It's that time of year again - annual retreat for work!…read more Last year was our inaugural retreat and as 2024 Retreat Planner I created an immersive arts n crafts Afro futurist healing experience. I was really amped that our ED continued that tactile, creative vibe this year by booking us some time at the pottery. The last time I sat at a potters wheel was in 8th grade and my mom STILL has the flower pot cum remote control holder 32 years later. I was psyched to get back to it. Here's the rundown: A LOT is possible in a little over an hour. Our instructor Karen was phenomenal. A former teacher, she had a real knack for instruction and worked well with our group of adult learners. So much so that she glossed over our 12 yr old giggles about the ahem "shapes" all of the pottery wheel clay starts as. IYKYK. And if you don't, you'll find out. We had the opportunity to make 2 pieces: one from the wheel and another from the table. Once the pieces are done and colors selected, Karen will fire in the kiln for pickup at a later date. The space is gorgeous - yall know how I pine for my college days in New England. Close your eyes and it's like you're in the verdant forests of Vermont. The space is clean and well-lit with enough room to move around. It's easy to lose childlike wonder and fearlessness as we age. I love places where adults can explore, make mistakes, and fall in love with a new craft or hobby. And Karen has a wonderful way of making you feel confident, artistic, and determined as you learn something new. I definitely see myself coming back here alone or with friends. I can't say enough wonderful things about this experience!

My first time at Above Art Studios was super fun! I went for a SOLD OUT Trap and Paint birthday…read morecelebration on a Friday. The start time was 9pm but we started painting around 10:30ish so you have wiggle time to be late since parking isn't the greatest. If you want to pay for the parking garage you can, there's one located not too far from the studio. If you are looking for street parking there are spaces, if available, in front of the studio. Since it was after parking meter hours it was free to park. This paint and sip was Cardi B themed which I LOVED. They provided cups and wine openers for us since they know most of us forget that anyways. If you're celebrating a birthday they'll provide you with a separate table to put your cake, food, decorations, etc. There's a coat rack in the front which is good since the seat area isn't too spacious. You're going to be a little cramped but once you start painting, the drinks are flowing and the music is playing you're going to get to know your neighbours really well! Above Art Studios is a black-owned business and the owners are talented, helpful and passionate about this place they genuinely want you to have a great experience which I did have! Not only is the venue amazing to paint in, it also has a gallery in which you can purchase art and mini prints. You feel inspired walking around looking at the different art pieces. I will definitely come back to this location! Thank you for an amazing night!

This area seems to be building back up and I really hope it is!! There is so much opportunity here for a place that is great for day trips. The event I attended this past time was a Mommy and Me painting event. I took my 6 year old and we had a good time. The instructions were easy enough for him to follow and there was a basic outline that helped us paint in the right areas. After painting the kids were able to stuff their own penguin plushie which they really enjoyed! As we finished up the plushies, the cotton candy machine came out which all the kids were super excited about. The cotton candy was bigger than their heads and everyone got a real kick out of it. It was a really well executed event and we had a lot of fun. It was a nice way of getting out and avoiding screens on his day off from school.

The only issue was that it didn't seem as though enough time was given for 9/10 year olds to successfully complete the task within 2 hours... that also included pizza and birthday cake time... and you know, just having fun! I believe some of the children's attention span wandered... and it was absolutely freezing in there... that didn't help the overall experience on a very cold, raw, rainy January day. Some pros were that there was plenty of parking in front on a Sunday. The assistant, Adrianna, was a very pleasant, helpful gem.. and the blankets (those that were finished) came out really cute and soft. Great idea, a little rusty in the execution.

The second floor is a bit more expansive, but $7 feels like you should spend more than 15 minutes tops. I was examining the wooden structure, the bends and repairs. We went up the 4th floor stairs to see what was up there (appears to be where you take school kids for a field trip) just to prolong our stay. Ultimately, while I prefer this to the tourist-trap Red Mill across the bridge, honestly, the bridge is my favorite museum in town. I'd skip this next time.

I've stopped in a number of times, usually after I grab a coffee next door and take a peak around. The shop is a mix of works by several different students and even the owner. I am actually currently drinking my tea out of a mug I got here that I believe was made by the owner herself! It was a splurge gift to myself that I don't regret at all. On that trip I also picked up a beautiful bowl for my mom. It had a swirly almost scallopy rim and such a gorgeous blue glaze. And it was so affordable! This is why I pop in so frequently, there is always something new to admire or maybe even take home. Happy to have them in town to stop into and find incredible, handmade, unique pieces! And maybe eventually I will try my hand at another wheel class one day as well.
