My husband and I signed up for Mickey's mixed media painting. She was absolutely awesome and had so much patience with a couple of beginners. We painted our dogs in bright colors and they turned out pretty well. The studio is so cute and we had access to any colors paint, pens, markers, brushes we wanted to experiment with. Wish I lived here as I would be there monthly for lessons and just a fun experience. We'll definitely sign up again when we return to Santa Fe, and we have our paintings at home to remind us of our fun afternoon with Mickey. read more

Artful Soul was a great initiation into the world of painting! We took a three-hour afternoon acrylic painting class that luckily didn't require any previous painting as we had none. Our instructor, Laura, provided us with the freedom to choose our own subject matter and guided us through each step of the process. Time flew by and before we knew it, we each had our own unique painting to admire. After chit chatting over mimosas and pastries we learned about the Van Gogh painting that we were going to replicate. Not having any painting experience owners Laura and Mickey walked us through the steps of building up the composition. From there we were let loose with the paints to interpret the masterpiece as closely or as loosely as we wanted, with Laura and Mickey cheering us on. Laura, co-owner of Artful Soul, recently guided me through a beginning watercolor lesson, and I consider the experience THE highlight of my vacation in Santa Fe. She was able redeem all of my fumbling attempts in the past with watercolor and really drill down into what makes watercolor enjoyable and different. She's a gifted instructor in art and paced out my lesson with support and encouragement--and I should mention all the evidence of her preparation. I came away with two finished works that I felt proud of, and I left our time excited to practice my new watercolor skills when I return home. I look forward to popping into to Artful Soul with my teenage daughters and friends on future trips to SF because everyone would benefit from Laura's relaxing and fun teaching style...and of course, her artful soul. Sunday afternoon I went to a "Mimosas and a Masterpiece" event at Artful Soul: Creative Experiences, Santa Fe - the masterpiece of the class was "Red Hill, Ghost Ranch" by Annie O'Brien Gonzales (love this painting and others by this artist - so beautiful!). Laura and Mickey (along with Karen) were our hosts and led us through a fun time recreating this art from our own perspectives (and from our own skill levels too - lol). Enjoyed some mimosas and some yummy snacks (they provide along with all supplies)! I had a great time and, taking into account I've never considered myself artistic and I've never painted in acrylic, I'm actually pleased with my final piece (of course I think I need to tinker with it more, and maybe I will at one their open paint nights). My wife Linda, twin cousins with their spouses were able to spend some time in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Finally able to take our dear childhood friends painting class with low expectations on performance but high expectations on fun. I was absolutely blown away by the experience, Laura is a truly great teacher and can get non painter's like me to actually paint something that amazed me. If any of you are in Sante Fe I highly recommend you give this a try. You too will be amazed. My wife, cousins and their spouses came away with the same feelings.
