Doesn't have good instructors ... not even a healthy environment... too expensive for what they offer ...waste of time n money

I was looking for ballroom instruction for my 6 year old boy and four year old girl in preparation for a family wedding that was anticipated to feature a lot of dancing. I contacted many places and even tried a kids class in SFV but it's not easy trying to teach kids of this age group. Finally tried AM trial class and they had a very kid friendly instructor (Adrianna) and were willing to break the lessons down to shorter duration to suit their short attention span. AM classes are more expensive in general but I could not find any other instructors with necessary skills who were willing to work with us. We had 2 months of weekly private lessons, and I helped the kids practice at home. Some lessons were difficult, but mostly because my son wanted to monkey around or my daughter was too in love with herself. By the end they were able to do the basic box step, swing and merengue with turns. I even had the kids dance with the outfits they will wear for the wedding at one of the lessons. At the wedding the kids had sufficient moves to be confident and have fun. The wedding dancing turned out to be more zouk than ballroom but that suited my kids even better. read more

My partner and I have been dancing with AM since last fall, and we're having a great time. The instructors here are awesome. We work mostly with Caleb and he's a blast, very encouraging and helps you find your inner dancer no matter who you are. We've also had some lessons with Daisy who is awesome and always has a great technique tip anytime you see her. We haven't taken lessons with Edwin but we've been to some of his group classes and he's an awesome instructor too, always makes us laugh with his impressions of noob dancers. If you're going solo, they have group classes where you can pair up with other singles. Since we go as a couple we tend not to go to the groups classes but sometimes we drop in and just stick together. The group classes are free if you're enrolled in lessons so it can be a good time to get extra practice in. The events and showcases they hold are fun, plus a dance party every Friday :) We used to go to those back when we were first dating, it felt like a much better version of HS prom which we both hated ours individually, haha. Some others here have said they felt a strong sales pitch but I wouldn't say that feels true to me. We were encouraged to continue after we enjoyed our intro sessions so much, but it was very much left up to us. It's not a cheap hobby per se but you're getting very good instruction and we have really learned a lot. It's improved my own confidence in myself and my abilities and is helping me gain a sense of sexiness I've never quite had. If you'd asked me a few years ago if I ever thought I'd be performing a ballroom dance in front of a crowd I would've thought you were insane. But I even have a certificate to prove it :) I'm a work in progress but excited to continue. We're almost a year in now and have the basics down for Rumba, Tango, and Waltz. Looking forward to continuing learn footwork and styling. read more

If you know you want to invest in dance lessons, this may be the place to go. We wanted to do something fun and just get a taste, so we purchased the $99 Groupon deal where you get 3 private and 2 group lessons. Before beginning the first lesson, we were essentially told that these lessons are pretty much useless and we should invest in a dance package (I think it started around $1,200..) Our instructor was nice but he insisted on investing in lessons as well. We will not be returning for the remainder of our package as they have created a sales environment which makes us feel like we need to be on-guard as soon as we walk in. We just wanted to enjoy a couple classes and see if we were even into it... Suggestion to management; allow people to utilize a couple of the Classes, or even just 1 class, before you begin your sales pitch. read more

I would consider myself an excellent dancer if it wasn't for these minor problems, my two left feet, and complete lack of rhythm. As a result, I had a fear of the dance floor. I joined Arthur Murray to overcome this fear and learn Latin dance, which is something that I've always wanted to do. The excellent instructors at Arthur Murray have me on the right track in only a few short months. The atmosphere at AM is very friendly, fun, and not intimidating at all. I highly recommend Arthur Murray for anyone with the same fears I had! I am to the point where I have to confidence to perform a cha cha and a bachata at Show Stoppers Ball at the end of this month. Arthur Murray Thousand Oaks Years ago my husband and I realized we had five weddings to go to in one year. Oh no...we hadn't danced in years. We thought we better learn a few dances to get us through these upcoming weddings. We had no idea these lessons would be so fun and that we would continue at this studio for the next 10 years! We're amazed that we are still learning new steps every week. These lessons have changed our lives...we are no longer couch potatoes. Experience was at the Canoga Park/Woodland Hills location, but its the same owner at TO, so it applies. Good luck getting your $s back if you try to leave! Contract states that you can "cancel at any time". When you sign up they say the same (made sure to confirm that a few times). In January, I requested a refund for my remaining lessons. After 2 months of back and forth, I got SOME of my money back. They said I didn't cancel several lessons within 12 hours of the start of the lesson (per the contract) and was responsible for those charges. In response, I pulled cell phone records showing that they were wrong and that I had in fact given enough notice. I sent them copies. At that point they pretty much broke off all meaningful contact. They do not return emails, nor calls. If I reach Nicki, she defers to Lacy - who isn't available. If I reach Lacy, she defers to Robert - who isn't available. I hoped to part on good terms, but their action - or lack of action really - over the last few months has tainted any good experience I had at the studio. Next step, pay for an arbiter/judge to resolve this. At least the studio has to pick up half the cost. read more

I have danced all over the L.A and Valley area. I've attended all kinds of different ballroom events and classes from small studios to the large Culver City dance events. Typically in my travels I find that the ballroom teachers at all these studios are quite good. You can't rate a studio based on how good their teachers are. You have to look at their students. The students at this Arthur Murray are REALLY freaking good, much better than the students at any other dance studio I've attended so far. I have no idea what sort of voodoo the Thousand Oaks Arthur Murray invokes but I know their students are some of the best I've ever danced with and I've danced with thousands in the greater L.A area. Teachers, professionals, competitors, you name it. I've attended their party functions and I've attended events at other studios. There is no comparison. The students are just better. (Those that have been there a while obviously, newbies don't count) I don't know a whole lot about the Arthur Murray teaching process but what I do know about them is that they are widely known for being one of the most expensive studios around. Very very expensive. I suppose much like anything in life though you get what you pay for. There are lots of other studios that will teach you to dance for a much cheaper cost, the question just becomes how good do you want to be? Do you just want to learn enough to get by or do you want to be great? That is what it really all comes down to. If you have a deep love of ballroom and you are in a position where cost is not an issue and want the absolute best training available in the area, i would highly recommend this studio. However if you are just looking for a simple easy class to pick up a few moves to dance with your husband or wife only, then other studios might be a better fit. read more

All of the instructors are great (especially Zak!) and we learn a lot in our personal lessons and in the group classes. Everyone is really supportive while you're learning and there are lots of opportunities to practice and the atmosphere is great. After going through a very painful divorce, I decided to fill my time by taking ballroom dance classes (a proper gentleman should know how to dance). I wasn't sure if I'd even like it, but at least I could learn some basics & maybe not look like a fool on the dance floor. Very quickly, dance classes became the things I looked forward to in my week, and I soon started taking up the group classes in addition to my private lessons. Aside from dance class giving me something to focus on and keep my mind occupied, the instructors here at Arthur Murray are fantastic--not just dance instructors, but also incredibly supportive and welcoming. My instructor, Adrianna, is amazing! I didn't think I'd ever catch on to the steps (especially when learning several styles of dance), but Adrianna somehow makes the lessons stick, and from class to class I can actually remember where my feet are supposed to go (still working on hands, though). Additionally, the other students there are a great group, and are very supportive, making Arthur Murray a great place to learn to dance and to just be social! Oh my goodness!! Arthur Murray has taught me the joy of following! Lol..seriously though, I've loved dancing forever -- but I've never ever realized how amazing it is to have a song come on (any song!) and be able to dance together with someone else-just right there on the spot- without having like a choreographed routine. It's sooo much fun! ...and these people showed me how to do that! The staff is really kind and welcoming. All the instructors are SUPER knowledgeable--about sooo many dances and techniques ...and tips to make things easier! They're all really nice and helpful. And they make things fun! They're really good at explaining things and breaking things down... AND they are lots of fun to dance with at the parties! ..Elsewhere, I've tried once a week classes where you learn a routine, exercise dance classes that just keep you moving, even Dancing with the Stars workout DVDs in my living room, which have all been decently enjoyable for me.. because, well- I like to dance lol...and also they were good workouts. But I wouldn't say I really learned anything about dance in those classes..I memorized an ordered sequence of steps or I did this one awesome move that fit this one part of the song soo perfectly..but I'm pretty sure I've left most of what I "learned" in the room where I learned it. I've found that Arthur Murray, though, is kind of all about the opposite--being able to learn the basic styles and steps of dances and how to understand and interpret where my partner wants me to take my next step ...so that I'm prepared to go out and dance.. whenever/wherever I want--for the rest of my life! ...so yeah pricing for learning the skill of how to ballroom/social dance isn't the same as my Dancing with the Stars DVD lol... or even some other dance studios..but from what I can tell, the knowledge and results aren't the same either. Whether my mind is being blown away by the introduction, clarification, or deeper explanation from an instructor on a private lesson...or I'm laughing alongside the other people I'm getting to know in group classes as we practice and piece together fun patterns, or -last, but in no way least- being whisked around the floor in waltzes ...or spun every which way in salsas...just dancing, having fun at the parties, when we all practice our latest learned tricks :) ...I am having an absolutely wonderful time learning how to dance here!!!! read more

My daughter and I decided to take dance lessons in April of 2013 she was a senior in high school and was going to prom and wanted to learn how to really dance and I had not really danced in decades. I looked around a bit tried a few places that gave low cost group lessons which were ok but not that great and almost gave up, but decided to give Arthur Murray a try. Well, its almost a year later and we are both hooked on dancing. It's not cheap but you definitely get what your paying for! In addition to a great teaching staff a number of the members have been dancing for quite a while and are very helpful and supportive also. They have multiple group classes and practice parties during the week that are very helpful. I've gone from awkwardly standing watching others dance, to being very comfortable in most social dance settings, that I would have avoided less than a year before. It is well worth the time and money invested! I recommend the studio highly. read more

Although the price was a bit more than we had anticipated, I would say it is worth every penny. Wedding planning can be extremely stressful and overwhelming and dance classes gave us a fun escape for an hour! We loved the staff at the Thousand Oaks location and our instructor, Zak, was so much fun to work with. He customized our dance to fit our personalities and let me just say, I am not a professional dancer, but our wedding night we killed our first dance! No one was expecting our dance to be choreographed, and they loved it! If you are looking for a place to learn how to dance Arthur Murray Thousand Oaks is the place to be. The instructions make you feel at ease. They are able teach the dances in a way that is easy to learn no matter what level you are dancing at. My instructor Edwin really lays the foundation for me, but when I am having difficulty with a step, Robert steps in and fixes it. He has a way of explaining and showing me ways to correct the problem that makes sense to me.. His input is always appreciated. So put on your dancing shoes and come see for yourself. read more

My fiance and I came in for some pre-wedding help. Since we're from out of town, we only had time for two private lessons and a group lesson, but Yulia did a fantastic job. My fiance is new to dance, but Yulia was encouraging the whole way through. She helped us choreograph some simple moves that would look great for the intro and the ending.
