Some of the students are very afraid of water and some not so much. The class size is small allowing for lots of time with the instructor and lots of practice time. The teachers are super experienced and very patient as well as super nice. The Berkeley pool is WARM! You won't freeze in there - perfect for beginning swimming. The Berkeley classes come with practice sessions for the 8 weeks following class, so you can practice in a nice, warm pool with other students. I have taken 3 of their courses, and I very much recommend them! I took the Beginning and Next Step classes in Berkeley with Richard (a great teacher!) and Ocean 101 in Sarasota, FL with Melon (founder of this school). Sarasota has the #1 beach in the US - look it up! Miracle Swimming has classes all over the country. IT'S TOTALLY GREAT! I had the best time and it was well worth the money to me. This gym set me up right from the start with a trainer to show me the equipment and run a diagnostic on me to show me my fat / water ratio and set a baseline for me. I decided that I liked Becky and set up several training sessions as I was just starting and felt I would need some assistance at the beginning. I did do 8 sessions and it's gone great. I will be on my own after two more, but I now have more confidence in what I can achieve and a better understanding of what I need to do. Equipment is great and they offer a good variety of machine style equipment and free weights. If you're just starting, I recommend going for a trainer if you can do it. It makes a big difference. Yes, the crowd is older, and there are some in rehabilitation, but I've yet to have a problem getting on equipment and everyone is polite and nice. I'm not surrounded by a ton of physically fit athletes, but I'm not intimidated and it's encouraged me. I had done a water aerobics class which was fun and you really get a workout. I plan on trying some others, but I know I can only do evening ones. Unfortunately, my work ours are such that the day classes are not for me. IF you really want to do classes, I'd review that part as it may not be for you. If you want to do some aerobic equipment and weight lifting equipment and get in and out of a gym and feel like the equipment is well made, I would say this is a great gym for you. The women's locker rooms are nice and clean. Showers are well built with privacy area. Hot tub is really nice and lap pool is gorgeous and big. I'm buying swim fins to try and do laps next. Lots of amenities which I like that a lot of other places don't have like the size of this pool.

Recently, the number of unsupervised kids that are riding their bikes, scooters, and electric do dads are inconsiderate with their use of the sidewalks, their total lack of attention to their surroundings and other people. These kids need more adult supervision and parents need to take more time teaching them manners. I also am taking exception to the growing number of pet owners that think THEIR dogs don't need to be properly trained, leashed, or picked up after. The 5 O'Clock group of owners that let their dogs off theie leads and let them just take over a section of the park is non-sense. Read the signs. That is not acceptable. On several occasions, while just walking I have been run up on by dogs showing their teeth. I stop, sayd nice doggy and then move on. But some day, if I do get bit by one of these unruly monsters, their entiled owners will owe me money they haven't even made yet. I would like to see more of a park police presence for a while to get the kids and dog owners back to being decent people. And to the people that are feeding the ducks and squirrels, STOP. Read the signs. You aren't doing the wildlife any favors by feeding them and you aren't doing the other people that use the park any favors either. Payne Park is beautiful; a great place to enjoy the out of doors and the wonderful weather in Sarasota. Kids and Pet owners don't have the right to ruin the experience for everyone else.
