It was a safe space…read morewhenever I was feeling down, and a haven for theater kids and musical lovers who just wanted somewhere they could sing loudly, let loose, and be themselves. I mentioned in a previous review that I had a bad experience here a few months ago and noticed a shift in the energy. What once felt welcoming and communal had started to feel more "mean girl" and "you're not one of us." Last week, I decided to give it another chance because, as I said, I've made so many wonderful memories at this bar over the last decade. I was one of the people who showed up during the pandemic, when we were all sitting socially distanced and still somehow managing to create magic together. I still remember my friend singing his signature "You'll Be a Dentist" while everyone sat six feet apart, and the entire room cheering as if we were packed shoulder to shoulder. Those are the memories I cherished about this place. Unfortunately, after my most recent visit, I can confidently say I won't be coming back, and I can no longer recommend it to newcomers. In my opinion, it has become increasingly elitist, cliquey, and toxic. A brief example: I was sitting on a stool around the piano area. Anyone familiar with Marie's knows that some people around the piano take the experience very seriously, almost as if their Broadway career depends on it. I stepped away to get a drink, and when I returned, someone had taken my seat. No problem--I simply moved to another empty stool. A few minutes later, another patron approached me and said, "That's my seat. I was sitting there." I apologized and explained that someone had taken the stool I had originally been sitting in, but that I believed the seating was essentially first come, first served. People constantly get up, move around, grab drinks, or stand to sing, so it didn't seem like a big deal. It turned out the person who had taken my original seat was with his husband, and it also turned out they were close friends with much of the staff. Once he decided to make it an issue, staff members came over and immediately engaged with me as though I was the problem rather than attempting to de-escalate the situation or hear both sides. They simply took his side because they knew him. I found that incredibly unprofessional. One staff member in particular, Yvette, whom I've always been friendly with over the years despite not knowing personally, repeatedly told me, "I'm just checking on my friend." But that's exactly the problem. As staff, your responsibility is to check on all patrons equally. Just because your friend is upset doesn't automatically mean they're in the right, especially in an environment where alcohol is involved. This entire conflict was over a bar stool, which made the response feel especially unnecessary and immature. What this experience ultimately reinforced is my biggest criticism of Marie's Crisis: the staff does not seem equipped to handle even minor conflicts in an impartial or professional way. Because there is no security presence and because many longtime regulars appear to have close relationships with employees, some patrons seem emboldened to bully, pressure, or dismiss people they don't consider part of their circle. I've witnessed regulars telling people to "shut up" rather than politely reminding them of the etiquette around the piano, and instead of discouraging that behavior, it often feels tolerated or even encouraged. After nearly ten years of coming here, this was genuinely disappointing. I've had incredible nights, met wonderful people, and created memories I'll always treasure. But the atmosphere that once made this place feel special has changed dramatically for me. I can't support this bar anymore. If you're looking for a welcoming GAY bar to sing show tunes in NYC, I'd honestly recommend giving Uncle Charlie's or Townhouse a try instead.

Their website is kept up to date with all their events, including what they're teaching at the drop-in classes. You can also volunteer to help at the front door or whatever and get in for free! The style itself isn't hard to learn, especially since it's slower blues music, and it's more improvisational and connection-based than a lot of other styles. I like that the beginner classes at least broach the topic of lead-follow dynamics up front, instead of other styles, where instructors will spend an entire hour covering some exact choreography of steps/moves without really teaching how to lead or follow. Even though we booked very far in advance, he never dismissed any of our concerns or questions and treated us with extraordinary respect. The contract was clear, concise, and absolutely in favor of the customer. The prices were very reasonable considering their service, and they offered a number of different payment options to make it convenient. As far as the performance, all of our guests were so impressed and excited by the live music. I found them through a random Google search, so I was a little anxious that I hadn't heard them live before. It was my mom's one and only special request to have an orchestra at my wedding, so I was also nervous about making sure she was happy. From the very beginning, Franco was professional and super easy to work with. Very responsive to emails and willing to accommodate all of our (many, often last minute) requests. We asked him for a lot -- we had the group play prelude music, different music for groomsmen, bridesmaid, parents and bride processions, recession and a bunch of hymns in between. We also had him come to our wedding rehearsal, for an extra fee. For the prelude music and processionals, I gave him a list of song requests from group's extensive repertoire. For our recession, I really wanted something that was not on his list -- "Sky Full of Stars" by Coldplay. I found sheet music online and a recording of another brass band playing the song. The sheet music wasn't written in an easy key for brass instruments, but I took a chance and forwarded it to Franco. He went out of his way to find better sheet music for his team. It ended up sounding wonderful! The hymns were the most important thing for my mom. She loves big, loud, grand church music. The week of my wedding, I sent Franco a number of long-winded, frantic emails with sheet music for the hymns, tips about how to play with my church's (very slow singing) choir, my mom's instructions to play very dramatically, etc. One of the songs they had to play wasn't even in English (the verses were in Malayalam, my native language). It was very last-minute-bride of me, but Franco took it all in stride. He showed up exactly on time for the rehearsal and discussed cues, etc. with our organist. I didn't have to worry at all! And on the day of, everything went perfectly! It gave me so much joy to listen to The Chamberlain Brass play during our service. The hymns especially were marvelous and so grand -- exactly what I was hoping for! I was smiling ear to ear the whole time they were playing, they sounded so heavenly. And my mom loved it so much, I swear she listens to a recording of our wedding hymns every single day. From beginning to end, The Chamberlain Brass was definitely the vendor that was easiest to work with for my wedding, and they absolutely delivered on the day of. Cherry Lane Theatre is New York City's oldest continuously running Off-Broadway theater. Located in…read morethe West Village, it has a storied history. Major American plays were put on at the theater - by writers including F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Eugene O'Neill, W. H. Auden, Gertrude Stein, Samuel Beckett, Pablo Picasso, T. S. Elliot, Tennessee Williams, Lorraine Hansberry, Edward Albee, Sam Shepard, David Mamet... The film studio A24 bought the theater in 2023. After an extensive renovation, the theater reopened in the fall of 2025. I visited the theater last week for a performance of You Got Older. The play was great. The theater is small and intimate and was very comfortable. It felt more like an upscale movie theater than a theater (cupholder in the seat in front, comfortable spacing between the rows). My only complaints are small. I don't mind paying $20 for a glass of wine, but if I do, I'd prefer an actual pour. They're charging $20 for half glasses of wine in tiny plastic cups. It's natural wine, and I'm sure it's pricier than what other theaters are pouring. But $20 for that amount of wine almost made me laugh. Or cry. My other small complaint is that there's no lobby to speak of. When you walk in, there's nowhere to go - some people were standing in the concessions line, thinking it must be the line to scan your ticket. It's just tight. There's nothing they can do about that, since it's a small, historic theater. But the next time I attend a performance, I'll probably show up just a few minutes before - it'll save me money on a second thimble of wine, too. I really enjoyed my first performance at Cherry Lane Theatre. It has an incredible history and is now a plush, comfortable little Off-Broadway theater option. If their future theater productions are anything like You Got Older, I'll be back.

I don't want to give too much about the play away because I know she will perform it elsewhere but if this is the sort of theater coming out of Cherry Lane, it's a harbinger of good things for the future. The theater itself is quite intimate, with only 16 rows or so. I was near the back and didn't feel like I had to squint to see the performance on stage. Whoever did the set design made very good use of the stage space such that the audience could feel transported into different "rooms" and time zones. Acoustics were pretty good too though I would occasionally miss a part of the dialogue over the sound of the cacophonous laughter in the audience. There is a bar in the front and you can bring drinks into the theater. I wish I could've also checked out Wild Cherry, the restaurant attached to the theater, but it's too poppin right now. Some of the best stars got their start at Cherry Lane and it's lovely that they're drawn to such a place a short subway ride from where I live.

As some of my colleagues were checking in and paying the entrance fee, a female host stated that one of my male colleagues, who is a person of color, was not allowed to enter because of the type of sneakers he was wearing. I politely asked where on the website or in the dress code it stated that those sneakers were not permitted. She avoided answering my question even as I showed her the dress code directly from their website, which did not mention any restriction on that type of sneaker. She then claimed it was at the promoter's discretion, even though the promoter was nowhere in sight. We then asked if the four colleagues who had already paid the entrance fee could receive a refund since our entire group was no longer able to enter together, but we were told "no" because it was a final sale. What made the situation even more disturbing was seeing other men being allowed inside while wearing sneakers. Witnessing that discrimination happen right in front of me was extremely upsetting. I give this place a horrible rating. Racism and discriminatory behavior should never be tolerated in any environment, and I hope this social club takes these concerns seriously and makes meaningful changes moving forward.

La Victoria worked with us to ensure that both had access to the facility before the start of our party. The chef selections were amazing (raw oysters, lamb lollipops and spinach pies to name a few things). Absolute perfection from beginning to end!
