From the owner: Yoga? In a trapeze?…read moreYES, it IS as fun as it sounds! What is the Yoga Trapeze®? The Yoga Trapeze is a fabric swing between two sets of handles of varying lengths. The Trapeze allows you to hang upside down in various ways, as well as enabling you to drop passively into deeper, more supported back bends, build strength in the posterior chain and grip, and go into deeper stretches than you might be able to on your own! What are the Benefits? Inversion Therapy~ This is the biggest benefit! Hanging upside down creates space between the vertebrae and provides natural traction for the spine. This is so important because, in our culture, many people spend far too much time seated and end up with back pain. The trapeze opens things up and relieves discomfort! Assisted Backbends~ Backbends are often uncomfortable or not accessible to many people. The support that the Trapeze offers allows you to come into these beautiful heart opening postures in a passive way. Core/Posterior chain/Grip strengthening~ Traditionally, the opportunity to practice any type of pulling motion in a mat based class is unlikely. The Trapeze requires a great deal of upper body and core strength to do even basic movements, such as getting in and out of the sling. Using the Trapeze, you can quickly and effectively strengthen the back body. The Trapeze can also be used for planks, crunches, rows and many other things to help strengthen your grip strength and your core.

If you're looking for an ultra chic, modern, pretentious studio... look elsewhere! This studio…read moregives you that warm fuzzy 'local community' vibe (they even sell local artist goods in the lobby if you're interested in a 'one of a kind' statement necklace)! The classes are offered in a beautiful brick building (wood floors, big windows) on what I would consider the 'Main Street' of Lafayette Square. Plenty of parking in front of the studio or nearby. You have to travel through a small alley to get to the door (which is quite romantic... you can smell incense burning as you approach the studio's entrance). All of the instructors are friendly, helpful, and set a good pace for class. A couple of my friends enjoyed their experience with the studio so much they decided to complete the 'teacher training'! It's been fun to attend classes they host now to see how much their practice has developed!

If you're even questioning if you should drop in to a class at Southtown Yoga, the answer is YES…read more Beginner or advanced, ST Yoga gives a full yoga workout that will not only stretch you and relax you, but you'll also feel the burn. This week I went to a hot yoga class with my husband and his niece (she's a regular here) and although I've done regular yoga, glow yoga, aerial yoga, and yoga on the rocks, I had never done hot yoga so I was game. And I also hadn't done any form of yoga in quite a few months so I was a little weary since it wasn't clear what the ideal experience level was. We signed up online which makes the process quicker since you don't have to fill out any paperwork when you arrive. As soon as we got there we jumped in line, paid for our class ($7 cash/$10 card), kicked our shoes off, and found a space. The class filled up quickly so I'm willing to bet, late arrivals won't get in... which isn't a bad thing. I absolutely loved the studio we were in. The windows look out to Park Ave, but they do have a screen that blocks the sun from beaming down on you (I mean you're already going to be hot enough... you don't need the extra help). I like the whole design of ST Yoga in general. They updated just enough to make it comfortable like the nice finished bathrooms and changing areas, but they left a lot of the original features in tact like the wood floors and the large pane windows. What I love the most is that you enter ST Yoga through the back which takes you through this cute bricked alleyway... it truly feels like a secret that you're being let in on. So hot yoga. It was fast paced and hot. It was clear that it was going to be hot-hot and not just luke warm as soon as we walked in. I didn't mind it, but you'd be crazy if you didn't bring a water bottle (or two) with you. There is no pressure to push your body past it's limits, but more so to listen to your body and know when you can challenge yourself. And any reservations I had about going to a class that could potentially be an advanced class were washed away when I realized any advanced moves instructions were accompanied by instructions for modifications. 100% recommend! This was a fantastic workout that was both challenging and meditative. All of the staff was helpful and welcoming. Oh and they start off their Om's with this little accordion type instrument (different than any studio I've been to, but everyone was on the same key so it sounded beautiful). ST Yoga is a great place for any level yogi and they offer a range of different classes along with some pop up events so you can really find your niche at this studio.

I love everything about this studio...the owner is fantastic, the instructors are varied but all are top-notch, the space is inviting and they have all of the props, their class schedule aligns well with my schedule, and they are less than 10 from my house. What's not to love about all of that?!?! The coolest thing about this studio is that all of their classes and instructors focus on helping students improve on their practice. There is always space in the class that allows students to personalize their practice or work on focus areas. There are also all kinds of events and pop-up classes that are included in membership - I'm pretty excited for the celestial flow class this weekend! Would I return: Yep, so much so that I bought a membership Would I recommend: YES - I LOVE THIS PLACE AND ALL IT STANDS FOR Service Dog Grade: N/A - have not yet tried this with Piper. Kelley is open to the idea but I'd need to work with Piper to make sure it didn't unexpectedly turn into dog yoga
