He let us select our images beforehand and had them roughly pencil sketched on the canvases and ready to go when we arrived. This was no simple "paint by numbers" type class. He taught us how to mix our colors and the brush techniques we needed to get the best results for the pictures we had chosen. He even coached us on some alternative/more advanced techniques to create interesting effects to match our source images, such as adding texture/physical depth, and drips/spatters. At no point did we feel rushed and he let us stay until we finished. A really fantastic experience and we hope to do it again! I paid a little extra for the black canvas, which was a good move, because it looks extra cool! They have a tent set up, and start a timer. You get an apron and shoe coverings, and a paint caddy with up to four colored paints. After a quick tutorial in splattering technique, you get to toss paint at your canvas for fifteen minutes. This was so fun and therapeutic, and I loved seeing the painting take shape. At the end of the evening, I got to take my creation home in a pizza box, which was super convenient to prevent messes. This was such a fun experience and I would definitely recommend checking out their classes (I may do the same, when I have the time.) My painting looks excellent hanging above my desk and gives me little intermittent bursts of joy whenever I look up at it during the course of my work day. Right Mind Syracuse is always popping up at spots around town with really darling craft workshops, and I love to see it.

You go online to book a class- typically weekday evenings or weekend afternoons. Then you pick one of dozens of designs they offer to create your own custom wood sign. I was surprised that the time slot was 3 hours- how hard could it be? Well every detail is covered from distressing, to sanding, then staining and finally several stencils and paint followed by more distressing and waxing if you might desire. The finish product looks like a vintage find not some mass produced made in China sign at any local big box store. The location is just stunning, the staff are incredible- helpful, detail oriented and you can tell they truly want it to be an amazing experience. They have beer and wine for sale which is a nice perk. My only tip- don't wear anything that you would be sad to get stain on- they offer aprons but this is a workshop. B&B is a fun night out with friends or would be great for a bachelorette party or wine tour weekend. Plus Skaneateles is such a fun place to make a day out of the visit. I'm sure I'll fill up my punch card quickly- I'm going to my second class tomorrow.

I had such a great first impression at Clayscapes. I came in as a new small business owner and…read moreteacher, initially coming specifically for some tool kits and a specific clay body. The process was very seamless and fast and felt very much taken care of. Andrew, who helped me, was very knowledgeable with bodies and had I had more time I would have liked to have seen more of the site. I walked out with a sufficient amount of tools to get my program off the ground and the clay I really wanted. As Andrew assisted in loading my car, we saw a very injured bird (in this very packed parking lot). It was so disturbing how broken the wing was that I got on the phone several minutes later to find a rescue volunteer or find a way to take it home with me. I was told that there had just been a call placed in Syracuse with the same description and that it might be the same bird. On revisiting the parking lot, hoping to find the "girl from WA" who I was told caught it, we happened to see Andrew again and asked if he might know if it was scooped up. He smiled and said that they were the ones that caught it and it was off to be cared for. These are the kinds of people you want to do business with. My heart just swelled and I could drive back home feeling we did everything we could and what caring people run this place. I will be back again! I'm actually very surprised I am the first to leave a review as Clayscapes has been verbally recommended many times over since it has been about 20 years since I've bought clay in Upstate NY. I hope more follow suit!
