It…read morehouses a free (!) art gallery, which is just a big room with a little add-on at street level. The basement is open and is also visibly historic, but doesn't have much in the way of art. It does have cool air and a restroom. The scope of the art gallery clearly isn't large (bearing in mind that a free art gallery the size of a mansion is ho-hum by DC standards), but I enjoyed what they had and it was a perfect use of the time I had to spend on it. They were happy to entertain our questions both via email and during the various trips to check out the space. The contract process was fairly straight forward and fortunately renting out the space includes both the art gallery and the outside garden (it rained on our wedding day and the ceremony was initially going to take place in the garden). A few days before the wedding, we were informed that Amanda would be the staffer on hand on the actual wedding day. I sent Amanda my proposed timeline and we reviewed it over the phone. She was willing to assist with flow of show and confirming chair and floral deliveries/set up. She advised us of some renovations that were taking place in the alley behind the garden, which is where the ceremony was originally going to take place. While the staff had not previously informed us of the planned renovation, it all worked out in the end. Amanda emailed me photos of the renovations, offered alternate solutions to ensure the scaffolding wouldn't be as visible, emailed the contractor to ensure they would be done with the renovations for the day prior to our scheduled photo time and ceremony start time, and offered to be at the venue early to ensure that everything was clean. When I realized it was likely going to rain on the wedding day, I emailed Amanda asking for a quick discussion on a rain plan. She contacted me right away to confirm a time and we spoke the morning of the wedding to come up with a rain plan. She handled the new set up with both the chair rental company and the florist. The set up came out beautifully. Also, one of the photographers left a water behind and Amanda emailed me about the item so I was able to retrieve it the next day. I would definitely rent this space again!

DACOR Bacon is a sensational venue for hosting a party/wedding/school reunion/etc.. Best of all, our guests love DACOR Bacon and come back each year. The house is an elegant Federal brick building (1801), home of John Marshall when he was on the Supreme Court. It is decorated with beautiful antiques and paintings. If you're having a large event, the garden AND the house are able to accommodate 180 people. When we wanted to rent a tent for dancing under outside, they helped us. When we wanted great DJs, they helped find them. For smaller events, the house is wonderful for a cocktail party, lunch or dinner. It retains its beautiful old world charm and is located just a stone's throw from the White House. Parking is fairly easy on weekends and in the evening We have also used DACOR Bacon for alumni cocktail parties. Guests tremendously enjoyed the elegant and comfortable setting. Washingtonians love to come to parties there -- it's the only still functioning grand historic house in Foggy Bottom. People walked by and say, 'What's that? I'd love to go in there." Out of towners are thrilled with its location, history and beauty. The staff is very experienced and helpful. They go out of their way to ensure the success of the events. Sylvia, who is the events coordinator, always goes above and beyond to make sure that we have a good experience. Alba and Jose make sure all the logistics are running smoothly, and they do a wonderful job. Meg wonderfully oversees it all.

There is much more than traditionally framed art- there are light installations, interactive pieces, and all kinds of different textures and modes of art. I was impressed to see a Chihuly chandelier too! A great mix of small, impactful pieces and large grand ones. So many great photo moments. The staff here were wonderful. Passionate and helpful. The security was also so kind and I chit chatted with them throughout my visit. This is one of those places that makes you feel patriotic without feeling political. I was in awe of all the amazing things I learned here.

On Thursday nights, at certain times of the year, they offer late night museum access beginning at 5 PM, where you can enjoy some cocktails and explore the galleries. We came here for their Pride celebrations. It was a little frustrating since not all of the activities were available. They had a "story time" that ended up having a sign up list that filled up within minutes. And it was positioned on their materials that this would be more open. Also, my partner was running a little late. And the complimentary Champagne also went within 10-15 minutes. I got the champagne and served about a half inch, while I noticed some guests had so much, it was overflowing form the glass. Regardless of the champagne situation, it was fun. The gallery is small and often has rotating galleries. We loved the Miro exhbition currently on display.

The museum is an old mansion, and in some areas poses challenges for those with mobility limitations, people of a sort which I saw plenty of on my visit. Typically you can find an elevator if you look hard enough. The collection is eclectic and often defies description. I find a significant number of their pieces I either hate or am bored by, but the overall experience is aesthetically distinctive and it's not what you'd get downtown. Outside of its pure museum experience, the Phillips offers a lot in the community, from events to kids to engagement for those dealing with dementia. A walk down to the basement levels yields a vista of local non-professional art. I appreciate the commitment to the community.

I particularly enjoyed all the wonderful photos of suffrage marches & protests. These activists sure knew how to get media attention. One of the women featured prominently is Alice Paul. She was a brilliant strategist. She lived in the house at one time. There is a wonderful marble bust of her in the main hall. My guided tour was very illuminating. It began with an informative video & then continued with a personally guided tour by a Park Ranger. All for free.

Ms. Paul was the founder of the National Women's Party (NWP) which was the fore-mother of the ERA. Now, it is a museum dedicated to women's suffrage movement. There is also an amazing amount of equal rights materials here including a feminist library. You have to attend a tour in order to see everything on display, but it is well worth the 5 bucks they suggest as a donation.

Rhizome DC is one of the most unique things in all of Washington, DC. It's an arts community/space…read morein a stand alone family home in Takoma. On the first floor in the living room is where musicians perform their art. My wife, baby, and friend attended a 24-hour music concert where anyone could bring an instrument and join in. When we entered, there was a $10 suggested donation box. In the back was an artists painting to the music with books scattered on the floor. No one acknowledged us at all, which was odd. The upstairs is a public art gallery with art on the walls for sale. One room allows you to add to the art by using a sharpie to write anything on the walls from a drawing to poerty. If you want a creative experience in DC, come here. It proves DC is more than politics.
