I came back to The Studio CL today and I got a beautiful, angled bob cut from Jeff Orris. He is very kind, easy to talk to and talented, he made my haircut look polished, evenly streamlined and angled and it really flatters my face and looks very pretty. He took his time cutting my hair dry, then shampooing and conditioning it, blowing it out and finishing the cut when dry and blown out. Jeff put some products in my hair that made it feel and smell great too. I definitely will come back to him for cuts and for either highlights or single process color. I think Jeff is a great stylist and I trust him. He does a great job, I feel so pretty with my new cut! Prices are within the norm for high end salons in the area and it's well worth it! read more

I went to Studio CL for hair extension removal and a trim. The reason I had hair extensions was because I wanted to hide a bad haircut I got on a whim while traveling abroad. By luck, I was assigned to Christi who did a great job trimming away any remnants of the bad cut. She actually taught me more about hair extensions than the stylist who initially put them in. The reason I am giving four instead of five stars is because the neck cushion at the hair washing station was hard and made my neck ache. When it comes down to it though Christi did a great job and I will definitely be back. read more

My hair was stolen at this salon. I went in with hair that I loved looking to clean it up. I explained to my stylist that the ends weren't as healthy as I wanted and we agreed on taking off about two inches (my hair was about 4-5 inches below my collarbone). Then, without me being able to see what he was doing, he cut 7 inches off of my hair. This was not a little bit more than we agreed - this was completely different. He started making comments about how I needed more of a look and asking if I had ever had "real" bangs. Yes, I've had bangs and my hair texture is best suited for long hair. He started cutting them anyway and suddenly I have 1-inch pieces of hair sticking straight off of the front of my head. I told him to stop and that I didn't want it to be short. There was no apology or really any interest in what I thought about my hair. We finish up and not only has he cut my hair several inches shorter than we agreed, he has "thinned it out" so that even the section that still reach my shoulders are thin and scraggly. I looked like a wet rat coming out of this place. You should have seen the look of horror on the receptionist's face when I left - it was that bad. It is by far the worst haircut I have ever had in my life. It is so thin that I barely have anything to work with. The bangs are the worst part because they are so short that they just stick straight out. It will be more than a year before I'm able to recover from this hack job. I feel completely violated. I don't write reviews, but seeing as nobody has recently mentioned Seiko (dunno why!?!?), I need to write this love letter now! haha SEIKO is the most beautiful asian girl who works here with the longest most gorgeous brown-blond hair you will ever see. She's super sweet. Hoping to have hair as pretty as hers, I scheduled an appointment to get myself an ombre hairdo today. I hadn't dyed my hair since 2005. I rarely ever change my hair color. I thought: who better to trust with such a drastic color change than someone with beautifully colored hair? Apparently she only focuses on color jobs and worked as a colorist in new york. I have black/dark brown asian hair and she kept my natural dark roots so i won't have to constantly maintain them. She graduated my hair lighter to the ends to an almost ash brown. I absolutely LOVE it. I love the color and how natural it looks. I showed her a few photos before we started of what I thought I wanted and she had some suggestions too. She painted the color on with a brush and a paddle thing, which seems to be called "balayage"? (i just googled this..) If you need a color change, please go see Seiko and you will not regret it :) I happily left my $20 tip. I feel like a million bucks! I got a wavy blow out by Matt. He was aggressively fast but I loved not having to wait in the chair forever just to blow out my hair after already sitting in a chair for a while getting my hair colored. And plus, he made me look great! The only thing that fell short today was my hair wash. The girl had a super light touch; couldn't feel anything really rubbed onto my scalp so it wasn't as satisfying. Oh well. Seiko's color more than made up for this!! I wentto Lauren today for a BIG change, big chop...she was great. I was late and she didn't seem to mind a bit, which was great. The last thing you want to do is piss off the person who is about to cut your hair. She spoke to me about what she thought would be best for my hair and my goals so confidently that I felt totally calm even though I was making a huge decision. She worked slowly, but not like, geez this chick is slow...more like, wow, she cares about what's she's doing and can tell this is important to me. I appreciated her concentration so much, not one hair was treated carelessly. We talked a bit but it was comfortable being quiet in her chair which was also cool because I'm not huge on the chit chat. When you have super damaged hair like mine and you go to a salon, you're always afraid of getting that disapproving tone because you cut or colored your own hair. She didn't do that (and trust me, I deserved it, I should not be allowed to buy color at CVS past 9 pm...actually box hair color should be locked up at night like alcohol on Sundays, that section should not be 24 hour!) and it made the experience SO nice. Alexey is a sweetheart who knows hair, and will do whatever it takes to give you look you desire. So far I've been to the Studio CL twice- the first time to get my hair cut, the second time for a gloss treatment. I've never had my hair cut with the dry method before, and it was a lot of fun to watch. It takes about a full hour- Alexey pays close attention to precision and detail. The gloss treatment is a new concept to me, but was recommended by Alexey. For $25, you can get a semi-permanent gloss treatment that lasts about two months. Erica was super in tuned with what I wanted for hair and was very attentive and made sure to ask all the right questions to get all the details on the look that I wanted. My hair came out fantastic! The cut was the perfect length and had beautiful and volumizing subtle layers. My balayage was a hit! Very subtle and elegant with beautiful browns, light and dark, and having my hair curled was just the cherry on top! I felt very stunning afterwards and couldn't help but smile all the way home. IF YOU ARE A GUY DON'T GET YOUR HAIR CUT BY MATT. I'm a pretty nice, tolerant guy. But in this case, I have to say something so that no other dude goes though what I just did. I'm new to the area so was looking for a decent spot to get a cut. I got in here in the same day, so that was nice. When I got there the place seemed fine. When I sat down with Matt, I asked for a simple cut - shorter on the sides than the top so I can part it to the side. Normal right? Nope. Matt proceeded to ATTACK my head with scissors. So hard that he actually CUT HIMSELF on the hand that was touching my hair. He kept going, discreetly wiping the blood from his finger onto his jeans. Sick. Not until I asked if his hand was ok did he excuse himself to put on a bandaid. When he came back he just kept just attacking. I guess I was just too polite (or Canadian) to just say PLEASE STOP. I became slightly fearful for my health when he had to steady his right hand hand with his left, while cutting my bangs and around my ears. He busted out those thinning shears to thin out my hair, and I couldn't help but notice that the scissors continued to gnaw at the the bandaid that was on his finger. It was bad. There was not a straight cut anywhere. Not to mention, there was no method to him cutting like there usually is with someone who cuts your hair. They usually start from front to back or side to side or something. This was just an all out, multi-pronged approach. Not sure he knew what he was doing. And the result is a hybrid side part with huge hair in the middle, short bangs, and a mullet in the back. No joke. So I paid as fast as I could, ran out of there, and called Hair on the Square to see if they could fit me in by the end of the day to fix this thing. They took pity and are letting me in soon. I'm just waiting and wanted to get this out while it was on my mind. Again, I'm not a bitter guy. In fact, I kinda think this story is funny. But if you're a guy and you go here, make sure to take your chances with a lady hair dresser, not a dude. read more

I went to see Seiko to get my hair dyed and she did a great job! She's the best colorist there. I hadn't dyed my hair in almost two years, so I went with the ombré. Loved it! It was a drastic, and at the same time, a subtle change when worn in up. The styling assistant was amazing. I don't remember her name, but she was a young girl with short hair and a full sleeve. She was really nice and did my blow dry. COOL THING ABOUT THIS PLACE - They do "dry cuts" like they dry your hair and then cut it. I've only ever gotten my hair cut while it was wet, but with a dry haircut, you can see exactly where the hair falls and how it looks. Everyone I came into contact with was nice to me and respectful. BUT... If I'm paying a minimum of $65 for a blow and cut, shouldn't the stylist be the one doing the work and not give the nice tattooed girl the hardest part? Don't get me wrong, she did an awesome job and talked to me the entire time, got me water, made sure I was comfortable, and was really polite, and the stylist (girl wearing a striped white and yellow shirt in 'photos') just cut my hair and barely spoke to me. The pricing seemed a bit much. I mean, I don't know how they determine the pricing, but I paid $220 for a cut and dye job - not including tips for the colorist, the girl who cut my hair and the stylist asst. - more than I've ever paid, but I figured that's the trade off when you go to a nice salon instead of Super Cuts. Overall, I'll definitely go back to see Seiko for another dye job. The girl that cut my hair didn't do anything extraordinary. She did make my hair feel not as heavy and layered it pretty well, but it wasn't anything special. And Hopefully the stylist assistants there are being recognized for their work. read more

Never would I think to write a review on my experience on anywhere until today. I got off the train in Center City where the weather was excruciatingly hot, muggy, and downright miserable. I felt like I was carrying a mop on my head of something that would not remotely resemble the look and feel of "healthy" hair. Today was Wednesday, "Hump Day," I thought to myself. But the day only dragged on longer. From the sixth floor of my barely air conditioned building, I looked out of the window and saw women walking the streets of Philly in hot and humid weather (in a more often than not wool suit). It's one thing to go to work in the tropics, but it's another to do it while wearing a suit and to look good! The cure for my terrible day? A wash, blow out, and cut at Studio CL. Never have I been to a salon for a haircut before. I've always had this fear of some stylist who would lop my entire head off, if not more! Call it trust issues, but hair is important, and for some, hard to grow out. I conquered my fear today when I climbed up the steps leading to Studio CL's salon. I didn't have an appointment. This was all just on whim. When I got there, I was taken care of immediately. Maddy cut my hair, and I must say...I THINK WE HAVE A WINNER! I felt like Anne Hathaway's character, Mia, from The Princess Diaries when Paola reveals the "new" Amelia Thermopolis Renaldi. Maddy did an excellent job! She removed the bulk of my hair without sacrificing length! She truly did give me my own haircut, not some cookie cutter style that some stylists pass off. This haircut frames my face perfectly. The best part? Maddy even took some time to tell me how to take care and style my hair. There was no rush when she was blowing drying my VERY thick Asian hair. Overall, the appointment took an hour and 15 minutes. With this kind of service, I'll definitely go back! Granted, the cut cost $65 for Maddy, but it was money well spent! You know what they say: a good haircut can make you look like a million bucks. I am so glad that I did! I highly recommend Artur, who I scheduled to cut my hair. After moving to a different neighborhood I tried a few different salons, hoping to find a suitable replacement to The Beehive in Fairmount where I'd been going for years. Needless to say, I couldn't find one I was happy with, so when I learned my stylist from Beehive, Vanessa, had moved to Studio CL, I had to go. I highly recommend going to Vanessa whether you need a good cut, color or both. She has a great way of seeing the cut that will work both for your face and the type of hair you have. Any time I have gone to her I get compliments for at least a month afterward. What's more, I'm at the salon for a good 3-4 hours, so I don't want someone who makes boring small talk. With Vanessa you get great snarky, smart conversation to go along with an awesome hair-did. The only thing that keeps this from 5 stars is that the salon has a bit of a strange layout and the bathroom was an ice box. That being said, there's nothing going against CL overall. Everyone there was very nice, the guy at check out actually seemed to care whether I was happy with my hair and Vanessa in particular does an excellent job. read more

Easy to talk with and bounce ideas off of, Sydni always gives me the exact cut and color I'm looking for. Even when dyes mix a bit unpredictably, the final result is always so amazing that I'd swear she'd planned it that way from the start. On top of that, the rest of the staff is super friendly and attentive, the salon is beautifully decorated, and the atmosphere is much more cozy and intimate than I'd expect from a high-brow Rittenhouse location. I stopped in The Studio CL for the first time today and had my hair cut by Zaneta. I don't know much about men's haircuts but Zaneta was able to educate me while giving me the perfect haircut. She did a great job thinning out my cowlicks. I really liked that they washed your hair before and after being cut and even give you a mini scalp massage. Tonya is my hero. Seriously. I moved here two years ago and haven't been able to find anyone to do my hair well. Most places I've gone, they expect me to tell them what my hair should look like. Come on people - I'm a girl but I'm no good at this stuff. I need an expert to help me out and tell me what will look good on me and then be able to execute it. I got referred to Tonya at Studio CL by a friend (who's hair is always fabulous). My experience was nothing short of a miracle. The staff all treated me well and were fun and engaging. Tonya consulted with me and I gave her what bare-bones description of what I thought I wanted and she took that and expanded on it. Was so kind and thoughtful, then proceeded to give me the best haircut of my life. I have never gotten more compliments. It's easy to maintain. I love it. I lived in Philadelphia for 2 years, and only discovered Studio CL after 6 months - I never went anywhere else after that. On my first visit I was randomly assigned to Jessica for a haircut, and stayed with her until I moved away. Jess happily answered my questions and listened to my opinions, and she wasn't afraid to tell me (very nicely) if my ideas would not look good. She did a careful and thorough job every single time, and I always got a lot of compliments on my cut and bangs. She is also very pleasant to talk to. As for scheduling - it is very easy to make an appointment over the phone. I've always managed to get an appointment on days and times that work for me. The facilities are well-maintained and clean, and it's in a great location on 19th and Walnut (landmark: La Colombe). It's up a rather narrow flight of stairs, but the space is bright and airy. I have to admit, I planned to review Studio CL and Jess only AFTER I moved away so I could keep them for myself! I will really miss them. read more

I wish I could give Studio CL more than 5 stars. They do an incredible job. I was fortunate enough to have a friend recommend me and quickly became obsessed. Everything about this place is great. I love that it is a teaching school as well as a trendy salon. I love that is is not your typical salon where you sit in uncomfortable chairs, surrounded by the same looking mirrors and set ups and feel as though you are going through a routine. The studio is super cute inside and different from any other place I have been. I have Jess cut my hair and she is a saint!! She is super cute, friendly, and literally has cut my hair exactly how I envision everytime. I have had my hair very long for years, and have always been scared to cut it. Jess cut about 5 inches off my hair and I absolutely loved it. The dry cut method is unique as well and I don't think I will ever want to have my cut again any other way. I love that you can see the results instantly and not be shocked when the blow dry is complete. Not to mention they are extremely inexpensive considering the location and what else is around. I am shocked to have such amazing results at such an affordable price when I have tried other places, paid way more, and been extremely disappointed. read more

I walked in without an appointment and they couldn't have been nicer. Initially, they asked me to wait 15 minutes, which would have been fine. A few minutes later they had someone ready to take care of me. Jessica was INCREDIBLE! She was so nice and listened to exactly what I wanted and made it happen. I felt so comfortable with her right from the start. I even let her do a single process color on my hair. I'm one of those girls that hates getting her hair cut so I was hesitant to go somewhere new. I called and made the appointment and the girl on the phone assured me that Matt was very good and I had nothing to worry about. The salon is easy to find but the space is small. Matt was very quiet which is not what I expected but once his hands touched my hair and he started work his quiet was actually reassuring because I felt like he was laser focused. Wash, Dry, Cut is the order and it is the way to go! This is BEST haircut I have ever had and I know it is because of Matts skill and the fact that it was cut dry. I've been going to him for about 3 years now. He is BY FAR the best in Philadelphia - possibly the best waxer I've ever had - and I've had alot of eyebrow waxers. Micheal also has a great personality, and is fun to talk to. Additionally, he is always so accommodating, and his prices are reasonable for the quality of service. Go here - if for nothing else, him. I woke up one Saturday with a terrible urge to chop a good chunk of hair. I pulled at my disgustingly long hair literally dying to be rid of it. I called Salon Thalia to see if by miracle my regular Travis would be available for a last minute...of course not! He is great, fun and lovely by the way...So, after checking out Yelp, I called here and one other salon to see if they could squeeze me in because it seemed that all the staff were generally great...I was able to get in here but at the last minute they had to change my stylist to Matt. He came and asked what I wanted, and while I explained I literally got no reaction, so I explained it over and over a few times just to make sure as that was a little worrisome. I wanted about six to seven inches off, VERY obvious layers,v-shaped down the back, and side sweeping long bang...this guys works FAST, super intense, says almost nothing, he stopped to ask once if I was ok because my hair was obviously a lot shorter, i squeaked out a "yes". At about 75% through I already could tell I was going to love it, and I did, and I still do!! It's growing out perfectly, the style still perfectly evident. I intended it for while my hair is straight, but I have curly hair and it looks awesome even when curly. So my point? I found this salon on Yelp and decided to give it a shot after reading the reviews. I had a horrific experience at another salon in center city and after waiting for my hair to grow a bit I decided the time had come to attempt to fix the attrocious job the previous salon had done. After wandering around a bit, I finally found the salon (it is up stairs, above a neighboring restaurant)...I was happy the minute I walked in. The girl at the front desk was friendly, accommodating and quick to get my experience started. My colorist/stylist was named Matt and he was amazing; he was easy to talk to and he took his time to listen to the ideas I had. That being said- this guy gave me the BEST cut and color I've ever had. Hands down. The highlights look completely natural and are super subtle and the hair cut...this guy deserves an award. I came into the salon with the remnants of the worst hair cut I've ever received and I left with a style that felt light, trendy and borderline perfect. He transformed my hair completely without cutting a lot off and the way he cut it makes it simply fall into place with very little effort. Long story short- Matt is amazing at his skill and I will absolutely be returning next time I need a hair appointment. Very, very happy customer. read more

I have been going to Studio CL for about two years now and love it. I go between Artur and Sidney depending on who is available (I always have to schedule last minutes) and love them both. Anymore, Sidney is the one who does my color as she knows my history best at this point. I first came to the salon after trying a different salon when I first moved here. I had a terrible experience at the first salon and Artur fixed it for me. It was a deja vu moment when I recently moved out to the 'burbs and tried a different salon so I could avoid coming into the city. Big mistake! I came back to have Sidney fix my hair and she squeezed me in and did a fantastic job (it will take a couple of visits until I actually like my hair again, but it is wayyyy better). I will gladly make the trek to the city and pay for parking etc. to have Studio CL do my hair. Also Skin Palette out of the studio is great for spray tans!! read more

Great first time experience. Was looking for a new place and it just proves that Yelp works! Will be back again.
