As a general rule for DC, I caution people going to exhibitions that you pay for in DC. Artechouse is no exception. This immersive experience was compromised of one "main room" and 3 "side rooms". Although the 5-10 minute shows were cool the first time, every time you saw them more made the experience less unbelievable. Some of the interactive components of the side rooms were broken when I went, so it was disappointing to see. The price... one word: sheesh. Even though the experience itself was underwhelming, the steep price confirms my belief that I will not be going back. I really hope Artechouse can re-evaluate its services and price in hopes they can attract a larger crowd next time they re-open. read more

Great for lovers, art lovers, stoners, psychonauts, futurists, new media makers, techno-creatives, children, and bored pandas. This is a review for the DC location but Artechouse ("home for innovative experiential art") has venues with immersive digital installations in NYC and Houston as well. The exhibits change periodically - you might remember the Van Gogh one from a few years ago which was heavily marketed. We came here during cherry blossom season and the "Blooming Wonders" exhibit paid tribute to that theme. The main room that you experience upon entering is the most awe-inducing. The visuals are very trippy and psychedelic. Even my toddler lied down on the floor to space out at the display looking stoned lol. (Free for under 4!) There are a couple of side rooms/halls with interactive displays and exhibits exploring the relationship between nature, art, and technology. There wasn't too much to see but the artwork is beautiful, intelligent, and something I would've loved had I stumbled upon them in a museum or gallery. But that's the thing - I'd be less "oh that's it?" if this were *AN* installation in a museum rather than *THE ONLY* event in the space. Great place for a date though. There's a bar and they offer a date night package. We spent 45 min here but an hour is more than enough time to explore everything. 3 stars for the experience, 5 for the digital art, so 4 stars overall. read more

Overall we had a great experience at ARTECHOUSE DC. This unique experience is great for groups of all sizes and all ages. While we were there we saw families with toddlers, couple on dates, and groups of friends attending. We did expect the first immersive large room to be more "all-encompassing", meaning, we thought when you walked in that the ceiling and all four walls would be completely enclosed by the artwork. That wasn't quite the case since the ceiling and one of the walls were still exposed. A bar was positioned on the open side of the exhibit so you could look over towards the art. We really enjoyed the rooms with the flashlights and the "singing" plants! Some of the artwork wasn't as interactive as we hoped, but we really appreciated the detail and design of the artwork as it was. We would visit here again with friends, but we were hoping it would be just a bit "more". read more

I was a little underwhelmed with the exhibit. I was expecting a little bit more interactive activities or diverse visuals, and the space was smaller than it looked. I did like the educational areas surrounding the big open area, and I did like scanning the QR code for a 4D live image/video of the sea creatures in our exhibit. I just wish there was more to see/do. The big open area with the lights was also crowded & it was hard to find a spot to take nice photos. They do provide you cushions to sit down on the ground though. If you don't sit to watch the lights video (about 15ish minutes for the entirety of the show), you won't need the full hour of your reservation. read more

Artechouse has been hit or miss for me. It really depends on the exhibit. The first time I visited, I was a little underwhelmed by the red laser exhibit. It was cool to watch for a few minutes, but soon I became bored. Perhaps I'm not cultured enough to appreciate such art. The next time was for their spring blooms exhibit. That one was immersive, gorgeous, and the extraneous rooms were filled with fun activities too. I loved that visit and the drink I had at the bar. Most recently, I visited for their deep sea exhibit and got extremely nauseous. It was unexpected. I don't usually get sick from flashing lights, but something about the exhibit was the opposite of the red lasers one: too overwhelming. I sat in one of the side rooms for a bit to gain my bearings, but did not stay long overall and didn't feel like my ticket price was worth it. I'd go back selectively if there's an installation that sounds really cool, but I might pack some anti-nausea meds next time. read more

The exhibits are always wondrous and exciting and I love just letting them wash over me so I can vibe with the art. Visiting is truly a magical experience. I also really enjoy their cocktails. I've had a few and liked all of them. I do wish it was a little more accessible, as there are steps to get in and out of the exhibit. Digital art is a cool medium and they do it well here. I must say when I first heard about this exhibit, I was beyond excited to visit. Then, the things my mind conjured up... it just simply excited me even more. Butttt, unfortunately, the Blooming Wonders exhibit did not live up to the hype or my expectations. When we walked down to the main room, it was initially engaging to see. It was almost like it was warming us up for a grand experience, however, that was the only "true" room that elicited some kind of wow factor. After leaving that room to explore more of the exhibit, then realizing how limited in size the exhibit was, we were quickly underwhelmed. So much so, we walked around to double check that we hadn't missed anything, which we didn't. Overall, the exhibit was just okay. My cousin and sister came to visit and we wanted to do some touristy things and decided to visit this museum. My sister had raved about the exhibit they had at Art basal Miami and since we love Art basal, it was a no brainer. We paid about $40 for last minute tickets and the wait time was no more than 15 minutes. This exhibit is located deep in the basement and it was rather chilly, like uncomfortably too cold for me. As much as I wanted to enjoy it, I was also ready to bail as soon as my family was satisfied. The focal point of the room is this big open room that has 3D imaging throughout of the ecosystem. There are other side rooms with similar themes. Not going to lie, it was a bit trippy and def not recommended if you suffer from any visual impairment or seizure disorders. Also, I felt like some of the visitors may have been on a psychedelic, just saying. Honestly I wanted a bit more and left feeling kinda underwhelmed. Maybe if I bought advance tickets at a cheaper rate, I would've seen the value. read more

Very beautiful exhibits, and a different kind of experience. Everything was clean cut and modern. The visual art was colorful and just makes you smile. It's definitely an unusual experience, but super fun and unique in a way that will just make you happy. They have a main room where they present about a 20 min show. The one we saw was an anime style cherry blossom theme. The experience makes you feel like you're flying, and is very peaceful. Surrounding that area are a few other interactive activities like karaoke, a robot arm that draws pictures, and interactive projections that you can play around with. The bar located when you first walk in is definitely pricy, but the drinks seemed interesting and different. Make sure to download the app and play around with the 'markers' they give you at the bar. Staff is very friendly, and you can tell that some of them are extremely passionate about the tech-art they show off. They have a lot of awesome exhibits, so it really depends on which you attend. My friends and I went to Bloomig Wonders and it was great! They do a decent job at crowd control, but it can feel packed at certain times. I recommend this if you want to try something new in DC. read more

My first review at Artechouse but my second time here! The first time I went, it was the cherry blossom festival so it was themed this way. Beautifully decorated! I recently went 2 days ago for the beyond the lights exhibit. The colors and lighting was really cool, but it's a very small exhibit. Many of their displays were redundant. I do like that they added the option now to have drinks but I also don't like that they don't allow you to walk around with your beverage so you're restricted to stay at the bar. As for pricing, they offer discounts for first responders and students but only for time slots before 7 PM (the time restriction is a bit silly in my opinion). I would consider revisiting for a different exhibit (like the holiday version) but i don't think I would come back to see anything I've already seen. read more

I'd heard of Artechouse for a while now. It's an exciting concept, and I had it on my list of things to see in DC. An opportunity to visit arose recently, so I was excited to take the plunge. I viewed the Beyond the Lights exhibit and thought it was gorgeous. I've never experienced anything like it. However, the exhibit is rather small, consisting of the main room, interactive exhibits on either side and a small bar at the entrance. The star is the 20-minute "lights show." You can relax on the floor and watch everything unfold. If you're prone to motion sickness, you might want to take a Dramamine pill because the movement of the projection can throw your equilibrium off. The interactive displays were interesting but very fast to move through. The displays worked for the most part, but occasionally they didn't. It could have been a user error, but they were still quite enjoyable. The staff happily answered questions and led you to the various experiences. The bar served themed drinks that adults could enjoy. The price per ticket is steep, so you'll have to decide on your own if the exhibit is worth the cost of admission. I'd be interested in viewing the cherry blossoms and holiday exhibits in the future, but this is not something I'd return to regularly. However, if you have the opportunity to go, do it! read more

I found this place to be very interesting. There is metered street parking and commercial garages available within a reasonable walking distance to park your vehicle. You have to purchase a timed ticket, as they meter entry. I was able to walk-in and purchase a ticket form the next top/bottom of the hour. I would not rely on that though and highly recommend purchasing your tickets online early. The lobby has a small gift shop with items such as hats, magnets, shirts and is where you can also purchase admission tickets and check in. The admission may be considered a bit on the pricey side, but please keep in mind that you are supporting inspiring artist. This place has some hi-tech 21st century pieces of art. I highly recommend downloading the Artechouse app before getting here. It helps bring the interactive pieces of art to life and is really cool. The exhibit space is very hip and trendy as you would expect, but is not a very big. The main exhibit was titled Timeless Butterflies and features an immersive audio-visual story that pays tribute to nature's exuberance and the arrival of spring. It is referred to as a mega-sensory spectacle. Off to the right of the main room, you will find a small interactive piece and an opportunity to use your app to bring the piece to life and see butterflies flying around the room. The common theme of most of the pieces in the exhibit are butterflies. To the left of the main room, you will find a bunch of small exhibits including a piece with LED screens lined up in a row that come to life and make a sound when you walk past them and a piece where you color a butterfly and make its wings flap by using your arms. There is also an interactive floor with butterflies and fish as well on this side and another opportunity to use the app. The gallery features a bar, the XR Bar, that overlooks that main exhibit room. They serve beer, wine, mocktails and cocktails here that are crafted to go along with the experience. It is referred to as an extended reality bar. I really like this place but it is not a huge consumer of time, nor does it have a lot of exhibits. The exhibits that it does have are pretty cool and I really liked them. This unique gallery is definitely worth a visit and is a change of pace from the normal Washington D.C. monuments. I highly recommend checking this place out and supporting the arts. read more

Not much parking in front but there is a garage and valet nearby. I visited this art exhibit around 4pm on a Friday afternoon during the summer. The theme was Isekai: Blooming Parallel Worlds. It features a combination of art and technology. I was able to walk in and get tix immediately. This place is much smaller than I had imagined. There are very few rooms and limited space. It was an interesting experience, but I was hoping there would be more. My daughter and I visited all rooms in less than an hour. read more

For what it's worth I always enjoy my experience at Artechouse. I appreciate the different art exhibits they feature with a technical /visual art spin. I do wish I hadn't gotten the premium ticket that cost me $50 and came with a drink and an Artechouse tote bag. The drink I got with my token was the Butterfly Dream and it was tasty and not too strong. Prices weren't too bad, about $10 per drink and the names were cute and related to the exhibit. The Artechouse bag however, looked somewhat childish and had butterflies all over it, I ended up donating it. While I like it, parking is a pain if you don't want to pay twenty bucks for garage parking. It also consisted of one big room and 2 small side rooms. This one had exhibits you could interact with that played music and changed colors with motion etc. I just don't see how people get these great Instagram pictures unless they are going on weekdays at odd times. Everyone pretty much stays in the main room because it has the most impressive display. So it's difficult to get those great views and angles. I felt like I was done with everything in 20-30 minutes and I normally like to take my time and really consume art. The best view is from the bar in my opinion because you get the big picture. Speaking of bar, there was even a dancing light exhibit behind the bar. There are stairs down into the exhibit area but there is also an elevator so plan ahead or be prepared to wait your turn. When you enter there is a small store and a counter for tickets and check-in. I would go again but at a different less congested time. read more

I've been to ARTECHOUSE twice, once before the pandemic and once after. The experience was equally magical both times, and I have the rest of the locations on my travel wishlist. If the floor to cieling projections and interactive setups don't immerse you in the story of the exhibit, the music is sure to transport you. Have always had a good experience with the staff too, which is always a plus. The most recent exhibit I saw was ISEKAI in August, which featured a 360 projection display with an accompanying soundtrack on loop in the main room, some chat AI and AR interactive sections in the hallways, a rhythm game in one of the rooms to the side, and a drawing robot with posters you could purchase (love mine). If I didn't have plans afterwards, I could have stayed there for hours just watching the main room show; I'd have the soundtrack on loop if I could find the artists or a CD of it! ARTECHOUSE can be a fun, all-ages experience and is a unique museum/art exhibit trip, especially if you feel like the Smithsonian tour is overplayed (still love the free museums around DC though!). I'd recommend walking/taking public transit and plan for a little extra time to get lost since the roundabout/plaza area is a little confusing. The entrance is a little hidden, but the inside is pretty big. I also wore earplugs since I'm sensitive to sound and the smaller hallways felt really loud to me, but I see plenty of people not use them so up to your judgement! Would say the experience is worth the cost, but each run is unique so check out their IG for more of a perview before you buy. read more

Very small immersive experience. But! It's super cute! Highly innovative and fun! I guess $20 isn't that bad but.... You walk into this large space where you're completely immersed in manga like art. It's beautiful. The show is about 20 minutes long before it replays itself. Very so immersive! There are many interactive high tech things to do like talk to the art in English and have it translated into Japanese. Ask the art a question and it answers you! Play a tabletop video game, karaoke, see a motion sensored video of yourself on a screen. Watch a robot sketch manga. Very cool experience but wanted more rooms to explore! The space was smaller than I anticipated. I want to wager that this hinders the opportunity to create more interactive exhibits. My friend and I are fans of flowers and anime so we had to visit the Isekai-cherry blossom exhibit. For $30/person ($24 for students), you can view a 20 minute loop of stunning animated visuals accompanied by ethereal sounds. There were 2 other side exhibits that were interactive and neat too. The main attraction is a big video projection room with like 20 minutes of animations that loop. Then a few interactive exhibits on the sides, but not much. It wasn't cheap, but it was a different kind of experience. Would I come here again? I'm not sure. Currently leaning towards no, but I guess it depends on what their next exhibit would be. Overall best immersive experience I have been to. Let me explain a little more about this comment. I live in RI and travel to Boston for immersive expereinces. I have attended a Van Gogh and a King Tut exhibit. Both of these at the end of the exhibit spit you out into a large room where the immersion occurred all around you. At Artechouse DC you step right into the immersive exhibit. The Cherry Blossom exhibit has butterflies and flowers a bloom all around you. Step into the room to the left and you will find more ways to immerse yourself into this experience. From making different flowers dance using your body or making butterfly wings flap. Stepping onto rose petals to activate a domino effect set of digital screens that have flowers blooming and moving/swaying all activated by me/you! Artechouse was very interactive, bright, vibrant and all consuming. Heads up: this exhibit is not for those with motion sickness- it moves VERY fast. You've been warned.
