that made it that way. My suggestion to the establishment would be to review who works there and make some changes. If your staff are as nice as the first visit you would be receiving a glowing review. But the staff at the second visit I feel may be doing damage to your reputation.
