Let me just cut to the chase right up front before I go into my diatribe. If you want decent parking at Artpark, you have to go early. If you want a decent seat at Artpark, you have to go early. If you want quick access to food at Artpark, you have to go early. If you want to get a beer easily at Artpark, you have to go early. And if you don't want to get caught in a massive traffic jam at Artpark, you have to leave early.
If you don't do any of those things, you're not going to have a very good time. For instance, if you get there a little bit later but still on time, you'll find that the lower parking lots are already filled. Now while you save yourself $5, you'll be scratching your head when the signs saying the lot is full, signs point you to an alternate location, but then provide no clear indication of where to go exactly. By the time you figure out they mean just park in the street or somewhere, you've probably been driving around for about 10 minutes.
We found parking at the Lewiston Public Library. This wasn't too bad because there's a utility road that partially parallels the back of Artpark that you can walk up. Then there's a trail that cuts through a field where you can get to the venue. Aayiu can tell that the venue or the town has put down matting on the pathways so that the trail doesn't get overcome with weeds and such. It's about a quarter-mile walk to the venue from that location.
Here's the problem though. That roadway and path are not lit. We had to back to our car in complete darkness through a field. Artpark, if you have limited parking onsite, and you maintain pathways to the stadium from other locations, why not light the paths? Not cool at all
Let's talk about seating. I guess there are a couple of different configurations at Artpark for seating. Me, I've been to Artpark years ago where we had seats looking onto the main theater. That concert was completely fine. This configuration was more of an outdoor stage in a semi stadium seating setup. If you do not get there early, and you're GS, you will not find a seat. The entire lawn was filled as well as the margins of the side of the stairwells that take you down into the venue. You simply can't tack on a seat to the edge of the general admission area because that is the pathway for concert-goers. So if you don't get there early you're stuck in areas where you either can't see the stage or the sound is terrible or you're sitting by the bathrooms. In the general admission area of places such as CMAC or Darien Lake or SPAC, you can sit in areas in general admission where you completely the stage and/pr the acreena and with no issue hearing the band. Not so here's. Further it was so packed in that I have no idea, especially if you have to exit to the stairs in the back, how you can get out of there anytime soon if everyone leaves at the same time.
Let's talk about food and drinks. If you don't get there early, when you attempt to get a food or drinks, you will probably be waiting. At each of the major food vendors, the wait was probably between 10 and 15 minutes just to order. To get a beer, the wait was piobably 20 to 25 minutes. Further, some of the vendors are right on the outside of the general admission area. So you have the crowd walking through those lines, some people cutting in, some people confused about where the line actually is. Where you can buy beer, it's a little more organized but still the wait is horrendous. That and the beer selection was subpar.
There are some smaller vendors on the outside where you could get access to their food but there were selling ice cream bars and snow cones. So if you wanted anything substantial there, you had a considerable wait.
The other point, and this is a lesser point, is that there were some really drunk people there. And usually I don't mind too much unless it gets truly sloppy and Rowdy, but it was a Tuesday night. At 7. And people were just wasted.
We could tell from the issues we had with parking, and the fact that the streets all along Artpark were lined with parked cars everywhere you could see, that getting out of our Park was going to be a huge issue. It's essentially a venue that's right in the middle of a community. So from the sheer size of the event, and kudos to the artist for drawing that crowd, we could tell that the only way to get home at a reasonable time was to leave early. So as you're walking in complete darkness to our car, we were able to navigate out of there reasonably although. I can only imagine what happened when the concert let out.
On a positive note, the staff was very nice. Security was cool although I will mention that the policy on the Artpark website for chairs is completely wrong. The website will stay that you can bring a chair but it can't be in a bag. So we hold our chairs out of our carrying sacks and put them over our shoulders just to see every other person carrying a bag chair in with them no problem. read more
