My family's experience with VITAS Inpatient Hospice in Carrollton:…read more * DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. * I strongly encourage families to thoroughly research all hospice options before choosing VITAS Inpatient Hospice in Carrollton. * In my opinion, no hospital or case manager should refer patients here without carefully evaluating the quality of care being provided. * The unit appeared to be chronically understaffed for the number of terminally ill patients requiring intensive end-of-life care. * Several staff members lacked the compassion, empathy, and urgency that patients and families deserve during a loved one's final days. * There were no accommodations for family members who wanted to remain overnight. The room only had a standard upright chair--no recliner or sleeper chair. Families were left to purchase their own air mattress if they wanted to stay at the bedside, despite the limited space. * I remained at my mother's bedside throughout her entire stay. I genuinely believe my constant presence was the reason she died with dignity and with as little pain as possible. Families should not have to provide around-the-clock advocacy to ensure their loved one receives appropriate care. * Hospice is supposed to provide comfort, dignity, compassion, and peace. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. * After my mother's death, I contacted VITAS Patient and Family Support Services to report my concerns. I was assured that a Bereavement Manager would contact me. As of four days later, no one from VITAS had reached out to offer bereavement support or to follow up regarding the concerns I raised about my mother's care. * Even after death, our family has felt abandoned and unheard. *, staffing shortages, or whether basic comfort measures are being provided. * Every person deserves compassionate, respectful, and dignified end-of-life care. Sadly, that was not our experience. Again, based on my family's experience, I do not recommend VITAS Inpatient Hospice in Carrollton.

I'll say that the management group leaves much to be desired. In our year here there have been 3 directors, none of which have been able to answer the most basic of care questions. There's zero communication from management. While I prefer to communicate with nurses as they're the ones who interact with residents everyday (good luck catching managers out of their offices/meetings), there have been situations that required the help of managers. For instance, my mother does not see facility doctors due to insurance, however, a facility doctor prescribed her a medication for a condition she doesn't have. Mind boggling! I am still waiting for an answer as to how that happened. It's been 7 months now. With that being said, I do realize the difficulties facing facilities like this. I know there are horror stories out there at other facilities and I'm thankful to have the good staff members close by.

We had to call over and over to get answers. And the weekend nursing experience was terrible. While I was visiting him on a Saturday, he rang for the nurse to help him go to the restroom. He rang again after 20 minutes. When no one came after another 10 minutes, I went to the nurse's station. I was told to tell him to go in his diaper. I was shocked and said the only reason he is here is to get strong enough to walk to the restroom himself. The response was, well it's safer for him to go in his diaper and then we'll change him. I was appalled. On another occasion, I found him laying in bed with no sheet. He was laying on a plastic mattress. But I think the absolute worst thing is when he was taken to the hospital from Hollymead and the ER nurses immediately masked up when they heard where he was coming from. Then when he was placed in his hospital room, all visitors had to gown and glove up to enter. I was told that Hollymead is known for communicable diseases and I did not want what my father came in with. He had C. Diff. - a severe inflammation of the colon with watery diarrhea - highly contagious. When my father was taken to the hospital, he had been on a pureed diet for over a month. Where did he catch C. Diff.? My father is now dying from double pneumonia and kidney failure. I feel the lack of care at Hollymead contributed to my father's death. I wish I could go back in time and place him in another facility.

Director Leanetta Pryor completed and finalization the agreement and care for my mom to everyones satisfaction. She is as lovely as she is professional. The entire staff seem willing to accommodate their clients with a smile and swiftness we all appreciate. It gives me peace knowing they are very caring and looking after her and allowing her as much liberty as she needs and wants! Their dedication to my 88-year-old mother's recovery has been remarkable. They approach her care with a perfect blend of professional expertise and genuine compassion, consistently going above and beyond to help her regain her strength and independence.
