They sell some interesting items, ranging from Persian rugs to 'antique' furniture. If you are looking for an antique item, this would be a lot better than a number of the other similar shops, purely because there is less junk in here and more items that have intentionally been sourced. Inside is quite dark and a bit uninviting, something that made it quite hard to spend time searching through the collectibles. None the less, a good shop that offers a few products you might struggle to get elsewhere.

A specialist antique store run by brothers, it regularly stops tourists in their tracks with it's powerful window displays featuring Japanese Samurai swords and World War II guns positioned in front of vintage Union Jack flags. The military theme continues inside with a vast array of disarmed and polished weapons, helmets, shields, books and memorabilia. It's not the kind of shop I'd choose to return to but if you've always had a burgeoning desire to hold a flintlock pistol, a Martini Henry rifle, an Islamic sword, a Brown Bess Musket or an American Civil War revolver....

The shop buys and sells valuable antique furniture, jewellery, clocks, mirrors, decorative figurines and dishware. I was amazed at the quality (and prices) of some of the items, and was especially drawn to a large music box up on a shelf. There are a number of vendors in here selling everything from furniture, silverware, jewellery, lighting, paintings & prints, mirrors, fireplaces and clocks. Not surprisingly, the prices are slightly higher than you'd expect elsewhere due to its central location and draw of the tourists, but that doesn't stop it being a fun place to browse and on the whole the dealers are very helpful and knowledgeable.

She watched me browse around, smiling the whole time. Aw, I should have bought something. Items available included the standard antique shop necessities: books, jewellery, dishware and ashtrays in blown glass (some of the dishware came in full sets), trinkets and figurines. Highlights included a display of dolls that were all in very good condition and somewhat creepy, and the lovely collection of brooches in one of the jewellery cases. They were all delightfully painted, though a bit expensive. One side of the shop (there are two entrances, as it turns out) is quite crowded and congested, whilst the other is more spacious and has several larger statues on display. A cute shop to check out if you enjoy antiquing.

I once shleped home a foot tall hand painted wooden skeleton from Guatemala just because I had to have it in my collection of paper mache sugar skulls. Yes, there is a review coming! Walking through Seven Dials I noticed a mirrored mosaic skull hanging in the window of this second hand furniture and house clearance shop. When I went in to inquire about the price, the very lovely owner said to my surprise "£15". I immediately said "sold" and he offered to deliver it to my flat. AMAZING! The point being that even though R.W Berry & Sons deal in house foreclosures and real crafted wooden furniture, you can stroll by and find the most amazing bits and bobs. For those not familiar with the term, it involves modernising and updating old furniture rather than buying new and using more of the planet's resources. A small secondhand furniture store in Seven Dials, R W Berry is perfect for established and wannabe upcyclers. Unlike a lot of the antique shops in the North Laines, the stock is reasonably priced and there's an interesting mix of desks, dining tables, chairs, dressers, wardrobes, mirrors and clocks. Since most of the stock comes from house and office clearances, there's also the odd filing cabinet, standard lamp and animal head amidst the ornaments and furniture. The goods on sale are lovely and worth a look, but the service is generally shoddy. If you see something you like, go for it, otherwise give this place a miss: asking for help got me nowt but a snooty response. Bellerophon (great name!) joins Swag and other shops like on Trafalgar Street in serving high quality, high price furniture. Like so many of the others, the stock on offer is not quite antique, but certainly old and imbued with history, or made to look thus. The material is a pleasing to look at, and wouldn't go amiss in any of the typically Edwardian Brighton seafront homes, although it would look horrendously out of place in one the more modern gaffs. However, beyond the excellent stock, little about Bellerophon entices me to suggest a visit. The service was very poor: my polite question about cheaper items was met with a very snooty we-don't-serve-your-kind look and response. To be fair, I couldn't have afforded anything in there at this point in time, but I was still a little offended. And there really was nothing in young professional/student price range: my guess is they're looking for the rich Hove clients. In which case, why set up in the North Laine? If you're a fan of antique-y furniture and are looking to redecorate, Bellerophon is a great place to have a peek: just make sure you dress for the money, or else you might get rudely treated. Still, the items are robust and pretty... give them a shot if this is your sort of thing.
