I hired Mustard Seed Renovations to knock out two 6' wall sections in my home, install two sets of French and two single doors, expand an existing porch 7x8', replace screen, re-roof with simple metal roofing panels and install an outdoor fireplace and light fixture. The timeline given for the project in the estimate was 2.5 weeks. Sherman and Caroline made a great personal impression. Kind people who are well intentioned, but clearly do not have the expertise to provide the services they promise they can deliver. This project was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. It was clear from day one that Sherman was in over his head. He hired two guys off the street (who left ALONE in my home on day two while he went to go help his wife for 4 hours) and had to redo both their drywall and framing work, costing two days of work at a minimum. He never displayed a sense of urgency or an understanding of time management. He didn't take the time to really prepare for the project or put together an accurate estimate. He asked to delay the start to go back to another project he had to repair, promising me we would still finish by October 16 when I had family flying into town the 17th. By the beginning of week two of the 3 week project it was clear we were behind. His subs did not show up and yet when I asked him to work longer hours or why he was starting late or leaving the project he would look me in the eye and say "I'm not worried, we'll get this done" or "I need to be with my family." All you have to do is look at the pictures to see how this story ends. Everything you see is the state of the work on October 17th. From drywall, to door installs, to gas lines and electrical, to tin roofing and screening installation Sherman went from his promise on the day we met that he did all of that work to "I'm not the expert" or "I've never done this before" on the actual day of install. He had to hire in gas line installers, electricians, drywallers, and more for things it turned out he just didn't know how to do. He mangled my doors and I never did get the carpenter he promised to repair them. Literally every single project he started in my home was left unfinished. Not a single thing is completed and many things have to be redone or repaired. On Oct 17, the day after the project was to be complete and the day I had family arrive into town, he showed up to "finish" the 5 things we agreed were priorities and had not be completed - he did not have any workers with him and at 1pm I looked outside to see him packing up his stuff. When I went downstairs to ask him about the fireplace trim and missing moulding in the home he said "I just have to go home. I need to spend time with my family. Your house is beautiful as it is and it will be fine for your guests." I fired him on the spot. After 3 weeks of stress and problems and checking in and listening when he had a breakdown with employees, understanding when he said he needed a mental health day because he was having a panic attack I was completely in shock. How dare you tell me that my house is fine the way it is, when you looked me in the eye dozens of times and made me a promise the work would be done. I canceled another contractor to give Sherman and Mustard Seed Renovations a shot and some work for their up and coming business. Caroline promised me that when it was time for my job I would have their undivided attention and yet she never stepped foot on my property during the project to lend a hand and called Sherman away to another project on multiple occasions. I would like to say that maybe they'd be great for a smaller project - but I can't even say that. As you can see in the pics the craftsmanship and attention to detail is completely missing. It's simply poor quality work. Sherman works stressed and rushed and does not have the experience in home remodeling to provide the end result he promises. I believe they are good people, but they are in WAY over their heads and really have no business offering services they cannot deliver. It's unfair to the customer to put them through the stress and deliver such a poor unfinished result. Sherman needs several years working under an experienced GC before he is ready to manage his own business in the residential realm. They will make you feel like they care and are kind, country, hardworking people with integrity - unfortunately the end result does not align and you'll end up with more work - and more frustration - than you started with.

Finding Mustard Seed Renovation not long after they began taking on clients truly felt like Fate…read more We were looking to build or renovate and, when we came across our potential dream home, the next step was finding someone to turn our dream into a reality. We spoke with several companies across Charlotte/Concord area. Some companies never even replied to our inquiry, one seemed to say "their kitchens" would take the entire budget, and another had a really delayed start time for any job due to scheduling. Mustard Seed had the best communication by far. They were the only ones who talked in depth with me first and Caroline even got some rough room measurements from our realtor, Pinterest inspiration from myself, and an idea of our style and things we'd like to do prior to our first in person meeting. By the time I met Caroline, it felt like I already knew her because of all the correspondence. And on that first in person meeting where we walked through our soon-to-be home, Caroline pulled up a sketch of our main two makeovers-the Kitchen & the Master Bath. I can not say it enough to friends & family who tour our now completed home: the design-build benefit of this husband/wife duo is a value added that I'm not sure I can even quantify. I could say all the things I liked and mark all the Pinterest pics I wanted, but if a contractor asked me to put pen to paper and solidify all of my ideas into one cohesive plan-I could never. Enter Caroline. Between her and Sherman, we got the house of our dreams with some additional items we didn't even expect at the beginning(ie-my new remodeled pantry!) They were able to keep us in budget too,most importantly! We were the first project of a large scope for them. However, both Sherman & Caroline have experience in their respective fields, and they were also flipping houses prior to taking on clients. What really sold us besides the communication, which I've already mentioned, was the fact that these two were clearly very genuine,sincere, hard working, and trustworthy. We have given references to quite a few people with nightmare stories of other contractors who leave job sites, don't fix things or make them worse, etc. Now, it goes almost without saying, that construction or renovation projects can and most likely will have some ups and downs. We had some issues with subcontractors for our project but, even though no fault of their own, Sherman and Caroline were always willing to come by to resolve an issue or to look for another professional to correct it. They are experiencing the same hurdles as everyone else right now which is just finding enough workers but they always hustled! At no point did we have concern that the work would be any less than perfect when all was said and done. As for the scope of our project, while we did not need to knock down walls or move plumbing, we did redo our kitchen, our master bath, our guest bath, our half bath, change out stair railings, frame out and refinish the fireplace, redo the pantry, have Sherman provide some custom woodwork on quite a few pieces (vent hood cover,barn door,bench with push to open drawers), change out all recessed lights and add new pendant lighting in the kitchen and master bath. We also had Hvac installed in our sunroom. We built into our garage a bit to create my non negotiable wine/coffee nook. Caroline also designed some custom seat cushions for our breakfast nook (where we also added shiplap) and the bench reading nook that Sherman built for our daughter's playroom. There was a lot of detail work and a lot of focus put on making all of these aesthetic changes form one cohesive picture. Everyone now comments on how the flow of our entire home is so perfectly suited from one room to the next. And Mustard Seed is who we credit for that. Caroline creates and curates the vision, and Sherman brings it to life! And don't be fooled, Caroline's quite handy herself! Our project happened in two phases (planned from the beginning due to supply lead times for new semi custom cabinets) : most of the work ,besides the kitchen, happened in the first phase before we moved in. About a month after we moved in, the kitchen reno began because our kitchen cabinets had finally arrived. So we experienced it both ways. I am work from home and Caroline and Sherman were communicative regarding any workers who would be on site with or without them. They were clean and respectful of our space and property. All in all, we can not stop showing off our home and raving about the company who made it all possible. We are so glad we found Mustard Seed when we did. We are so honored to be a part of their 'coming up' story and to see it from the beginning- we know they're going places and we feel like we got in on the ground floor before the secret was out! We plan to keep in touch with them and we will always go to them for any future home project needs!

I needed 2 outdoor faucets replaced. They were leaking badly and had hoses stuck to them. TruBlue…read moreto the rescue! The handyman arrived on time, quickly assessed the situation, and after getting the needed parts from the hardware store, fixed the problems. He then provided a walk-through to show his work, and after I assured him that the job was satisfactory, he left. I would not recommend working with TruBlue…read more We hired them to build a single wall, install French doors, and move a light switch. At first, our experience was great. Wendy, the general contractor, was prompt in communication, provided a detailed quote, and scheduled the project quickly. However, once work began, it went downhill. Their crew was supposed to start work Monday morning. They texted Sunday night and said someone called out and asked if they could start Tuesday. No problem, things happen. I was in a meeting Monday afternoon and got a call from them asking if they could come right then. I had to rearrange the rest of my day to accommodate them but did. They showed up and only stayed for two hours. They asked if they could start at 8 am each day and we said yes, they could come as early as they would like. They did not show up at 8 am on any day, but rather closer to 10 am. The project was supposed to take at most, 4 days. Instead, it took 8. They blamed this on us, for making changes throughout the project. However, those changes were minor (like changing our minds on the door knobs for the French doors, and providing new ones, before they had even installed them) and I explicitly asked if any of those changes were going to hold up the process. They said no. They initially built the wall and it was crooked. We asked them to fix it and they tried, but it was still very warped. The mud was applied unevenly and not sanded well. They applied paint anyway. We had to ask them to redo this. They did and the wall is now straight, but the mud and paint overtop are still uneven. They installed trim poorly and unevenly, leaving rough edges and gaps. They did not patch the holes that the nail gun left or paint the trim. We are now stuck doing this. They moved the electrical switch to the incorrect place on the wall, despite me marking exactly where we wanted it and confirming placement with them in-person beforehand. Now it's too late to fix that. They didn't lay proper protection down on our floors and they were coated in white from dust and splattered paint. They said not to worry and they would scrub them. They didn't. We are left trying to remove debris from the hardwood floor cracks that is proving difficult to get fully clean. Most importantly, they re-wired the electrical incorrectly. Our switches don't work properly, or at all sometimes. We've gotten several quotes from other electrical contractors and they've all agreed -- This was a botched job. We are now looking at spending $4,000 to fix their mistakes. After all of this, we just wanted Wendy and her team out of our home so we wrote them a check to be done with it. Wendy never followed up on the quality issue updates. With us, after initial consult, their team's communication was poor and the quality of work/craftsmanship was very much lacking.
