The ARTery (puns can be fun) may make most of its money from custom framing, but it is the art supplies that got my attention. If you're a painter in pretty much any of the main mediums, you'll find a rich selection of tubes and cans in a rainbow of colours here. There are stretched canvas' and even some wood panels, you have to special order those from Michael's. Run for the last 15 years by mother/daughter team of Bobbi and Zoe, The ARTery sits on a corner in an old style storefront in the vintage downtown area. Within its lath and plaster walls rest a large collection of coloured papers and drawing pads as well as lots of other art supplies and art-related knick-knacks. During my most recent visit, Zoe was giving a demonstration to one of her customers on how to use some liquid inks in alcohol. The mother/daughter team are happy to show you the technique necessary and even let you get your hands wet if need be. We are all artists and it's small art stores like The ARTery that bring it down to a local level, where it all starts. Take a short walk past the Carlton Hotel and browse the handmade card selection or maybe have a sit-down in the book section and flip thru The Big Book of Art. The guests were enthralled to watch Heather paint as the blank canvas came to life throughout the course of the evening! Heather is a gem and her ability to communicate made the whole process run as smoothly as possible. Heather lives quite a distance from our venue however, she had no problem investigating the area and made it happen! Quarterly Art & Wine Tours, March, May, Sep, Dec, on Friday evening from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Buy a wristband & City wine glass at the booth set up in front of Bella Cose boutique on the corner of El Camino Real, in the block that the Carlton Hotel is located in. You will see it. Unlimited wine tasting & appetizers, & some deserts in many downtown shops. Art is displayed in some of them. Many wineries participate & provide the wine tasting. Some shops have 2 wineries posted inside. Sometimes there is live music. This event is really fun and keeps growing. They host other events as well, like Sept 12th, was Concert in the Creek, an outdoor stage was set up and for a small ticket price there were bands playing all afternoon/evening. Around the holidays there are many other events as well.

Our evening with Lisa and her daughter Violet was so much fun!! My husband and I had the…read moreopportunity to create some stained glass air plant terrariums with Lisa's guidance, while my Mother-in-Law made a fused glass bowl. We learned how to cut pieces of glass and add copper tape that we would then solder together into these amazing and functional art pieces. MIL was working on composing her own design using different layers of colored glass that would later be fired and shaped. I'm so impressed with the outcome and how cool her new studio space was. She had all the materials provided to us and made sure we were each getting enough of her time, since she was dividing her attention between three people! Lisa was really cool and made us feel like we were old friends. We enjoyed her company and were grateful she could lend her artistic eye so that our pieces would be visually appealing. I'm so glad we tried this out and I plan on coming back again to try another project. The photos of our new terrariums don't do them justice. Lisa even provided the air plants!
