While known for its wintery, resort-like aesthetic, I have never been here save for during the…read moresummers. That being said, it is still a great space for shopping, eating, and walking about. If one is into mountain biking, there are also some leveled courses to try out on one side of the village. However, I am quite content just to walk about, window shop, and take in the sights and sounds. The parking here is ample and there are hotels where one can stay if so inclined. There is also a memorial area celebrating when the Winter Olympics were held in the area where there are some great photo opt opportunities. There's also an outdoor play area for kids that is quite popular amongst the wee folks. It is very walker friendly, too. Probably the only area to grow on is the amount of restrooms. There aren't nearly enough to accommodate the needs--perhaps with the assumption that one can use a bathroom at an eating establishment. Otherwise, worth a day spent. And the drive there...why that alone is worth it.

When ever I come here, summer or winter (though mostly summer) I find that walking around here is a fun, and interesting time. The crowds are never overwhelming, the restaurants are not hard to find a seat in, the stores cover every category from art, to trinkets, to hockey gloves. On a side note, I have gotten sweet deals on hockey gloves up here. Most of the areas are walking areas and simple to get around, but on the edges of the village I have found a couple bike rental shops that have good deals on rentals. There are well maintained paths for both walking and biking round the village and the lake that it sits on. Bring your camera as I have hundreds of pics from this small area, and can't stop taking them. Hotel rooms are a little pricy in the area, but worth the extra couple bucks to stay within walking distance of the village. And make sure you drive here during the day light hours so you can enjoy the sea to sky highway.

It's basically a tugboat with a barge attached that chugs back and forth across the river every ten minutes or so. You can drive, but the ferry has limited capacity for cars (maybe six?), no public parking on the island, and you have to back up off the ferry when you get to Barnston Island. It's better to leave the car in the free lot at the end of 104 Ave in Surrey and walk or take your bike. (The ferry is also free.) Most of the island is private property (lots of "no trespassing" signs), although there is one park at the northwest corner with picnic tables and some marshy beach. A narrow paved road encircles the island, a 10 km route with very little traffic and plenty of scenery. On our summer bike ride, we saw everything from goats to eagles to skydivers, with views of Golden Ears Bridge, the North Shore Mountains and Mt. Baker in the distance. An abandoned home with brambles taking over the doorway was also strangely cool. Barnston Island has a peaceful feeling, inhabited yet abandoned at the same time. One car passed us on the entire ride, and the only other people we saw were fellow cyclists and walkers. There are also no stores on the island, so be sure to bring your own water and provisions. You can say you've been somewhere without really leaving.

Nice for a little bike ride, a walk in the country or just a peaceful drive... I wish there was a legal place to enjoy a picnic beside the river, though.., And it is a smart thing to bring some mosquito repellant because they like to attack fresh blood... Lol
