If, like me, you ever struggle to choose between about three sandwhich options then you may be liable to be frozen in cant-decide panic at the endless choices presented to you by Abu Bakar! Even the halva section appears to be never ending! They sell a wide selection of vegetables, a broad variety of juices, endless rows of pulses, spices, herbs, cakes, bread, jars of pickled items, huge sacks of rice and flour - possibly aimed at businesses but may be handy if you live in a big house, loads of condiments (including some very mysterious and tantalising items such as a pot of chololate and cherry something...spread?...whose ingredients list was in Polish only). Homeware-wise they have pots, pans, crockery and kitchen utensils. There is also a halal meat counter. As Susan mentions, Abu Bakar is aimed at the Aisian community, but for anyone like me with boringly British culinary habits it is a fascinating and exciting place of endless possibilities and obscure and intriguing ingredients.

The shop is clean and quite tidy although it is small and hard to get around. The staff seem quite helpfull although you can be waiting a while for service. In all seriousness though, this little fruit and veg shop is one of the nicest in Leeds. (Possibly excepting the one's in Hyde Park and Headingley!) Even so, it's silly to compare independent grocers as you go to them because they are local and better than a supermarket - I can't really imagine anyone travelling half an hour to buy their weekly veg! Something Fruity has loads in the way of choice, with their fruit always looking cared for and nicely picked, as opposed to the dumped produce often proffered by my local supermarket. Everything here seems to be plus 20% in size and value compared to the supermarket options too, which is really why one might purchase their pink lady apple here rather than at Sainsburys. They mightn't be as cheap as some of the smaller indie veg places I've perchanced, but again, we're not going to travel to those for our weekly shop so it's a bit of a moot point! At any rate, this delightfully fresh, vitamin filled shop of goodness is a winner - which makes you a winner for shopping there. You know it makes sense.

I like the way it smelt in here, very fresh and fruity. There was also a nice selection of groceries, tinned bits and chilled produced (milk and such like) but above the name, what really stuck out (something Fruity is really a good name don't you think) was the strange little flower-pot men made from logs who sit in a row at the windows edge. You can get a massive array of fruit and vegetables at a pretty good price and high quality.

This tesco store is quite deceptive from the outside it only looks small I often saw it and assumed…read moreit was a tesco extra or metro but it is not it is a full size tesco selling a huge selection of goods over two floors. I use Tesco more and more mow they are offering double tesco points and often nip into this store if I know they have a offer on. They have a fresh bakery section as well as selling cook chicken and of course you would expect in any major supermarket. They always seem to have plently of staff on the tills. I tend to head here on a sunday as the local bus service is greatly reduced it is a lot quiter.

Well, it's not that I mean to encourage the likes of a Tesco treading on the toes of the indie shop…read moreowners, but I needed a few bits and Tesco Metro happened to be the place in Horsforth to help me out. Having accidentally spent my entire Saturday shopping and browsing about town I realised that I needed to pop into Horsforth to grab some bits before it got too late. Happily enough Tesco sorted me out for everything I needed. Easy food, such as sausages and salad? Done. Porridge oats and raisins? Done. Veg to last the week? Done. There appears to be very little in this shop that they don't have. To be honest, there wasn't a thing I needed that they didn't have so it was a grand old visit. Of course, I did not find their prices any cheaper - if not a tad higher - than Somerfield and the like, but convenience is convenience, and that's what this was. The lady who served me was really quite sweet, and I could tell she was having a tough time dealing with a spate of customers and those hellish beastly 'self-serve' tills, so for that I was really pleased. If I can I will always prefer to go indie, but you have to give it to them, I couldn't have got my breakfast for this week any more easily than I did by nipping in here.
