I haven't had Italian in a long, long time so we were looking for a reasonably priced spot to try in Auckland. It's actually hard to find! We settled on Archie's Restaurant & Pizzeria in Newmarket. We dropped in on a Tuesday afternoon (11:00am) to grab a bite before heading off to the beaches. It seems to be pretty popular with the work crowd. The place is quite large but most people, including our party, sat outside on their patio. The lunch menu is split into gourmet wood fire pizza, pasta, salad and specials. Everything on the first page of the lunch menu was $16.00 NZD. Super reasonable. The dinner menu is much more pricier. - Lamb shank ($16.00 NZD) - this was their lunch special for the day. No one mentioned it but luckily, we saw one of the workers bring the sign out. It came with a side of salad and mashed potatoes. Lamb shank at this price is unheard of so we can't complain too much. Sides weren't memorable but the lamb shank was reasonably good. - Prosciutto cotto e funghi ($16.00 NZD) - prosciutto ham, field mushrooms, tomato, mozzarella and oregano. They let us put the mozzarella on just half the pizza (I also think you can ask for half and half pizzas to try more options)! The crust is very thin. The pizza was a bit one dimensional; it needed something like arugula to give it more flavour and balance. Just average. - Fettuccini tuto mare ($16.00 NZD) - fresh NZ seafood, sautéed in white vino, garlic, homemade tomato sauce, fresh herbs and chili. The seafood was a generous mix of fish, clams, shrimp, prawn, mussels and scallop. Sadly, the sauce and seasoning was boring/lacking. The price is right for lunch but the food is uninspired Italian. Sorry Archie's.

I come here most Sundays after church and every time we have the most amazing experience at Archie's. The restaurant is always lively and always, without a doubt, provides the most amazing Italian food. The staff are so great too, we've even come to know a few of them by name. And Archie, the owner and namesake of the restaurant, is always really present, hands-on and comes to see how we're going. He's a true Italian man and really emphasizes the Italian vibe. My favourite meal is the rare beef salad. I love salad but I also love meat and this is the perfect mix for me. You come away feeling healthy and satisfied. Another win on the menu is the Pollo e Pesto that is a beautiful pizza with chicken, zucchini, pesto and pine nuts. Delicious. And it's even better because they have gluten free bases!

One of the best overall quality restaurants in Auckland that I know of! The customer service is absolutely amazing, the food selection is great and it's a lovely place to take friends/share meals. I recommend making a booking if you have more than three people as it can get quite busy at night. They always make the effort to try and find you a table though, even when they are busy. They have a lunch menu which has small dishes and is half the dinner price so if you want to try it out then I recommend going for lunch as a bit of a taste tester. I love the chicken salad, fish of the day, and ALL of their pizzas. They also do their pizzas as gluten-free. I quite often see that they give children some dough to play with (which they eventually cook for them) which is a cool way of helping to keep the children entertained - not only for the parents but for the rest of the restaurant as well :-)

If you're after traditional Italian with a modern flare, come on down to Archies in Newmarket. Hidden behind the Event cinemas, right next to the big parking building, you will find Archies right on the corner of Davis Crescent. Here you will be greeted by the lovely, clean shaven, slicked back hair Archie, who's top priority is to make your experience the most enjoyable ever! From here you can be seated inside, on the patio, or right outside under massive umbrellas. The food here is always amazing! They have a large selection of pizzas, pastas, salads and some delicious desserts! I quite like coming to Archies at lunch time as they have a $14 lunch menu. However, if I'm here for dinner I always start with one of the delicious bruschetta's. Archies is always great for a big group dinner as they have BYOW. You cant go past BYO!

We have been here a few times and are always impressed by prompt service and willingness to help. They are great with kids and provide a rolling pin and dough and even offer to bake the result! The food, however is a bit predictable. No real wow factor, a little bland, but exactly what you expect of your order.

Frequently dragged to the restaurant by a friend, I have had indifferent experiences at this place. The best food I had was a seafood salad which was fresh and tasty, perfect for a light meal I was wanting. It is enjoyable to be seated outside and enjoy a glass of wine (it is BYO). It creates quite an atmosphere outside on the street in the back of Newmarket (behind the movie theatre), helping to emphasise the authentic Italian feel. I have had average experiences with the pasta dishes, although the pizzas are quite tasty, but quite light (in size) compared to other pizzerias.

Having been going to this restaurant for over a decade I like to think of myself as a bit of a regular. As a kid I was stoked about the location - being opposite a park meant I could speed off there as soon as the adults started to bore me. Now, I think I appreciate it a whole load more, not only is the food incredible but the staff are also fantastic. The owner, Archie, is there every lunch and dinner service and pops around all the tables to come say hi and makes sure that everything is delicious - and it has yet to disappoint. Self proclaimed 'best pizzas in the world' and to be honest they can't be far off. Always packed with flavour, they have great combinations with super fresh ingredients - I'm reasonably fussy but I've yet to find one that I like! I've only tried one pasta, the penne carbonara and it was seriously good, and incredible decadent. If you're looking for something a little bit more guilt free, the seafood salad has been a hit amongst me and my friends this summer for either lunch or dinner. It's packed with loads of fresh seafood including scallops, prawns, mussels and white fish served with some creamy aioli it's a major crowd pleaser. Archie's also has some great vibes no matter what time of day it is, their outside area is my favourite so it's perfect for lunch time or those summer evenings. However, there is something about being in a cosy Italian restaurant, right near the pizza oven on a winters night that doesn't sounds too bad to me! It's pretty price friendly so I would happily go with a group of friends (but prefer to go if it's my parents shout) I can see myself coming here for years to come!

I struggled to get to the bottom of my delicious pasta dish!

We really love the owner and chef, who is always happy to tell us honestly what he thinks is the best choice out of two options, or on the odd occasion, create a new dish by combining two things we can't choose between (we've been there enough to now be classed as 'regulars', it seems). The decor is hilarious - great mis-matching paintings/photos/who knows and even an in-built disco light that will sometimes be turned on if you're there for a birthday. It's just ridiculous. And so wonderful. We definitely rate the pasta over the pizzas, particularly the chicken fettucine, but the pizza is good too. They have GF bases available also. All in all, is a great wee place for when you want to go out but feel like somewhere cosy and relaxed, rather than fancy.

Its owner is like a pot-bellied, soft-spoken version of Kramer from Seinfeld. Ive gone so often over the years that he's become a kind of friend. In the old days orders were often forgotten. He would come rushing out, hunched over, hands clasped together, begging forgiveness and offering to make the 'special' pasta. Ten minutes later he would bring out a meal big enough to make lunch with for the next three days. It's been a while since they've made a mistake. I miss them. His restaurant isn't the fanciest place in town. It doesn't have Michelin star service. But it's the place I go to if I'm feeling down. Sitting in that strange orange room filled with faded paintings of Marilyn Monroe, old car ads and what looks like a group torturing someone in a medieval village square somehow makes me feel better. The best time to go is while experiencing that worst of tragedies: A birthday. The staff turn on the disco lights that hang from the ceiling and the place becomes the best party in town. We went recently on New Year's Eve. The owner sat down with us and talked about his struggle to make ends meet. He wanted to do better for his staff and his business this year. I kept thinking losing Eduardos would be a minor tragedy. It's one of our last bastions of glorious amateurism; a shambles that somehow assembles itself into something beautiful every single night. Also the food is really good.

We were about to turn away when my cousin thought to ask about takeout. I'm kind of surprised the server didn't ask us if we wanted to do that and was ready to let us walk out. We ordered 3 pasta dishes, a side of meatballs, and 3 pieces of tigella bread. That came out to about $70 USD. I might be a little off because I'm not sure about the conversion. Price wise, I'm not entirely convinced it was worth it. $70 for 3 people is expensive, but at the same time, FRESH, HANDMADE pasta! The food was good. No doubt about that. I'm glad we got a mix of flavors to share though, because it was one of those meals where you can only eat so much before your mouth starts to reject it. I LOVE cheese, but the tortellini with cream and parmigiano reggiano started feeling very heavy. It went perfectly in between bites of the tagliatelle with Bolognese though. The spaghetti alla chittara with gorgonzola and walnuts was my least favorite, but it was my cousin's favorite. Just a matter of preference. I was still willing to eat it though. The meatballs were so good. Perfectly seasoned and paired with the sauce. I was disappointed to see an order only had 4 pieces, but I don't know how much it cost. The bread was also delicious. The texture reminded me of a waffle, not quite crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. One order is only one disk-shaped pieced about the size of your hand. If I could, would I come again? I'm very tempted by the other items in their menu. As a person on vacation with little thought to budget, I absolutely would come again. If I was a local and had to watch my wallet, this place would be a treat, not something I could have often.

The portions are small but enough to fit dessert after and an appetizer first. The selection of Italian wines is fantastic, I was so excited to try as many as I could. I'm pretty sure I spent more money on wine than on food that night. My boyfriend ordered dessert after dinner and was happy about that. They have a tiramisu which I would die for if it was vegan.
