This event... is... AWESOME!!
I first went to A4A in 2007 when it used to be held at the Bonhams & Butterfields auction house in the Mission. It has been evolving for over a decade and apparently they are celebrating their 15th anniversary this year on September 23 @ 6:00pm. I think the Galleria's Design Center is it's new home since last year's event.
So basically its an art auction that benefits the AIDS Health Project clinic on Market St near the Castro, but they also serve wine and have a ton of Bay Area restaurants that cater it too. The last time I was there Kettle One had set up a huge ice sculpture/ vodka fountain which was awesome.
There is always plenty of wine, beer (booze in general) and lots of food to eat while you are walking around and looking at all the artwork for sale. You can even preview what art will be there on their website. It's really a cool way to experience what the Bay's unique art scene has to offer in one big place while you drink, eat, and socialize with friends or even the artists themselves.
Tickets are $80 ($180 for VIP), which may seem pricey, but that includes entry, unlimited access to ALL the yummy food and drinks, coat check, and first-come first-serve seating (but you'll be too busy walking around spoiling your senses anyway). Plus, 100% of the proceeds go towards local AIDS services in the City. :)
If you're a foodie, a wino with discriminating taste, or an art lover, I highly recommend ya'll check it out. Tommy Toy's will be there this year -- yum. :) read more
