The food is amazing, the horchata is delicious, the salsas are excellent, and the beans are great--but the best part of the tacos is the homemade flour tortillas. Sooooooo this is one of the most iconic and must stop places if for some reason you visit this hot spot (literally hot as hell) place called mexicali. My parents were born here so we grew up with these tacos. One thing "norteños" (Mexican ppl from northern Mexico) are known to eat are tacos with a flour tortilla. This is not what all of Mexico does ...it really truly is a northerner thing. Well the great thing about ocotlan is I remember when it was just a little stand and now it's a nice full restaurant that everyone hits up when they visit mexicali. It is legit open 24 hours so when we visit we go the MOMENT we arrive and probably 2, 3, or 4 more times before we leave. It's a must when we come. Oh you have dinner plans or a party to go to where they will feed you? Who cares!!! Go squeeze in a taco or two. Lol. That's what our siblings and I do all the time. I remember one time my mom wanted to go eat Chinese food at lucky (review on that soon also ) but my brothers, sister and I were like nah man we gotta go squeeze in a taco. So we went and squeezed. ..yeah mom found out, probably because we weren't hangry lol ...it was funny ..because we tried to keep it from her. Our smiles and overall satisfaction must have been obvious lol. Anyway they bring you whatever taco you want plainly and you have all the fixings on your table to add to make a masterpiece. It has bathrooms and you may also be there when they have a trio playing music. This place is NEVER empty... 11am ...2pm...6pm...11pm...2am ... it's always open and busy. Wow, we can finally review restaurants in Mexico! This is my first "Mexican" review, albeit in English. Stoked that I can review what I consider the B-E-S-T tacos in the city. Hands down, they are the tastiest out there, and I have been coming years to this taco shop since I was a kid in the 80's. I have been here at 3pm and 3am, and they always manage to come through for me. I have had the carne asada tacos, and the quesadillas con carne asada. They are juicy and tender, and they are cheap. The great thing about Ocotlán is that while you get your juicy, delicious tacos, you also get a slew of sides that makes the tacos great. I am not even sure how many sides you do get, but there is grilled jalapenos and onions, about five (5) salsas, lemons, carrots, guacamole and beans. Frijoles calientes....they are just amazing when you add them along with everything else on top of your taco. It's like heaven in a tortilla. You really can't get any better, everytime I am in town I'll be at Ocotlán. read more

This place was not half-bad! I had a taco de tripa and a taco de asada, both with flour tortillas. The tacos were bomb, for sure, but I was a bit disappointed with the lack of sauces and condiments when compared to Asadero Acatlan de Juarez, especially seeing that I had to ask for onions and cilantro. Nevertheless you have the essentials and the food is delicious. The restaurant is open 24 hours too, so if your hotel is not too far and you get a late night craving, you can walk or take a short drive down. read more

The worst taqueria in Mexicali, the worst customer service. I went there to have dinner and at soon as I get there I fall to the floor with an onion, the whole place floor was so dirty with pieces of meat , onions, beans you named. Not even one single person who worked there asked me if I was okay or nothing. Everyone just kept doing whatever they were doing. It was just unbelievable and embarrassing to me. I've been coming to this place for years, and it's my must-have when I am in the area. The Carne Asada is still the best. Lean, tender beef, nicely seasoned and I Love their roasted salsa. Wow best tacos I have ever had(PERIOD) If you are ever travelling down I8 in the imperial valley it is well worth the approximately 1 hour detour (depending on border crossing time) to this place just blocks south of the border. Just about as good as it gets! Its open 24 hours and busy all the time seems like. You walk in and seat yourself on any available table. First they bring you out an assortment of salsas and other fixings. Shortly after your waiter gets your drinks and takes your order. If you want some more which you will they will keep bringing you out more food. I've tried their tacos and quesadillas both were phenomenal. I've tried tacos all over Mexicali and none have even come close. The corn and flour tortillas are freshly made and the meat is always fresh because its so darn busy all the time. My last visit was around 10-11 pm and we had to wait a few minutes for a table. The place looks really clean and all the waiters look very clean and presentable as well. Its located on a corner and along a one way street which might make it a bit tricky to get there if you're not familiar with area especially at night but wow it is well worth it. Love this place! I used to come here 10+ years ago when it was an outdoors place and recently visited it again with my family. Now it's all indoors and air conditioned and tge have the same great tasting food. The service is great, the meat is well seasoned and cleaned of all fat, and the tortillas are freshly made. Mexicali is one of the border cities that has developed a respectable culinary personality. Great high dollar steak houses, real sushi restaurants, gourmet dining options on par with what you would expect in any economically vibrant city. That's great but doesn't apply to this excellent street taco venue that's all about the food without a shred of pretense. This is straight up high quality Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Chicken and various other offerings customary to this type of fare. The tortillas are super fresh, the tray of accompanying condiments are truly fantastic and the meats are well seasoned and grilled to perfection. I had 4 different tacos and all were delicious. The meats were not over cooked or spooned out of a warming tray filled with old stuff cooked hours before. So the meats are awesome, the tortillas fresh and the condiments make this a 5 star street taco place that has air conditioning and ample parking. Oh and did I mention its open all night. So if you are heading to or from San Diego and you brought your passport make the 30 minute detour to Mexicali and get some of the best tacos you will ever have. read more
