We've been with Race since they first offered service in our development (Alpine Forest Park,…read moreTehachapi). I had been watching them for two years at that time (since seeing the first billboard they put up outside the entrance to Stallion Springs). I did all my underground work to connect to the infrastructure that Race had purchased from the defunct Country Cable operation before they even released installs in AFP and according to their published engineering standards at that time. They eased their standards (3/4" vs. 2" PVC required) after I was done and before releasing installs in AFP, so that cost me a little more than it might have. We have completely underground service, not pole service. Our connectivity has been pretty much bullet-proof (only one outage of a few hours [plus a few generally short maintenance outages] over a six+ year span). Our speed tests have only rarely shown less than 900 Mbps download, upload speeds are sometimes lower, in the 800 Mbps range. Great value for the service provided. The POTS phone service has also been very good (and much cheaper than the AT&T service it replaced), but we have had a few more issues with it than with the data connection. We initially had their TV service, but the TV offering was immature at the time we started with them and we went back to Dish Network, even though it costs more. We have never used the WiFi on their Optical Network Terminals (ONTs). I have a separate firewall inside their ONT and we use a WiFi access point inside the firewall. We haven't used their tech support often, but when we have it has always been responsive and polite. However, it has been generally less technically knowledgeable and less helpful in adapting to my more sophisticated network setup requirements than I would like. As a result of recent intermittent phone issues over two days, they came out within 48 hours to replace our original ONT. The technician was prompt, polite, professional, and more knowledgeable than other Race employees with whom I have dealt. However, the new ONT is a freestanding tower model that doesn't integrate well into my wall-mounted network equipment installation, so it is currently sitting on the cardboard box that it came in so that it can be connected to the wall-mounted network components. Race declined to provide the wall-mount bracket that the manufacturer makes available for this ONT, as it must be purchased separately. The manufacturer (Calix) refuses to sell to end users, so I will have to design and fabricate a unique wall-mount bracket for the ONT (in addition to rerouting the fiber, rerouting a power cable, and rerouting and reterminating four Cat-6 network cables). The most serious issue I have with Race is that shortly after activating service with them, I reported concerns about the security of their customer payments online system. When I checked just now (more than six years after my initial report), they had taken no action to better secure their portal.

Name change in order: Race To The Bottom…read more The WORST company, 2nd only to SCE. 6 weeks back and forth between dumb, dumber and dumbest and no one can perform a proper install. Bulky equipment, sloppy lines on my NEW home, a new giant hole was made through my wall when an existing was present. And as a special parting gift, they left their garbage on my driveway, including a huge reel of black lines, snack packaging and empty bottles of soda. Pathetic, unprofessional, a Communication embarrassment and 360° disaster.

Bill was paid late (my bad was in hospital) on a Friday around 11 am. went in and paid late bill (no late notice just knew it was pat due. then and caught up other bills late around town caused by extended hospital stay. returned home at 3pm to find water shut off. called the office and was told it was shut off for non payment. I told them I paid the bill before noon this same day. I was told the tech would be out to turn it on but I had to pay a reconnect fee. I told them the bill was paid before they disconnected it but they did not care. so I drove to the office and paid the fee. they said it would be turned on by the end of the day. well at 4:55 pm I called them as it was not on yet (still padlocked) was told then that the tech would not make it there until Monday. sigh what am I to do. I told them that there padlock will be waiting for the tech on Monday he can pick it up then. I removed the lock with a sawzall and turned the water on. then i placed it in the water box. Monday no tech all day. Tuesday I called and told them there lock is still there (did not say it was removed) it took until Wednesday before a tech arrived. he retrieved the lock and asked me what happened. I just shrugged my shoulders and walked away. if it were not for the nice office personnel this would be a one star review
