Quenelles were a Lyon specialty along with pralines brioche and we were eager to try it since we loved dumplings. They did not disappoint one bit. A saucy creamy delight with 2 large dumplings, the french might do little portions but the Lyonnais don't skimp on the quenelles. While on the one hand I wish they'd branch out and quenelles become a dish served here in the US, on the other it preserves its novelty and appeal by staying within Lyon borders.

If you didn't read my review of the Meat House, this is what you need to know- "All of the greatest steaks of my life have come from this meat house. They have officially been beaten, but let it be known that Lyon has an unfair advantage. This place is clean, sleek, and smells amazing. There is a pristine glass case where you can see dozens of perfect-ten types of meat from the best regions in the world, and you can pick whatever you like. Not as focused on the purity of beans as many modern artisans such as Dandelion, Rogue, Mast, or Vegas' own HeXX, but instead offering a full line of truffles, caramels, candies, and confections in addition to both single origin and blended bars the experience at Bernachon can almost feel like a spiritual one as a the staff steps softly while speaking in light tones, but once the guest is finally ready to order it is with great knowledge of both product and process that questions are answered, my eventual order probably not quite normal as a solo tasting of chocolates really is not something I'm into, though the five tasted were indeed quite special, a boozy rum tablet and chocolate lacquered biscuit particularly smooth and refined. Progressing to pastries, something for which high hopes were held given the quality of cakes at Paul Bocuse, it was in five petit-fours that the majority of 11.20€ was invested and although the Mille-Feuille came off far too soggy at 14h30 the rest of the items proved well concocted with flavors aplenty, the choux-based éclair and cream puff offering a clean break over cream fillings while the pecan tartlette and baba au rhum were each unique in their own way - the former trending bitter and nutty in a city where pink pralines are far more common while the yeast-cake's cream center offered both balance and texture amidst lightly spiced rum.

We got baguettes from down the street at Boulangerie des 5 sens and enjoyed them here. FROMAGERIE: This is a great little cheese shop with a good selection (including my favorite seasonal mont d'or)! They also have my favorite bordier butter (get the yuzu!) We got an apricot goat cheese, a vacherin, and a chaource, which I had never tried before. They label all the cheeses and specify what kind of animal milk and whether it's raw or pasteurized. CHARCUTERIE: A big selection, along with fresh meats and sausages WINE: You can get a glass to take to your table and have a cheese / charcuterie plate with the stuff you gathered at the other shops.

If you haven't tried Bordier butter, buy some to go with some excellent bread from one of the nearby bakery stalls, and enjoy. There are a range of flavours, and all are pretty fantastic. We actually usually bring a few packs of butter back to the UK, slice into chunks, and freeze which works surprisingly well. Service was helpful, and credit cards were accepted. Not much English, but patient with our bad French.
