I was searching online for a good beginner sloop and fell in live with the Catalina 22. I came across this company's website in my search and saw that they had 4 or 5 ranging from $2500-$5800, which was perfect for my budget. The one I was most interested in had 87 pictures posted online with about every view imaginable (before cleanup and after). Since the lot was 60 miles from me, I was glad to get such a comprehensive look at the boat before making the trip. I emailed them and received a response the same day from Tiffany. We made a trip out there to walk around and look around. We got eaten alive by Mosquitos because of all the recent rain and all the cockpits that had standing water in them. Welcome to Georgia! Didn't make any decisions that day but got a good feel for what was available. A few days later, I noticed the price was reduced. I talked to Shane who told me they were going to pave the lot and wanted to clear some of the inventory. The price was perfect for the condition of the boat now. We put a 2% deposit down over the phone and made another trip out a few days later. On our second trip we came a bit more prepared with umbrellas, bug repellant and a pickup truck to tow. I spent hours looking at the photos and already knew the condition of the boat. Took a quick look around when we got there to make sure the hatches and pop top worked correctly, found the rudder down below and inspected the trailer to make sure she was ready for the highway. She was dirty, so we wiped her down in spots to see how stubborn the dirt would be and could see she was still a beauty underneath a light film. Brian (I think) even helped us make sure the mast was lashed well for transport and helped us hook her up to the truck. There were no surprises in check out, no sneaky fees, and everything about the boat matched the detailed online description. Off we went! When we got her to dry storage we did find a couple surprises though. We found out she had not only her mainsail and jib, but a genoa, a spinnaker and a wind scoop. Extra bonus! We also discover the trailer lights are fairly new and we got the extendable trailer which makes it easier to launch since she needs a lot of water to come off the trailer with a solid cast iron swing keel under her. The only disappointment we found was that her boom was missing, but we didn't feel this was the seller's fault since they gave us all the time we wanted to crawl around and check everything. They even held umbrellas over our heads as we climbed around and inspected. I'm new to sailing and just didn't notice it wasn't there in the mix of all the stuff stored down below. I've already located a couple used booms from parted out Catalina 22's or I can buy a brand new one for $350. Just not that big a deal for me. All in all, I would absolutely recommend Lanier Marine to someone looking for a project boat, or light work restoration. If you're new to boats, bring a marine surveyor or experienced boater with you to inspect the boat thoroughly. If your looking for a brand new shiny boat, though, this isn't the place for you. I think with the nearly ready to sail condition (minor work needed), extendable trailer, and extra sails, I got a fantastic deal based on similar condition and age of the same model I've seen from the Catalina 22 National Association. If I'm ever looking for another project after this one, I'll probably look here first. Note: I have 4 stars rather than 5 because of the gravel lot, which they intend to pave soon, and the Mosquitos. Our first trip there ended quickly once we hit our tolerance for mosquito bites. But bring a can of Off and you'll be fine.

This is not even a junk yard....this is a dumping ground for old boats. Nasty place, that is an EPA nightmare. Cannot believe the county hasn't shut this place down.

Aqua Sports Adventures - Enjoying the day on a pontoon with our doggie

We went out on Lake Lanier on a 24-foot pontoon rented from Aqua Sports Adventures in Buford. We…read morehad a good time, but my experience wasn't as fun as my previous boat outings on Lake Lanier and Lake Allatoona. We originally wanted to rent a boat with an upper deck, slide, wet bar, and toilet (like the boats I've gone out on in the past from different boat rental companies), but Aqua Sports Adventures didn't have any so we were "stuck" with a 24-foot pontoon. This pontoon had a max capacity of 14 passengers. We used the entire 14-person allotment and after fuel, fees, taxes, and gratuity, our total per person cost to rent the boat all day (9am-5pm) was $34. It wasn't a bad price, but it wasn't as good of a deal as other bigger and better boats I've rented from businesses like Port Royale in Gainesville ($25: https://www.yelp.com/biz/port-royale-gainesville-3?hrid=p9tlB4H5UfFBNDjPXg0AtA) and Paradise Rental Boats in Acworth ($32: https://www.yelp.com/biz/paradise-rental-boats-acworth?hrid=4OA7jBULdk2refVmaBfiHg). Granted, a lot of factors go into the price you pay including the number of people you bring with you to split the cost. Ultimately, however, I paid more for a smaller boat which was not as enjoyable. I do not recommend maxing out the boat's passenger capacity. Naturally, the more passengers you have, the less space there is on the boat and this includes the space needed for bags, coolers, floatables, and other stuff. We were crammed for space. It was tight and got uncomfortable at times. The pontoon had limited shade (what seemed like less coverage than other pontoons I've been on in the past) and because we had several people, it forced several to have to sit and bake/burn in the sun. As for the boat itself, which was 90-horsepower, it was in OK shape at best. Like renting a car, we walked around the boat (with an Aqua Sports Adventures employee) and marked on a sheet of paper any existing damage which included some pretty big dents. After leaving the dock, we discovered that the front door to our boat was broken. Through wear and tear, the hinge had become unscrewed. And despite our efforts to balance the weight, the boat always seemed to tip to one side. This may or may not have been related to steering problems which I noticed when driving the boat. At higher speeds, no matter how hard I turned the steering wheel to the left and no matter which direction the current/wakes seemed to be going, the boat always drifted right. The steering was out of whack. Therefore, I had to drive at moderate to slow speeds. Anyone who wants to drive a boat has to watch a 10-minute safety video and take a 20-question boat safety test. If you want to save time, you can watch the video and take the test ahead of time here: https://aquasportsadventures.com/booking/index.php/safety/. Obviously, this is a great idea. However, what they don't teach you is what all the different signs and buoys mean out on the lake (some, but not all), how to dock and undock, and how to anchor. I guess the staff just assumed we knew how to do all this on our own. Fortunately, some of us had boating experience, but it wouldn't hurt for folks like me who needed a refresher. We ended up taking our rental boat north to Van Pugh North Park with the intention of grilling. Unfortunately, all of the grills were taken so we went south to Burton Mill Park. We were able to find an open grill here. Both Van Pugh North Park and Burton Mill Park have beaches, grills, and restrooms, both of which were fairly clean. Since our pontoon didn't have a toilet, the park's restrooms were important. If you rent a pontoon, it's good to know where the parks and restrooms are beforehand. A map is provided on the boat and you can also use your smartphone (we relied on Google Maps). We found a cove to anchor down at near Burton Mill Park, grilled, ate, drank, and played on the beach and in the water. It was nice and relaxing once we finally got settled down. All of the Aqua Sports Adventures employees I encountered were young and friendly. The company is located at Holiday on Lake Lanier (Holiday Marina) on the south end of Lake Lanier. It's situated just outside Lanier Islands Resort, so no, you don't have to pay a gate fee. There is a guardhouse to Holiday on Lake Lanier and they will direct you to Aqua Sports Adventures which has a spacious parking lot and restrooms. While not bad, given my better experiences with other boating companies, I'm not sure I would rent from these guys again.

For 4 hours, it is $265 and then they add in the optional insurance of $35, tube rental of $30 and gas (about $25 for us, but will vary depending on how much you use). All in all you are looking at about $375, all in, once taxes are figured in. We had been to Lake Lanier twice before, but had only gone to Sunset Cove, which can get insanely crowded with everybody lining their boats up on the beach to the point that there is no room left to actually get in the water. It was nice to have our own boat and go exploring all the many "private" islands all over the lake. We found several little islands that we made our own for an hour at a time, stopping on one to have a picnic, another to anchor and swim, and another to relax in the sun. We spent the last hour tubing before it was time to return the boat to the rental facility. Time flew by very quickly. Four hours felt like two hours. Next time, we'll probably do the full 8 hour rental. Lake Lanier is a really cool lake with a lot to do. It is an incredible recreation spot with amazing amenities. On the downside, the lake is pretty difficult to navigate, having lots of channels, fingers and islands. Having a map of the lake is no help, either, as it felt to me like it bore no resemblance to what I was seeing with my own eyes. For proof of this, take any map of Lanier and lay it over the latest Google satellite maps pic of the lake. We made sure to keep our bearings on where the rental place was wherever we went, just to be sure we could get back. The return was hassle free as the dock-hand helped us dock and remove our things. This is definitely a fun family adventure worth your Saturday afternoon.

Their website proudly professes a $50,000 renovation to each of their 14 houseboats but I can tell you that no matter how much money you spend, if you don't keep it cleaned up it will always look worth a lot less. The walls were covered in a very dark brown paneling that made the boat feel small and cramped. The two upstairs beds (no bedrooms, as the bed went from wall to wall) were on a raised platform with the bed pad sitting on top and the two bedrooms downstairs the bed pad was on the floor. Their were 2 bathrooms, only 1 shower - but it was big enough for two (dirty looking though, icky things on the floor and on the top) and the bathroom floor, you know, around the toilet bottom were guys tend to hit when they miss the actual commode, yellow, brown, slimy, icky icky icky!!! Everywhere I looked the place was scuffed up, dirty, and had so many spiderwebs that I thought they had just decorated early for Halloween! I don't believe these boats actually go through an actual stripped down cleaning!!! When paying $600 a day, you would expect to have the houseboat in the same if not better condition than if you were staying in a hotel room. Right?!!!! There were 6 people in our party and none of us will ever rent again from Lake Lanier Harbor Marina. On Saturday night, the generator went out, we had no lights, no a/c, nothing. We managed to get back to the Harbor expecting to find the "on-call" tech waiting for us as we had put the emergency call in 30 minutes prior to our arrival, but no luck. We must have made 6 phone calls and finally he arrived. I found out that the "on-call" guy lives over an hour away. Wow, great management decision on that one guys! So after a 3 1/2 hour wait, we finally got up and running again, just in time to go to bed as by then we were exhausted, cranky, tired, and hot! The hot tub had crud and dirt swirling around in the bottom of the seats and floor, we didn't want to risk catching anything so we opted not to use it. Based on the money spent, this was the worst weekend get-away ever. Here are their details: All houseboats are complete with sleeping accommodations for 10, full kitchen, living area with entertainment center, bath-and-a-half, central heat and air, gas grill and Jacuzzi and waterslide on the top deck.
