I took my grade two and three students on a field trip to the Leighton Art Centre and they loved…read moreit! It's quite out of town so when going you have to incorporate that into you time and make it a full day. We arrived and automatically went into the cabin where we would be doing our art. Our tour guide was Emma and she gave each of the students a notebook to keep and take home which they loved. She asked them to look around the room but they had to stay seated and draw an object or thing they could see from their seats. Then after they did it once they had to flip to the next page and find another object in the room and draw it and she gave them a time limit the first time of 5 minutes and only 3 minutes the second time to show how it gets harder. Some students were asking for erasers and she explained that they don't have erasers because they believe that artists don't make mistakes. Then they students started their clay projects making a landscape and they had lots of fun doing this. Then we had lunch in that same room after students cleaned up and then they had play time outside in the snow which the leader explained the boundaries they had to stay in and that all nature things including snow stay on the ground. Then we did a nature walk and then the students got to go through the Leighton house which they really enjoyed especially the room with the parrot and all the trees! Thank you Leighton Art Centre !

It's a short drive south of Calgary. I used google maps to get me to the Leighton Art Centre. The drive there is beautiful. Lush rolling green hills and beautiful forests. I swear I was transported to an English countryside! If you like scenery, a summer drive in this area is highly recommended. Our art lesson was held in an original little school house, now an historical landmark, built in the 1950s. After our art lesson (which I determined I do not have a talent for lol) our instructor led us on a short nature walk up to the the Leighton House Museum. A beautiful home originally designed by Alfred Crocker Leighton that features much of the home's original furniture and the Leighton's personal belongings. The home also showcases AC Leighton's original artwork as well is now home to many local artists' work where they are displayed and for sale. The house is beautifully situated over looking a breathtaking view. The Leightons were dedicated to art and the art community, and I can see why artists come there to paint, there is so much inspiration all around you. Definitely worth the drive out there for the views alone, but the museum and learning a little bit of local history is a nice bonus too.

I literally had 12 hours to explore Calgary and found this gem near by where I was staying prior to…read moreheading to the airport. The retro style of the cruisers are adorable. The owner was absolutely lovely and amazing and recommended a scenic route to the Peace Bridge and along the river. There are group tours available. This was absolutely the best way to enjoy the city. Highly recommend it.

Reworks Upcycle Shop is like a DIY Pinterest board in the form of a real local business... except…read morethe products are actually amazing quality because professionals made them and not me! And if we wanna talk local, more than half their products are made in Canada and 99% from North America. We're talking indestructible messenger bags made out of used seat belts that go as far as to tell you what kind of car they were salvaged from. I stumbled across Reworks without a clue what to expect, wound up doing a good chunk of my Christmas shopping here, and will be back to do a tonne more! Here's what I found: - Purses made from pop can tabs creating a high quality aluminum chainmaille. ( I bought 2 of 'em) - Bottle openers from used bicycle chains. (I hope someone buys me one ;) ) - Bowls from used bike chains...actually, there's a lot of bicycle culture reflected in this store, which I think makes it all the more cool. The owner is a true bicycle fan and her store takes my lifelong love of bikes and brings it into the rest of my lifestyle with style. Used license plate clutches, bike tire belts, wine and beer bottle serving trays, chandeliers and everything. I imagine the product selection at Reworks changes often to keep reclaimed fresh, but even if all the awesome things I've mentioned no longer exist by the time you read my review, you'll still be able to expect high quality and unbelievably creative local products here. If you've ever uttered the term "shabby chic" you need to check this place out.

We did the Eat the Castle tour at the Fairmont back in August and it was an okay experience. We do…read morefood tours everywhere we go and honestly, wouldn't rate this one super high. For one, it's expensive - over $300 for the both of us. We've never paid that much for a food tour so we had high hopes. The content was okay and the portions were big but the food honestly wasn't amazing. Plus, we had one gal in our group that had multiple allergies and they didn't plan it correctly so instead of catering one plate to her allergies, they had one plate alcohol free, one plate meat free, etc - and instead of taking back the extras and fixing it for everyone else, they just handed out her allergy plate. For example, there was one steak with a fermented beet sauce and fermented blackberry and since I was sitting next to her, they gave me the plate without either because it was made to be "alcohol free". To pay $150+ for this tour and not get what you paid for was a little disappointing. It was fine, just nothing special. I think a walking tour in downtown Banff would probably make more sense!

I didn't know what to expect, or better yet, I wasn't expecting much. And what a surprise, it was AMAZING! Karen, the owner was so friendly and knowledgable. The ladies attending the tour were very welcoming, the bus was comfortable and the tour was great. Who knew that cookies were so enticing. We visited 5 different locations, all incredible. The samples were generous and each location provided for enough treats to gain a few pounds, LOL! It started at Calgary's Farmers Market WEST with a delicious orange ginger juice, coffee, berries and the best hamburguer ever. There we visited the chocolatier and Yum Bakery, omg, the chocolate and the cookies were amazing, then we visited Mercato, Metro Vino, Crave and others that I forgot the name. It was fun, informative, delicious, very well organized, great hosts. Learnt a lot about the amazing food happening in Calgary, so super highly recommended!!
