There are much better dance studios in Chicago that will actually teach you how to dance. I am finishing up a package deal that was ridiculously expensive. Dancing has always been my thing- give me a pair of tap shoes and I'll shuffle the night away. So you'd think I'd be able to waltz my way around a dance floor...yeah, not so much! Dan and I chose our wedding song just a few weeks ago and decided to practice waltzing around our living room. We looked down at our 4 left feet and decided dance lessons may be a good idea. So hello Arthur Murray!! When I called to make an appointment the nice woman who answered the phone suggested we come in for our first private lesson (tip- print out the coupon on their web site for a complimentary first lesson) on the upcoming Wednesday evening because there was going to be a big party afterward we could stay for. Anyone who knows me knows I love a good party and so I jumped at the chance. And I figured after 1 private lesson they'd have my fiance twirling me around the dance floor at the party. Hey, I'm a fast learner! When we got there I was surprised to see how packed this place was- the snowstorm outside wasn't stopping these people from a night of fox trotting! It seemed a little disorganized at first, but finally we were put in the hands of VERY patient instructor, Drew. And believe me...Dan did a pretty good job of testing Drew's patience. Although then again it wasn't Drew''s foot he stepped on- yeah, that was mine! So perhaps I was the patient one? I do have to admit it probably wasn't such a good idea to have our first lesson on a party night because it was SO crowded and loud- probably will pick a quieter day/time next time. So after our 1/2 hour lesson (regular lessons after the first one are 45 minutes long) we were brought into the office so Drew could make a recommendation for lessons based on what he saw. And of course he suggested 8 private lessons (the largest package), but we're just going to pretend that these lessons are all for the Dan's benefit. I'm sure the next time I see Drew he's going to suggest I audition for Dancing with the Stars...he just didn't want to make Dan feel bad. ;) Drew went on to join a group lesson and the manager (chaling- sp?) came in for her 8 private lesson sales pitch. And boy can this woman sell! She had me signing my name at the dotted line within minutes, while Dan (the sensible lawyer) reminded me that we should probably discuss this before spending $1000 on dance lessons. Fortunately it wasn't hard to convince Dan that this $1000 is not only an investment in our wedding day, but also my ticket to getting on reality TV (I'm always looking at the bigger picture). As we were getting on our shoes we met another couple taking dance lessons for their upcoming wedding in February. We asked them about their experience and they shared that they were nearing the end of their 8 private lessons and felt like they could actually dance now! They also take advantage of the group lessons, which I should probably mention are complimentary if you sign up for private lessons. They raved about their instructor, Annette, who I think we may have to also try in addition to Drew. We can use all the help we can get...well at least Dan can! I'll update my review as my lessons at Arthur Murray continue, but right now I need to go practice my fox trot... Edit 4/29/08: We're about a month away from the wedding and Dan and I can dance...well, pretend to anyway! I really liked our instructor Annette, but am deducting a star based on the sales pressure they put on you here. They don't seem to care as much about teaching you to dance as they do about selling you more and more lessons. Arthur Murray was in a convenient location and I guess we did learn to dance so mission accomplished...but is our dance worth $1000? My husband and I took dance lessons at this studio leading up to our wedding to prepare for our first dance. Neither of us had much dancing experience and our song was a little unconventional, so we wanted to work with an instructor to make sure we looked confident and had good choreography. Kaylee was our instructor and she was great to work with - she was always high energy and fun and she developed a great choreography for us that we felt proud of. Two areas that would have made our experience better were: 1. Price - I was shocked when they first showed us pricing. In the end, it ended up being way more expensive than we had planned for, but we enjoyed ourselves during the lessons. 2. Atmosphere - the studio isn't very big and there were often other couples dancing in the room to their own music at the same time as us. Given the amount we were paying, it would have been nice to have a room to ourselves so that we could consistently use our own music. Overall, we loved Kaylee and were happy with our dance. My parents have been taking classes here in preparation for my wedding. I used one of the classes in their package to do a lesson with my dad the other day. I should mention that I consider myself a terrible dancer and have no background in dance at all. After taking a 30 minute class I was able to learn the very basic steps for rumba/box step and over head spin. The instructors are friendly and not afraid to give constructive feedback. My dad loves taking lessons here it so much that he wants to sign up for classes even after the wedding. I would definitely recommend taking a few classes here before a wedding as they are fun an will let you go into the dances on your big day with confidence. read more

Andrea and I had dance lessons here. I'm pretty much a lost cause for dancing, so I guess the objective of our lessons would be to make me presentable at our wedding. The instructor was great, and I think she realized early on that Andrea and I aren't the second coming of Fred and Ginger. So she kept it to the basics. Five stars for the lessons. The place is actually too small for the number of people they cram in here. I guess that might simulate actual dancing situations, but if you are paying for private lessons, I EXPECT SOME modicum of privacy and ability to go around on the dance floor without worrying about crashing into somebody else. I'm more than content to crash into Andrea on my accord while we attempted to dance. NOW, my big problem here: The big negative place is the sales pressure they put you on. Every time I came in here, the sales pressure here is almost unbearable. Its like walking into a used car lot. I'm still trying to figure out how many lessons we actually paid for, because I feel like we were owed one more. Everytime we came, they told us a different number of lessons that we had left. Plus they try to rush you to finish your purchased lessons so you can buy more. Do I blame them for doing this? Well yes and no. I understand thats how they make money - selling dance lessons. I just wish their wasn't so much pressure. Finally, one time the dance lesson was cut a few minutes short to discuss purchasing more lessons. Thats a big no-no in my book and honestly thats just rude and insulting. We paid good money for the lessons, I want my full 45 minutes! Unacceptable in my book. read more

So - I bought a gift certificate for my husband for some anniversary or birthday or something that came along. Was I mad at him at the time? Maybe. Was the gift really more for me? Definitely. That being said, the man is a gem and re-gifted it to me this past Christmas by actually scheduling our first lesson (I seriously thought he was just going to let it expire)... First - let it be known that we had a really great time. Let me repeat myself here so that you know I'm not just being nice. We seriously had a really great time. I even found myself trying to foxtrot down the street after our lesson! Neither of us was sure what to expect and quite honestly, neither of us really has any substantial experience on the dance floor. Although the front desk was a bit ambivalent towards us, everyone else was uber friendly. Our "hostess" (at least that's what I think she was?), Lola, was so nice and friendly - and she had a lot of great suggestions for us about what kinds of dances are most useful and which dances are ideal for which types of music. And our dance instructor, Alex, was completely fantastic. He was super fun and so very very patient with us. It was really a great environment to learn something that can be kind of intimidating. Since I met my husband, I've been razzing him about taking me dancing. He always had an excuse: "I'm tired", "I can't dance".... blah, blah blah.. Then on our wedding day he surprised me with a gift certificate for dance lessons at Arthur Murray! Our first visit to the studio was so freakin' fun! Our instructor Basia made us laugh and most importantly DANCE! We actually felt as if we were REALLY dancing, and we were! Walking home at the end of the night, we couldn't wait to go back. The group classes are really fun, everyone is super nice and it's neat to have an opportunity to dance with other people. The instructors take their time explaining the steps and no one ever feels embarrassed trying. The staff is amazing! They are always welcoming and smiling. Great idea, you need a couple lessons for the first dance at your wedding...you book a "lesson" and you turn up. Then you spend 15-30 minutes going through your skill level, what you want and expect, and your choice of song. You then spend about 20-25 minutes "dancing" and being sold more lessons. It's like a dancing sales pitch the whole time. Nice people and good space but I'm not buying the 4 lesson package and spending c$600 for half assed lessons. Go else where. read more

The staff here is outstanding! My gf and I have been going here for a couple of years and we love it. They are all very friendly, helpful, and patient. My only complaints are it's a little small (probably wouldn't be able to afford lessons if they had to pay for a larger place downtown though!), and sometimes it's a little hot. read more

Hello, my name is Lamarques and my Girlfriend Angela and I. Attended a two dance lessons at the studio. Total surprise to my girlfriend, she was a bit nervous. However from the time we entered the door. The staff not only made if fun but answered all of our questions in great detail. My girlfriend left, left and said. Where should I start? The place is extremely clean, elegant and in a great location. OK, sounds good. I understand that a lot of people go there because they want to have a wedding first dance. Let's say that in order to look 'good' in your wedding, you may need 15 lessons. -not hours-, since the lesson is pretty much 40 minutes. They say it is 45, but they spend 5 minutes or even more pushing you as crazy to schedule your next lessons. Question, is it really worth it to spend over $2000.00 for 15 'hours' of wedding dance lessons???? In my particular case. I love dancing to death, it's my passion, but how can I expect to be real good when I probably will need 3 lessons per week -at least-. This means 12 lessons per month equal = $1500.00?????!!! Pros: Fun atmosphere, great dance teachers Cons: Very pushy sales and continual pressure to use lessons quickly and do more My husband and I decided we wanted to take dance lessons before the wedding, and learn a wedding dance. We enjoyed the dance lessons and was a fun couples activity especially during the winter months. As teachers I really recommend Jimmy and Annette, they are both really fun and super thorough. My husband really got into it and it turns out that he is not a bad dancer at all. We got complimented at several weddings for our dance skills and helped some friends convince their fiances to take lessons after seeing how much fun we have dancing together. That being said the pressure to purchases more lessons, and then use the lessons quickly was really annoying. We would have probably continued lessons longer if we could us the lessons at a rate that was more convenient for us. But the pressure and the fact that we wanted a slower pace of lessons made us drop this as an activity. read more

I agree with the other reviews on here. I love the instructors and the facility. They are well kept and the instructors know their stuff. The working team there is super fun! Alex & Bosha rock! I don't mind paying for a skill, like dancing, and the instructors are worth the money. However, I don't like feeling like I am being screwed over on the prices. When we went to purchase more lessons, a bulk package no less, we found out they wanted to charge us $10+ per lesson then we were already paying for the 12 lessons we had previously bought. Seriously, who charges more when buying in bulk, that is not how bulk purchasing is supposed to work. Jill/Owner's - you have got to offer people a better bulk deal if you want more of them to stay. So sad that we won't be able to continue our lessons at our studio. read more

was interested in taking some basic ballroom lessons for some upcoming events so stopped in here for a consultation. the instructor was quite good and gave us a few good pointers. i understand this is a lengthy process to master any serious dance moves. however, this place didnt seem overly excited to have us in as a potential new customer. we were ushered in and out quite quickly. i did like the fact they werent overly pushy with trying to have us sign up for lessons but i surely thought it was going to be tougher to exit the studio. all we said was we needed some time to think and next thing i know were on the street walking home. their prices were incredibly high. something like $1000 for 8 - 45 minute lessons. read more

I took lessons from this studio and one in the burbs for about a year. What's great: You definitely will learn how to dance. Instead of taking only group classes with other people learning along with you, you take private lessons with an instructor. I took the lessons alone, so I danced with a professional every time I had a lesson. It's amazing how good you become quickly because of the one-on-one attention. Everyone there is friendly and warm. The instructors and the students there really want to learn how to dance well. I loved my time there. What's not-as-great: It is expensive. Seriously expensive. I suppose you're paying for the instructors time and expertise, and they are very talented. But, you do need a decent amount of disposable income to take classes there for the long term. I eventually stopped the lessons because of the financial aspect of it. If I could make the distinction, the studio would get 5 stars for talent, teaching, and environment, but 1 star for cost. read more

My fiance talked me into one dance lesson on V-Day. I was skeptical, I was always a fist pumping, grinding kinda dancer. We had such a great time connecting on a new level that we purchased 8 more lessons (at like $1,000) and off we went. Our experience was one of laughter, fun and actually learning how to dance. All of this was attributed to our amazing teacher, ELLEN. She is so down to earth, sweet, funny and the best part - she gets so excited when we accomplish the most basic dance moves. Its endearing. My fiance just loves it, I like it more than I thought I would and most importantly we do connect in a fun, different matter than previously. Our 8 just ended and I ended up buying 10 more (at $1,420 - yowzer!). That said, it is worth every penny to see my soon-to-be wife so happy. Last night Wednesday 4/21 Arthur Murray had its annual "Spring Fling" a night when all are welcome to come in socialize with others, learn some dance steps, watch the pros perform and have some nice wine and food. All for free. It was a great 2 hours impacted with a lot of information and group instruction. The staff is so down to earth and friendly, they made everyone feel so welcome and at ease to be in front of the crowd dancing. The location is so fabulous very nicely done up, you will feel so in ahh of the surroundings, the walls, the floors, the artwork, the gigantic decorative mirrors, wow. They offered everyone in attendance a complimentary private 30 minute lesson with one of the very skilled dance instructors. So I get to go back for a lesson. If you missed out this time get in on the Spring Fling next year, its a good way to try it out and learn from the best. read more

My husband and I were absolutely thrilled with our Arthur Murray dance lesson experience! We had a couple lessons with Ellen in the month before our wedding to have at least a couple steps to boast on our big day. She was incredibly patient, energetic, friendly and simply put, a great teacher! Her patience was especially visible to us since together we have about as much rhythm and coordination as a middle-class white yuppie couple. We told Ellen the name of our wedding song prior to our first lesson. Upon arriving, she had already listened to it and told us it was a rumba with a shuffle. This was Greek to us. But within minutes she had us laughing and moving together to our favorite song, forgetting about the other stress-factors and laundry list of things we still had to do in the next month. We had a blast together and think back on that time as some of our most favorite moments together while engaged. What was so great about Ellen was her energy and love for her work. My husband and I are both in love with what we do for a living and really gravitate toward others who are the same. You can really feel her passion for dance when you're around her. When we walked in for our appointments, Ellen was ready to go and excited to show us more steps. When she saw a step click for us or saw how cute we thought something was, her face lit up! She was a pleasure to be around and hands down a beautiful dancer and teacher. We spent many of our summer evenings practicing our dance in our front room. Rumba, shuffle, spins and smooches... such a perfect set of moves to represent our relationship. We had fun with it the night of our wedding and never took it too seriously. And although we didn't look like Fred and Ginger, we looked like we were having fun and that's what mattered most to us. My fiance and I decided 3 weeks before our wedding that we should probably take some dance lessons so we didn't look terrible out on the dance floor having our first dance. It was really easy to get an appointment for the complimentary 30 minute first lesson that I wanted to take with my fiance. We had a good experience and we ended up buying a package of 4 private lessons (45 minutes each at $125/lesson). The studio was really great at accommodating our timing/schedule - having a late night session, having a couple back-to-back sessions so we could figure out our dance in time to feel comfortable and confident doing it, etc. The classes cost a lot (in my opinion), but then again, we were paying a lot for other wedding expenses, and the dance lessons seemed like something fun that would be a good investment. The studio was always trying to sell us more lessons, but I totally understand why. We weren't sure if we wanted to continue lessons after we got married, but they gave us a free lesson when we came back from our honeymoon in an effort to sell us more lessons. We ended up buying another package of 4 at $125/lesson. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dancing lessons. The place and instructors were great, but it's just too expensive for us to continue the lessons. Our instructor, Alex Stuckey, really listened to us and helped us learn the types of dances we were interested in. He was a great teacher, really nice and easy to work with. I'd totally recommend this studio to others looking to get help with their "first wedding dance". The main drawback is the cost which is why I'm giving it 4 stars, not 5. My husband and I wanted to do a Tango for our first dance. We wanted it to be flashy and sexy (still classy, of course). Memorable. We signed up for classes with Arthur Murray. Over six classes we learned the same dance move over and over and over and over. Finally, on the second to last day they show us what we could learn if we take more classes and what we'll be stuck with if we don't. I left crying. We had said time and again that we wanted something coreographed and if we had started that from the beginning, we wouldn't have had to do extra classes. My brother went to a different studio and had a far more impressive dance after just 3 lessons. I voiced my concerns to our teacher and she did write us a dance then but seemed bitter about my feelings. I knew it wasn't her fault necessarily. The manager of the store, Lola, is fightening and she oversees every client relationship there, constantly trying to bully you into taking more classes and throwing away money. I imagine she bullies her employees the same way, making them fall short of what the customer wants so you're forced to sign up for more classes. I liked my instructor a lot and ultimately got something I was happy with, but not until I was forced to write a scathing email. read more

I've been taking lesson's now for a little while and everyone has been amazing. My teacher Basia is truly one of the best people you will ever meet. She has been incredibly supportive and uplifting. The rest of the staff is great, they make the atmosphere very fun and welcoming for all. All of my fellow students that I've met through the group classes have been wonderful. This is a place that is great for going to and having a great time, where you also get to learn to dance and meet amazing people. I've gone many times after long days in the office, feeling a little worn down and had my mood do a 180 after just a few minutes of being out on the floor. read more

We won a couple classes at a silent auction and put off going for several months thinking that this would be a painful experience but we ended up loving it and signing on for classes after our initial two. We were paired up with Cathy and she is a fantastic teacher/dancer. We had the best time, our only regret was that we did not start our lessons soon enough to learn much more than our first dance but we had a terrific dance to show off to our guests and the experience gave us a break from the stress of planning and some great memories. Also, they must have worked out the kinks in the tracking system and/or Cathy was on top of it because we did not run into any of the issues I'd seen previously that other reviewers did with them not getting all of their package classes. My fiance and I went to a free "wedding party" night, where they had a couple come out and dance and they also had us do a dance lesson. It was a lot of fun! One thing to be aware of, is that when you do a "party" or do any of the group lessons at Arthur Murray, they make you switch partners so you have to dance with everybody there. I didn't know they did that, so the first time it was a little weird. We've been doing lessons now for almost a year, and I really like it! Everybody there is super, super happy and positive. I work in a stressful environment and going there is a nice change of pace. It's also really hard to be stressed or think about anything else, other than your feet while you dance. Not only has the experience been really good, but I also think that my fiance and I have become pretty good dancers! I can't wait for our wedding and any other events that require dancing. I didn't give this a full 5 stars, because I do agree with the sentiment that other yelpers have about the salesiness of this place. Let me start by saying that my instructor, Susie was fantastic! The other dancers Susie pulled in during our lessons to help show me a finer point or two were also wonderful. Charles, Alex, Terrence, Ellen, and Cathy to name a few... all helped me learn the Rumba and Hustle to what I feel are acceptable levels. What a pity that the financial side of their business was such a negative aspect. There is definitely a hard-sell atmosphere in place. I came in wanting a few lessons so as to not embarrass myself at my daughter's wedding. Shame on me for allowing myself to get bullied into paying for 20 lessons (and they were trying to get me to commit to a 50+ lessons contract!) Each lesson is supposed to last 45 minutes but near the end they seemed to get shorter. I also thought I only had 19 lessons yet they insisted it was the full 20. At the time, a block of 4 lessons cost $512. I paid over $2500 for what amounted to be 15 hours of instruction, which now seems outrageous. Some advice to those thinking about going here: be clear on what you want and how many lessons you think you'll need to achieve your goal; don't let them bully you into more than you want, and be sure you get the full time once you commit; use the free group sessions wherever possible to help with the repetition. Post-wedding comment: I should have taken my daughter and wife to a few of these lessons, as they had no prior experience and I didn't get the chance to fully utilize my new skills.
