Kinda wild that I didn't write a review the last time I was in this jazz joint…read more Last time I popped into the 2am show and it blew my sox off. I saw Miki Yamanaka randomly for the 1st time. But apparently i missed writing a review. Maybe because there are many glowing reviews already. But may I put my 5 star review on the pile. This time we caught the 2pm Sunday open jam. We were smartly near the front of the line so we got my favorite spot, right on the bar rail near the stage. The drinks were good and strong, the service was quick and succinct. The jam was incredible. I didn't know all the guys but the guy on drums is a legend named muppet. He held back on his solos on the first 2 songs. On the third, when the baton was passed to him, he ripped off an impressive solo that would be amazing for anyone, and he is 93. We had to dip out to catch our flight, but cant wait to stop in again next time.

Still, this was enough to get a good feel of what the club is all about. Just standing in line we got to talk to a musician, who had just played at another location, but told us the people playing there that day were amazing, including the 91-year-old drummer "Muppet". We went during the day so no cover charge, but think they do at later hours. We got some spots at the bar, knowing we would not be able to stay long. From any seat you are able to enjoy the whole atmosphere and set. They had one server and one bartender, and I honestly thought at first they would be scrambling with all the drink orders but the way they worked, quickly and still being personable with each guest was impressive. The band playing was great, we stayed a bit more than we should have because of how good they were. Very intimate, chill way to spend time enjoying live music. The only reason I took one star off is the restroom situation. I went down hoping I could use the facilities but the mold smell and other strong smell made me sick and I had to run out. Just make sure you go before you are inside or hold it. Apart from that, very intimate, chill way to spend time enjoying live music.

Each table has good visibility of the stage and the musicians played some jazz favorites. We went during happy hour and found the drinks to be affordable and the cocktail selection adequate. It's a low key establishment from the outside but once you are in it feels a lot more trendy. The stage is right in the front and all the tables can get a good view of the stage. The music can be loud at times and the ambience is more on the dimly lit side but still a great spot. The service was great, and the drink selection was cool too. I would definitely pick from the selection of speciality cocktails. I got the smoked old fashioned (or similar) and that was potent, Smokey and delicious. We also got a few bites to eat. Other than the tuna tartare (didn't feel fresh) everything we got was nice - nigiri combo, kimchi fried rice, kings toast.... Nice drinks, nice atmosphere, good food and great service!!

Let me be clear, the main redeeming aspect of this place is the talent on stage. The musicians were exceptional and deserved far better than the environment surrounding them. I ordered a scotch neat, something I'm very familiar with, and immediately knew something was off. When I politely flagged down a waiter, he responded with visible annoyance, as if I was inconveniencing him by being a paying customer. I explained the issue and simply asked if it could be checked or replaced. Instead of addressing it professionally, he walked away without a word, returned holding the bottle and my glass, and said, "this is what you were poured," before carelessly tossing the drink back onto the table. No apology. No explanation. Just attitude. It escalated from there. When I confronted him about his behavior, he denied it outright and then doubled down with an aggressive, confrontational stance, getting in my face and effectively threatening me. His exact words? "If I tossed your drink on the table, it would have been all over you!", and "Man, shut yo ass!" Completely unprofessional and unacceptable in any setting, let alone an establishment that positions itself as upscale. The manager's response was just as disappointing. Instead of addressing the behavior of his staff, he blamed me, asking why I "chased" the waiter and suggesting I should have gone directly to him. That's not how basic customer service works. I tried to resolve the issue directly, respectfully, and without escalation, something his employee clearly had no interest in. I was thinking if I talk to the waiter first, he wouldn't get in trouble with his manager. To make matters worse, the manager continued to defend the waiter rather than de-escalate the situation. At that point, it was clear this wasn't a one-off issue; it's a reflection of how this place operates. I paid my bill and left. For a venue that attracts world-class jazz talent, it's astonishing how low the standard of service is. This place is doing a disservice to the artists who perform there. I will never return, and I would strongly caution anyone expecting a professional, respectful experience to look elsewhere.

Of course the one time I went with my friend they didn't have any live jazz, but I'm wondering if that's the reason we were able to get a table as I've read other reviews saying this place often had a long line. Their cocktails are expensive, but strong and very creative. I got the Birth of the Cool, which had citrus vodka, grapefruit noice, elderflower liqueur and fresh lime juice. It was so tart and refreshing... but priced at a whopping $20 for that small glass. Whatever. We also got two Nutty Irishmen ($23), which had espresso, brandy, Bailey's, and hazelnut liqueur- super rich and very boozy indeed. Although cocktail prices are steep I would absolutely go back. It's a really cool spot.

I have a deep affection for this area and I remember there being a different bar here in the past but in recent year(s) it has changed to Zinc Bar. Unlike many places in the area, Zinc Bar is not looking for a divey look or trying to attract a hot nightclub crowd. Instead, Zinc Bar is an Art Deco themes bar that offers live music generally skewing towards jazz music. The decor is *beautiful*. Small statues are displayed throughout. Art Deco style moldings and designs are found from front to back. The front area is where the bar is located while the back is the lounge area that feels like it could have come out of an old noir crime story from the 40's. As someone who absolutely adores Art Deco just sitting in this bar and taking in the atmosphere was really great. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, though sometimes you will have to wait at the door for a host to seat you (this appears to vary based on time of day) and how crowded they are. The bartender made me a King Cole cocktail nice and quick and the host was very kind about letting me stash a gift I had purchased for a friend in the coat area (not supervised so keep an eye on your stuff, folks). I fear I do not recall what was IN the King Cole but it was fruity, sweet and tasty. Zinc Bar is now one of my go to bars in the area if I need a place to touch down briefly. I've gone back twice since my original visit and I look forward to going again.
