Came here due to a promotion and I've always passed by it and never stopped by but glad I finally came! The meal was delicious with a large portion size and a lot of meat, veggies, and rice inside the burrito. The chips were crisp and the salsa was fresh. I've passed Armadillo Grill many times as there are so many good places to grab lunch in the area. I didn't realize this is a quick service style place, which serves me well on this day that I actually didn't have much time for a full sit down meal, and I hey, I'll spend less right? Wrong. I found the cashier helpful and nice enough. There was no line so I told her I'd never been there. She enthusiastically suggested a burrito bowl with a side of tortillas; sounds good. Naming off ingredients, I'm thinking this is like Moe's where you decide if you want onion, salsas, sour cream etc (we all know guacamole costs extra). As she rings me up I'm noticing the small charges for just about each ingredient. I can't say I'm a penny pincher but it adds up. I spent $22 on a burrito bowl and a soda. The sour cream was a tube handed to me with the bowl. I suppose the bowl was shareable so maybe I should've just ordered a taco. Ok fine, lesson learned. Sitting down I notice the dining area is not very clean. Kind of sticky and a few used napkins on the floor. The food was just ok. The steak was definitely tasty, but the rest tastes like I could've made this at home. I just don't feel any pull to return. There is an upstairs area and a patio so that's nice. I was fed. This reads like a two star review but I like the location and the nice cashier earned it three. read more

Good fast mexican food here! I came here on a night at like 8 ish, and there was no one inside. I ordered a chicken taco, which was a little expensive since it was just chicken and a tortilla. All toppings (even lettuce and tomato) cost extra. It came out pretty fast and it was a HEFTY amount of chicken in one taco. I'm guessing that's why they charge a little more. It was juicy chicken, not too much flavor though, but wasn't expecting much. The tortilla was a little sweet but good. Honestly it did fill me up as a snack, so if you are looking for some mexican protein at night, this place should do the trick. read more

I am not sure what has happened but this place has gone way downhill. My beef was burnt and tasted awful. The chicken on the burrito tasted weird. The over priced queso wasnt even warm. And $3 for a small fountain soda? Wont be going back again. read more

The food was not great for the price and the gentleman got upset when I politely told him "yes sir." I stupidly paid $20 for a bowl instead of burrito. When I asked if that was possible I was looked at like I had 3 heads. The ordering process is not very easy for one. And everything is WAY OVERPRICED. LIKE FOR REAL, just rob me of my wallet and kick me to the street then have the audacity to ask me for a tip on the screens. Naw. Not again. Don't go! This place has been around for ages and we popped in recently for lunch during the holidays. You fill out an order form in line, hand it to the cashier, pay, and then then wait for your food. While the food was good, the wait time was a lot longer than we expected. The line to order was short, and the downstairs tables were not filled, leading us to expect a relatively short wait for our food. However, we went to the upstairs area and found lots of full tables waiting for their orders. I get it, they might have been shortstaffed, but it was still a really long wait. A great place for a casual, quick lunch. Nachos are great and plenty for two or even three. I had a bowl of chili as well which is packed with meat. Not your typically chili. There almost so much meat in this chili you need a knife to cut it. It wasn't to spicy but had alot of flavor and was well seasoned. Definitely a hefty meal. The downside was the size of the salsa they sold. They offer a $.35 option which is about 2 ounces of sals or a larger service for ~$3.50 but it about a pint of salsa. Nothing in between. I started with the small and then after two chips worth of salsa went for the larger option. The salsa was very good and not spicy at all. read more

Queso was pretty good, but I wanted it to be warmer and creamier than it was. Guacamole is pretty average. Their chips are thin and texturally satisfying to eat. It was my place in college and remains the exact same flavor profile from years ago. The nostalgia gets me every time. We have been coming to Armadillo grill in Carrboro for 25 years. Tonight hit an all time low. Rude staff (esp Sarah who shouldn't be in the service industry as she rolled her eyes as we placed our order), terrible food and the worst atmosphere ---they turned the lights out on us during our meal 15 min before closing (8:45pm) b/c they were in a hurry to leave and were frantically closing up the place - on a Saturday night at 8:45! Tony (MGR) and his staff were very friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. And, as expected, food exceeded expectations and consistent to what i have always known from AG. This is a hole-in-the-wall place that specializes in Tex Mex food. The prices are very fair and it's a fun place to go with friends and to watch sports. I used to come here with my family and we would occasionally enjoy buffalo style wings. When I came back years later, I saw it hasn't changed. Their chicken wings have a great buffalo style sauce. I never tasted anything like it anywhere else I've gone. The price for $10 wings isn't bad and it's fun to eat them as a special treat. They make a great cheese sauce as well - great with chips! What can I say? This local Tex-Mex chain is THE choice for a quick, tasty, inexpensive lunch. Their chicken soft tacos are awesome, always coming with lots of big chunks of freshly grilled chicken. You can taste the smoky flavor and you have your choice of several toppings. The chips and salsa are great as well, with just the right amount of heat in the salsa. I would say that the most admirable thing about this place is the consistency--the quality stays at a high level. I tend to stick to the chicken tacos and the chips/salsa, but I can say that the Mexican rice is also very good. Lots of people rave about the queso, but I'm already pushing it with the sodium in my choices, so I'll leave the cheese fats alone. The bar upstairs is pretty hopping most nights and they provide free chips and salsa with a drink order. On Fridays, they have $3 pints of Foothills Brewery beers. Service is always friendly and efficient. You fill out an order card along one wall, then take it to the cashier who enters it and takes the money, then they call your name to come pick up the tray. Often, the order is ready before you even have time to get your plasticware--and these are each made to order right out in plain sight. The decor is pleasant, in a renovated historic Carrboro warehouse with two floors (both with high ceilings), brick walls, and colorful tables and chairs. read more

The people running this place just... don't care. $20 for lunch. The food is microwaved. The queso is the consistency of water and has zero flavor (used to be good). Enchiladas microwaved to within an inch of their life. Rice is crunchy. Me: Hey, just wanted to let you know you're out of coke." Worker standing there doing nothing: "Ok, we'll get somebody to change it." 15 minutes later. Nothing. I guess you'll get somebody to change it... after I'm done with my $20 lunch and you've lost me as a repeat customer. I also never get anything but attitude from the people taking my order. No acknowledgement when I walk up to place my order. No "hey, how ya doing?" No "thanks, enjoy your meal." But their credit card tablet ALWAYS asks for a tip. Make an effort. Come on. My boyfriend and I were excited to try this place despite the bad reviews. We are big Tex mex fans and this was no good. The service isn't great. They call your name when the order is ready and supposedly they called our name and just left our food to get cold because we didn't hear them. This is my absolute favorite spot to dine at in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area! Here's everything you need to know about A-Grill... Parking: Parking can definitely be an issue at times, but isn't it always? With that being said, there is a tight, gravel, lot directly behind Armadillo for its patrons. Otherwise, its get in where you fit in... Ambiance: One of the cool things about A-Grill is its versatility. In addition to being a quick week-night option, Armadillo can function as a date place, a nice family spot, or even a getting banged-up with the buddies and watch the game bar if needed - just head upstairs to the relaxed bar area. Ordering: If you've never been to A-Grill before, then it might take you a second to digest the ordering process, but not to worry. I trust everyone reading this is a human being, and can figure it out without any further explanation. Its very simple, once you decide what you want. Usually your order is out in about five minutes or so. While waiting, most people use that time to take advantage of the salsa bar, just off to the side. Food: My go to is the steak burrito add/guac. The steak has a great, grilled, smokey flavor to it. I think the grilled flavor of their meats is what really sets A- Grill apart from other tex-mex spots in the area. Wow-I was so not delighted with our dinner here. And actually neither were my husband or kids. We thought it would be a win because you could customize your order and select what items you would like on each. Pretty important for kids. But what if everything you put together tastes the same and that sameness was pretty bad to begin with. I had two soft tacos and a chalupa and other than a tortilla that is fried and ones that are not they did not taste any different. I enjoy spicy food but when the spice is so prominent and the same in every item you might as well just put it in a blender and make yourself a tex-mex smoothie. Neither of my kids were too excited with their food and it was my daughter's birthday dinner so I felt bad she didn't get the meal she had anticipated. She had the chicken burrito and though the chicken meat was good quality it was again permeated with this overwhelming spice. Hot and spicy are really not what makes the food Mexican. My other daughter just wanted the bean and cheese burrito and omitted the rice and the fourth item in it (can't remember now). Instead of filling the tortilla up with additional beans and cheese they gave it to her half filled. We ended up having to order her a second one because we are used to Carrburrito size burritos. Someone compared this to Taco Bell and that it was a step up. I have to say I would much rather eat a 7 layer burrito from TB than go here again. Seating was limited and a end of soccer kids celebration was going on so it was crazy loud. We just kind of ate because we were hungry, not because we enjoyed it. The prices are very agreeable, but that's mostly because most basic taco items (I.e. guac, tomatoes, etc.) must be added in for extra - otherwise you ONLY get the protein. I like the concept here with having the menus posted and ordering at the counter. It moves quickly and the food comes out pretty fast. I just wish I could say I love the food here and can't wait to come back, but honestly, even though it relatively affordable, I found it to be quite greasy. I've been coming to Armadillo Grill for many years, and while there's room for improvement, I can't stay away. My order is the wings & queso combo, which includes a drink. I never knew I needed this combination in my life, but I've never been the same since. I get the 5 wings with buffalo sauce and ranch. The wings will take a little longer to come out, but that makes me think they're made-to-order in small batches. They're meaty and juicy, served with "the good kind of ranch". Then you move on to my true vice, the queso. The queso is creamy and unique against standard restaurant white queso. It's probably my favorite in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. The chips are delicious as well! The service here can be hit or miss - sometimes it can take forever before you get your food. Or, they might not get your order right (despite you writing down your order yourself). On my most recent trip they only gave me wings instead of the combo, and the staff made me swipe my card again for my queso after realizing the error - not great customer service when my order sheet was correct and I've already waited for the wings. Sometimes the restaurant/drink station can feel like it's not as clean as it should be as well (think: sticky). Overall, the price is right and a good bang for your buck! read more
