It's not every day that you find authentic ethnic food downtown Columbia. If you, like I, crave something out of the ordinary Arepe South has you covered! Casual grab and go environment, offering traditional Venezuelan fare. Dishes are made to order so would suggest ordering ahead if you're on a tight lunch schedule. Well there is no table service, there are there are lunch tables for dining in. For my first trip, my guest self ordered the Pernil Arepa, Special Queen. The Arepa was relatively dry yet provided the perfect base to hold the moist meats that were generously stuffed inside. The pernil was incredibly tasty and melted in your mouth with every bite. I opted to add in sweet plantains and avocados to the Pernil Arepe and strongly encourage that you do the same! The special queen was a shredded avocado, chicken with cilantro and citrus flavors. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of cilantro and I'm very sensitive to it yet I could not notice it in the special queen. While the Arepe are served à la carte, the quantity is more than sufficient for a lunch meal or two. Staff was incredibly helpful during our first visit and we look forward to returning soon. read more

He enthusiastically explained that while they had Mexican dishes, authentic Latin food was their real specialty. He made great recommendations and took great care of us throughout the meal. We chose to try the empanadas (1 cheese, 1 chicken, and 1 steak) and some cheese dip with chorizo. Both were exceptional. Full of flavor. My wife and I agreed to split 2 entrees, and that was another good decision. I had the Cachapa with shredded chicken, and she had the Venezuelan Arepas. Neither of us had ever had these dishes, but both were amazing. We were stuffed, but no way we couldn't take a desert home for later. The flan and the Tres Leches were both AWESOME! If you are on the fence, just try this place. You will be glad you did! They take a tremendous of pride in the quality of the food. The restaurant was very clean and had a great ambiance.

I ate the empanadas with hubby, hubby ate is skewers,rice, and potato, my food was still nowhere to be seen. At that point I asked for a refund, they told me my food wasn't ready, and I said I know, I'm done here and would like a refund which they gave to me in cash. It was an hour from ordering to me asking for a refund. What we had was good but 1) I wouldn't recommend for someone with allergies or food restrictions, 2) it took awhile to get the food The woman at the front was very sweet but I was disappointed because several people on TikTok recommended it, and the reviews are exceptional.

I could tell from the moment we arrived that the hostesses were professional and got us to a table that was comfortable and had a view of the dining room. We had originally intended to sit outside where the view is more interesting, but on this day the heat was just too much. Our server, Megan approached quickly and went over a presentation of meat types and preparation styles, and quickly got us some drinks. She was efficient and professional throughout the meal. I had a wonderful fillet with some sauteed spinach, and it was all quite tasty. With a price averaging about $90 per person all in, including soft drinks, tip and tax, it's a higher end restaurant for the area, but certainly a reasonable value overall. For those visiting from out of town as we were, you should definitely take the time to either walk across Gervais Street to visit the State House, or head in the opposite direction along main Street and visit the downtown area. Halls is a wonderful centerpiece and represents Columbia well. At the end of the meal, they asked for my address, at which point I sarcastically said to my wife quote what are they going to do, mail me a thank you card?" Our niece's daughter had the farmers omelette with the apple sage sausage. The apple-sage sausages were excellent (I got to sample one) and a very good deal. The ambience of Halls is always great. The service is usually quite good and the food is usually excellent. This is our second brunch at Halls and I'll have to say that our first brunch experience was a little bit better for the reasons noted above. I still rate it the best brunch in town.

Our mains were really good -- the japchae, which I ordered with fried tofu, had the right texture and flavor, and was delicious yet spicy. The tofu was a little bland though. My partner enjoyed the squid and pork belly dish and said that the sauce was similar to the japchae sauce. The portions were pretty normal and not too big, so we had a few leftovers but not too many. The prices were also pretty reasonable as well. Overall we were really happy with our food here and would come back if we ever visited again.
